Criminal case against Mail Today for publishing pic of the Delhi gang-rape victim

Delhi Police Monday registered a criminal case against five people, including the publisher and editor of English tabloid Mail Today, for disclosing the identity of the Delhi gang-rape victim, an official said.

The others named are the printer, a reporter and a photographer.

According to Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat, the tabloid, owned by the Living Media Group that also publishes the well-known India Today weekly, carried the victim’s name, photographs of her brother and her southwest Delhi house in Mahavir Enclave.

Molested girl’s brother arrested for rape

The brother of a minor girl who was molested in a moving bus in central Delhi was arrested Monday for raping her, police said.

The girl had run away from her house Saturday night and was molested by an off-duty conductor in a moving bus Saturday night around 11 p.m. at Barakhamba Road.

“We have arrested her brother Nazakat Ali, 19, for raping the girl. He was arrested from Khayala area in west Delhi,” Additional Commissioner of Police V. Renganathan told IANS.

UP govt to give Rs 20 lakh to braveheart’s family

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the family members of Delhi gangrape victim.

The CM has decided to give the financial assistance to the victim’s family from his discritionary quota, an official spokesman said here.

The 23-year-old victim, who hails from Ballia district in UP, died at a hospital in Singapore on Saturday.

The CM had earlier announced a job and financial assistance of Rupees five lakh to the family of the victim.

In the backdrop of the gangrape of a girl here, President Pranab Mukherjee has decided to cancel all New Year celebrations and appealed to the people not come to greet him at ‘Rashtrapati Nilayam’ in Hyderabad, one of his two official retreats.

“In view of the recent tragic event leading to the loss of a young girl, the President has decided not to take part in any celebration of the New year. The President has also decided not to receive any greetings in person.

Cyberabad police recover Rs 40 lakh property from four burglars

The Cyberabad Police on Monday arrested four notorious habitual offenders of Day-cum-Night burglaries and recovered stolen property worth nearly Rs 40 lakh.

According to the police the accused were involved in as many as 33 cases of burglaries in the limits of Cyberabad and Hyderabad Commissionerates. The arrests were made by the Special Operation Team (SOT) of Cyberabad and CCS Balanagar who recovered 1.03 Kgs gold and 5.20 Kgs silver ornaments, all worth Rs 40,00,000.

Police rescue a woman allegedly raped by Maoists in Jharkhand’s Latehar District

Police rescued a woman cadre of the Maoist group here, who has alleged that she was a victim of rape and sexual exploitation at the hands of other Maoists in the area.

According to the police, the rescued woman belonged to Bihar”s Chapra District, and many cases were registered against her.

Kranti Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Latehar, said the woman was abducted by Maoists and was part of their group for the last six months.

Prayers for Ajmal Kasab at mosque in Kerala

Police have launched an investigation into the offering of prayers at a mosque here for Ajmal Kasab, who was hanged for carrying out the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.

The prayers were reportedly offered by an imam on November 23 after the Friday namaz at the mosque at nearby Trikkakara. After the namaz, prayers were offered for departed souls and the priest had reportedly included the name of Kasab.

When the incident leaked out, police began a probe and questioned the mosque’s authorities and those who had participated in the prayers.

Delhi Police to file 1,000 page chargesheet on gang rape

Two days after the death of the 23-year-old girl, who was brutalised and gang-raped on a moving bus in the national capital, the Delhi Police today said it has finalised around 1,000-page charge sheet in connection with the incident and plans to submit it in court on Thursday.

A senior police official said the charge sheet, which is being vetted by legal experts, has cited 30 witnesses in connection with the December 16 incident in which the medical student was gang raped by six men. Amanat died in a Singapore hospital on Saturday morning.

McGrath to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath will be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame during the the third Test between Australia and Sri Lanka starting January 4 in Sydney.

McGrath will join Enid Bakewell and Brian Lara to become third inductee of 2012-13, the ICC said in a statement. “McGrath becomes the 68th male member of the Hall of Fame and joins fellow 2012-13 inductees West Indian Brian Lara and England’s Enid Bakewell in being recognized by the ICC and the living members of the Hall of Fame.”

Kohli doubtful starter for 2nd ODI

Indian batsman Virat Kohli was today rendered a doubtful starter for the second ODI against Pakistan to be held in Kolkata on Thursday after he suffered a foot injury in the first match here.

Kohli suffered the injury while bowling the 41st over of Pakistan’s run chase. His backfoot slipped in the delivery stride and he landed on his knees. He limped off the field and Suresh Raina finished off the last ball of the over.

The BCCI said Kohli’s condition will be monitored and a decision on his availability for the second ODI will be taken over the next couple of days.
