Pre, post Matric scholarships extended till Aug 6

Hyderabad, July 31:: The last date for submission of application forms for Pre Matric and Post Matric Scholarships of the Central Government has been extended till August 6, 2011.

Minister for Minorities Welfare Mohammed Ahmadullah, in a media release, stated that this facility is extended on to those of the students who could not get the income certificate by July 31, and the students are advised to file applications online soon after obtaining income certificates.
He said that no further extension would be given in future.

Pleasant weather ahead in tourist cities

Jeddah, July 31 – The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) expects the Kingdom’s tourist cities to have moderate temperatures during the day and nice weather at night. There is a good chance that rain and thunder clouds will form, with a possibility of rainfall in Al-Baha, Asir and Jizan heights.

The PME said that while the interior parts of the Kingdom will have high temperatures, humidity will be higher in coastal governorates compared to previous years.

Several projects for Haj pilgrims OK’d

Makkah, July 31– The implementation of projects and construction of service utilities for Haj pilgrims have been approved in a meeting chaired by Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah region, here Saturday.

The third session of the third round of Makkah Regional Council saw a review of transport during Haj, road projects proposed for next year’s budget and mechanisms to develop transport infrastructure in the region.

IIROSA Iftar project to help 28,747 families

Jeddah July 31— The International Islamic Relief Organization of Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) has allocated an amount of SR8.175 million under an Iftar project for this year’s Ramadan.
The allocation will benefit 28,747 poor families, widows and divorcees in various parts of the Kingdom.

Dr. Adnan Bin Khalil Basha, Secretary General of the IIROSA, said that the organization every year implements the project through its delegations and offices spread across the Kingdom, with significant support from wealthy persons and philanthropists.

Consult the doctor before start fasting, diabetics advised

Dammam, July 31 — With the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, the Saudi Diabetic and Endocrine Association (SDEA) has issued a bulletin urging all diabetic people to consult their doctors first before they begin to fast.
“It is very essential that citizens, particularly the elderly, to see their doctors and undergo complete evaluation of their blood sugar before embarking on the Ramadan observance,” said Dr. Basem Futa, chairman of the educational committee of SDEA.

KAU team to conduct studies on diabetes

Jeddah, July 31– A Saudi Diabetes Research Group (SDRG) from King Abdulaziz University (KAU) is conducting a field study on diabetes and economic status in Jeddah. The study aims to find ways and means to prevent the growth of the disease.

The team is headed by Suhad Ba Hajri, Biochemistry Professor at KAU, and comprises a number of doctors, specialists, higher education students and medical students of the university.

Kingdom opens Cuban embassy

Havana, July 31 – The Kingdom has opened an embassy in Cuba.
A party to mark the occasion was held at the weekend attended by a number of senior Cuban officials and ambassadors of Arab and other Islamic countriues.
In his speech, Said Bin Hassan Al-Jamie, the Saudi Charge d’Affaires, stressed the deep relations between the two friendly countries.
He said the leaders of the Kingdom and Cuba want to advance relations to the highest levels in all fields.

Autistic society concludes summer program

Jeddah, July 31 – The Saudi Autistic Society’s branch in Makkah concluded its month-long summer activities Saturday. It held various rehabilitation programs for autistic children with different levels of the disease and supported their families by providing education and training courses carried out by child autism specialists.

The closing ceremony was held at the society’s offices in the presence of the children and their families.

Bangalore, July 31: Scam-hit B.S. Yeddyurappa, who resigned Sunday as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) first chief minister in Karnataka, insisted on Lok Sabha member D.V. Sadananda Gowda as his successor, blocking the party’s efforts to evolve consensus.

‘I have proposed Sadananda Gowda for the post of the new chief minister. It is for the party’s high command to decide. I hope Gowda will be acceptable to all,’ Yeddyurappa told reporters soon after submitting his resignation letter to state Governor H.R. Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan amid high drama and a sudden downpour.

Jeddah, July 31– Sheikh Abdullah Bin Awwad Al-Juhani will lead the first 10 rak’as of Taraweeh and Witr prayers, while Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais will lead the last 10 rak’as at the Grand Mosque, it was announced Saturday.
Dr. Saud Al-Shuraim and Sheikh Maher Bin Hamad Al-Muaiqli will lead the prayers in even nights during the last ten days of the holy month. During this period Al-Juhani and Al-Muaiqli will lead the Tarweeh prayers and Al-Shuraim and Al-Sudais will lead the Tahajjud (voluntary night) prayers.

Jeddah Mayoralty can be sued for potholes, says legal expert

Jeddah, July 31 — Road users have the right to sue the Jeddah Mayoralty and claim financial compensation at the Board of Grievances if they suffer any physical injuries or damage to their cars from potholes, says Salih Al-Ghamdi, a legal expert.

Hassan Al-Zahrani, Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Council in Jeddah, held a special session on this problem in wake of an uproar from residents.
He said the council and officials in charge of roads at the mayoralty had reviewed the roads projects and transportation in the governorate.

Close to 90 percent of them are Indians and mostly belong to Andhra Pradesh. 30 injured in train collision in West Bengal

Malda, July 31: At least 30 people have been reportedly injured in a train accident in West Bengal.

According to Headlines Today, six bogies of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express derailed near Malda district.

Another train, Azimganj Passenger, which was coming on the adjacent track later collided with the derailed bogies of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express.

Two bogies of the Azimganj Passenger caught fire after the collision, the report said.

Rescue and relief teams have been rushed to the accident site.

Land bill draft to be modified: Jairam Ramesh

Kolkata, July 31: The latest draft of the land acquisition bill will be modified as there was need for more clarity on some issues, union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said here Sunday.

“This bill is better. But there are specific points we need to clarify,” Ramesh said after his parleys with Debabrata Bandopadhyay, a former bureaucrat considered West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s adviser on land related matters.

He heads a two-member expert panel formed by Banerjee to draft a land policy in the state.

Ongole, July 31: A spurned lover attacked a girl, who is his classmate, with a knife here on Saturday. According to the police, Bathula Nagarjuna of Vijayawada, a third year BTech (IT) student of SSN Engineering College, fell in love with his classmate, two years ago.

On knowing about the affair, the girl’s parents fixed her marriage with another boy. The girl started distancing herself from Nagarjuna after her marriage was fixed with another boy.

Two die in blast at stone quarry

Warangal, July 31: Police on Saturday registered a case on the blast at a stone-crushing unit on the outskirts of Lohita in Sangem mandal limits late on Friday night. Two persons died and three others suffered serious injuries in the mishap.

Partner of the crushing unit Laka Ramulu (55), belonging to Ramachandrapuram village, died on the spot while a worker Velpula Babu (35), who suffered grievous injuries, died while undergoing treatment in MGM Hospital in Warangal. The injured — Velpula Bakka Babu, Ladella Saraiah, Takallapalli Venkateswara Rao — are receiving treatment in MGM.
