Hasan Ali case: Property, cars worth Rs 50 crore attached

New Delhi, June 30: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today issued a showcause notice for attachment of properties valued at Rs 50 crore of Pune stud farm owner and alleged tax defaulter Hasan Ali Khan and his Kolkata-based associate Kashinath Tapuriah in a money laundering case.

The ED issued the order under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after it got the approval of the adjudicating authority of the law, which is based in the national capital, and it includes immovable properties in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune of the duo, official sources said.

18 babies die at govt hospital in Bengal

Kolkata, June 30: Seventeen babies died at BC Roy Pediatric Hospital in Kolkata in the last 36 hours, triggering protests by locals and relatives who alleged negligence by doctors even as the West Bengal government ordered an inquiry.

“I admitted my child at 11 pm and at 2:30 am they asked me to buy an injection. I ran around for the medicine since all shops were closed. And when I got the medicine, they administered it only at 8 in the morning but it was too late,” Hannan Gazi, Father of Deceased Infant Paradub said.

Inclusion of Hindi in national curriculum: Oz govt

Melbourne, June 30: In the backdrop of growing importance of Indian diaspora in Australia, the Victorian state government has asked the federal authorities to include Hindi a part of its national curriculum.

The state government, in its latest submission to the national curriculum authority, has asked as to why Hindi language has not been included among 11 languages in the national curriculum pushing for a strong case for the national language of India.

Woman drags dead ex-hubby to court, challenges divorce

Mumbai, June 30: A Bandra woman is fighting a divorce and property case against her husband, who died a year ago.

Ruling that the matter cannot be dismissed simply because one party to the case is no longer alive, the division bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and R Y Ganoo said, “The fact that the husband has died, does not disentitle the wife to pray for setting aside the decree of divorce wrongly passed by the Family Court.

The matter will be considered on merits.” The bench granted the 42-year-old woman a stay on the divorce decree.

Vinay Mittal takes over as Chairman, Railway Board

New Delhi, June 30: Vinay Mittal on Thursday took over as the new Chairman, Railway Board and ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Railways.

He replaces Vivek Sahai who superannuated today from this post. Prior to this, Mittal was serving as General Manager, South Eastern Railway since January 12, 2011.

Mittal is an officer of Indian Railway Traffic Service (1975 batch). He has worked in various capacities all over the Indian Railways and has acquired vast and varied experience in the field of Railway Administration in his distinguished career.

Bomb scare at Delhi market

New Delhi, June 30: A bomb disposal drill was carried out in Sarojini Nagar market in south Delhi Thursday after a man alerted police about a suspicious article lying in a box attached to an electric pole. It turned out to be a broken remote, police said.

“The remote was kept near the Delhi Public Library close to the market. A passerby made a call at police control room,” said a police officer.

Police said that as soon as the information on the bomb came in the morning, the area was cordoned off.

Rs 10 lakh reward to Mumbai police team for cracking Dey case

Mumbai, June 30: Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil today presented a reward of Rs 10 lakh to the 55-member team of Mumbai police who cracked the journalist Jyotirmoy Dey murder case, arresting seven persons.

“For 15 days after Dey”s murder, a lot of criticism was heaped on police force. There was pressure on police who made all efforts to crack the case,” Patil said.

“The government put faith in the Mumbai Crime Branch and it did not let us down. We congratulate the police and senior officers involved in the investigation,” the minister said.

Fed-up with hubby’s affairs, woman jumps to death

Mumbai, June 30: A woman committed suicide here following a fight with her husband over his alleged extra-marital affairs, police said Tuesday.

Mamta Jha, 37, jumped from the 19th floor of her 23-storey building in Lokhandwala township in north Mumbai Monday night.

“A suicide note has been found in which she has mentioned that she was fed up with her husband’s extra-marital affairs,” a police officer said.

Obama would lose to generic Republican candidate in 2012 polls

Washington, June 30: A generic Republican candidate would beat US President Barack Obama in a hypothetical 2012 election match-up, according to a new poll.

A new Rasmussen poll covering 3,500 likely voters, showed that a no-name Republican holds a four-point lead, with 46 percent, while Obama lags behind at 42 percent, the Daily News reports.

The gap is the largest lead the Republicans have had over Obama since he became the underdog five weeks ago.

According to the poll, three percent respondents said they preferred some other candidate, and nine percent said they were undecided.

Danish court rejects Kim Davy’s extradition plea

New Delhi, June 30: In a major blow to CBI’s efforts to bring the main accused of Purulia arms drop , Kim Davy, to India, a Danish High Court has today rejected his extradition plea, a CBI official said.

“The court has today (Thursday) rejected on human rights issues the Denmark government’s plea for his extradition to India,” said the official.

The court rejected the plea of the Denmark government despite Davy, on several occasions, admitting to his role in the arms dropping case in the Danish court and before the media, the official said.

US-led raid kills five in Afghanistan

Kabul, June 30: US-led forces have killed at least five private security contractors and injured nine others in an airstrike in the troubled eastern Afghanistan.

The strike took place on a NATO logistics convoy in Sayedabad district of Wardak province, a Press TV correspondent reported on Thursday.

The US led forces reportedly hit the convoy after it was attacked by militants.

NATO officials claim they have only killed militants in the air strike.
