From being a demure dame in ‘Parineeta’ to a sly temptress in ‘Ishqiya’ and now a southern siren in ‘The Dirty Picture’, actress Vidya Balan has come a long way.

Student killed as truck rams into school

Nashik, November 30: An 11-year-old boy was killed and 39 other students were injured when a speeding truck rammed into a primary school building in Maharashtra’s Nashik district Wednesday, police said. The driver is absconding.

Angry residents burnt vehicles and blocked traffic after the incident.

Gaware, a Class 6 student, was killed in the incident at Dhamangaon on Sinnar-Ghoti Road, some 30 km from the district headquarters at Nashik.

‘Over 18 children are said to be critical in a hospital here,’ a police official said.

Petrol prices slashed by Rs 0.65 per litre across India

New Delhi, November 30: State-run oil firms will cut retail prices of petrol by 0.65 rupee a litre, excluding taxes, from Thursday, a company statement said on Wednesday, the second straight cut this month in a move that could help to ease near double-digit inflation.

The companies cut petrol prices by about 3.2 percent earlier this month, the first reduction in retail prices in nearly three years and the first since prices were decontrolled in June 2010.

State fuel retailers — IOC , Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Bharat Petroleum Corp tend to move their prices in tandem.

FDI in retail will enslave India: Hazare

Ralegan Siddhi, November 30: Opposing FDI in the retail sector, activist Anna Hazare on Wednesday said the move would lead to enslavement of the countrymen and will not benefit the farmers as claimed by the government.

“If people are saying it (FDI) should not happen, why are you insisting? The British came to India to trade and for 150 years, ruled us, enslaved us. Do you want to have a repeat?” he told a press conference on Wednesday evening.

“They (the foreign investors) will spoil the water and the environment. The government should consider this,” he said.

Nearly 79 percent polling in Haryana bypolls

Chandigarh, November 30: Nearly 79 percent voter turnout was witnessed in the by-elections to the Haryana assembly from the Adampur and Ratia constituencies Wednesday, officials said.

While Adampur in Hisar district recorded nearly 76 percent polling, the voting percentage in Ratia in Fatehabad district was nearly 82.

Voting for the two assembly seats in Haryana began Wednesday morning amid tight security.

Govt not committed to a strong Lokpal: Anna

Ralegan Siddhi, November 30: Gandhian Anna Hazare on Wednesday hit out at the government saying that it was not committed to a strong Lokpal Bill.

Addressing mediapersons here, Hazare said, “There is a deliberate attempt to weaken the Lokpal bill.”

The Gandhian outrightly rejected the draft report of the Lokpal Bill in its present form.

Hazare, yesterday, made it very clear that he will agitate again if a strong bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Six terror suspects arrested

New Delhi, November 30: Six suspected terrorists, including a Pakistani national, have been arrested over the past few days and police are probing their possible involvement in several attacks, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Wednesday.

‘Six suspected terrorists have been apprehended… One of them is a Pakistani… Investigation is still under way,’ Chidambaram told reporters here.

‘We think these persons are involved in (some terror attacks in the country),’ the home minister said.

Retail FDI row: SP calls for UP bandh

New Delhi, November 30: Samajawadi Party on Wednesday called for a shutdown across the state of Uttar Pradesh to protest Centre’s decision to allow foreign equity in the retail sector.

According to reports, tomorrow’s shutdown is likely to have a big impact on normal life since the Centre’s move is being opposed by all major political parties excluding Congress.

Indo-US CEO Forum asked for FDI in retail: Govt

New Delhi, November 30: Amidst a raging controversy over FDI in multi-brand retail, government on Wednesday said it received a recommendation from the Indo-US CEO Forum to open up the sector, among other areas, for foreign investment.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia quoted the Indo-US CEO Forum as having recommended enhancing of “Indian foreign direct investment (FDI) policy reforms through further opening up of key sectors such as insurance, private sector banks, retail and defence to foreign investors”.

HC reserves order on PIL into AI aircraft deal

New Delhi, November 30: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday reserved its judgement on a PIL seeking a direction to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to inquire into alleged purchase order of 111 aircraft costing a whopping Rs 67,000 crore to national carrier Air India.

“Judgement is reserved,” a bench of Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said after hearing arguments on the PIL filed in 2010 seeking investigation into the aircraft purchase deal.

Turkey announces sanctions on Syria

Syria, November 30: Ahmet Davutoglu announced the nine-article sanctions during a press conference in the Turkish capital on Wednesday.

According to Davutoglu, Ankara will cut off its financial transactions with the Syrian government and central bank and freeze Syrian government assets in Turkey.

The minister added that some of the top Syrian officials will not be allowed to travel to Turkey and their assets will be frozen.

Over 13,700 jobs for AP Youth in CPOs

Hyderabad, Nov 30 (INN): The Central Police Organisations (CPOs) have earmarked as many as 13,709 constable posts for the youth from Andhra Pradesh.

Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, Staff Selection Commission chairman NK Raghupathy said that the commission was undertaking combined recruitment of about 48,802 constables the in Central Police Organisations(CPOs) during 2012.

About 79,000 jobs, including last years’ unfilled vacancies, would be offered in the six Central Armed Police Forces in the country during this year, he said.

Bomb blast in Imphal kills one and injures 3

Imphal, November 30: One person was killed and at least three injured following a bomb blast in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, on Wednesday.

The powerful bomb exploded at around 11 a.m. ahead of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh”s visit to the state.

Singh is scheduled to take part in the inauguration of a newly constructed State Assembly complex and convention centre on Saturday.

Hyderabad, November 30: A girl fearing parent’s refusal to marry her choice jumped to death into Husain Sagar. Ram Gopalpet police fished out the body.

It is said that 21 year old Preeti Vyas, daughter of Madhusudhan Vyas resident of Bidarwadi had been in love with a boy and wanted to marry him. She feared that her parents will reject the boy with whom she was in love. Fearing this she left her house on November 26 and allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Husain Sagar.

London, November 30: A jobless Briton who fathered 15 children from 13 different women has turned out to be an embarrassment for his mother as she finds him leading his life quite irresponsibly

Jamie Cumming, branded as “Britain’s most feckless dad” for fathering 14 children has had another child and two more are on the way, the Daily Mail reported Sunday.

The 34-year-old Cumming, from Scotland’s Dundee city, who lives off benefits is even unable to pay maintenance for any of them.

Adulterer regrets it… but blames it on the devil

Riyadh, November 30: A married Saudi man who was caught by the kingdom’s religious police sleeping with a woman said he was sorry and blamed it on the devil.

“I regret it…I was seduced by the devil to commit sin,” the unnamed man told members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Following a tip-off, Commission members had stormed an apartment in the capital Riyadh and arrested the 50-year-old man and his girl friend.

“They were caught in an absence act…both admitted they have been dating for a while,” Sabq Arabic language daily said.

Hyderabad, November 30: A man has mysteriously gone missing from Quadri Chaman, Falaknuma. Falaknuma police have registered a missing case on the basis of a complaint and investigations are on. It is said that Abdul Qadeer who owns a hotel business aged nearly 55 years has gone missing form November 25. His son Abdul Muqeet told that his father was worried for some days and the last time he had informed his own mother about his presence in a hotel at Chaderghat.

BPO workers sexual harassed, two colleagues sacked

Delhi, November 30: Intra-office relationships are complex. But, these people took it too far. Two assistant managers at a call centre in Gurgaon were sacked by the management after four female trainees alleged that the accused were sexually harassing them. The victims have filed a complaint with Udyog Vihar police station. No FIR has been lodged yet. An official said the case is being investigated.
