Petition challenging Modi’s election from Varanasi

Ajay Rai, who contested as Congress’ candidate from Varanasi in the Lok Sabha polls, today filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court challenging the election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from that parliamentary constituency.

In his petition, he alleged that in his affidavit Modi had left blank columns relating to his wife Yashoda Ben’s PAN card details and her income which violated Supreme Court’s directions.

OSCE suspends deployment of monitors in Ukraine

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Monday said it has halted further monitoring activities in Ukraine due to security reasons.

Alexander Hug, deputy chief monitor of the OSCE’s special monitoring mission to Ukraine, said OSCE has suspended further deployment of monitoring teams in eastern Ukraine, Xinhua reported.

Hug said monitoring would be resumed after the security situation improves.

“We need weapons to disappear, we need checkpoints to disappear and we need freedom of movement,” Hug said at the OSCE headquarters in Vienna.

Probe into Meghalaya politician-militant nexus only after proof

In the wake of growing demands for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the alleged nexus between politicians and militants, Meghalaya Home Minister Roshan Warjri Monday said there was no need for an inquiry until there was concrete evidence.

“There are lots of allegations about the politician-militant nexus. I am concerned about those and the government as a whole is discussing the issue. However, these allegations are vague,” Warjri told journalists.

“We need to have concrete grounds to begin such an inquiry,” he said.

Gujarat ‘snoopgate’ probe panel gets third extension

Gujarat government today gave another extension, this time for four months, to the Sugnya Bhatt Commission probing the alleged snooping on a woman architect by police in 2009.

The two-member judicial panel, headed by Justice (retd) Sugnya Bhatt, has been given its third extension since being set up by the then Narendra Modi government in November 2013, days after “snoopgate” came to light.

“We have given an extension of four months, that is up to October 31, to the Bhatt Commission,” said V P Patel, Secretary, Law Department.

DU cutoffs soar; commerce cutoff at 99.75

Delhi University’s first cutoff list for admission to the three-year undergraduate programme soared higher compared to that of last year, with the percentage for commerce soaring as high as 99.75.

Whether it be Hindu College or Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), the cutoff for commerce increased by at least two percent.

In Hindu College, the cutoff for commerce was between 99.75 and 97.25 percent, while last year it was 96.25 to 92 percent.

Similarly, in SRCC, the commerce cutoff is between 99.25 and 97.5 percent, while last year, it was 97-93.75 percent.

India has lodged its protest in an “effective manner” over reports that China has in its recent map shown Arunachal Pradesh as its territory, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today.

Andhra Pradesh FY15 credit plan released, outlay at Rs 91k-cr

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu released the state’s first credit plan here today with a total outlay of Rs 91,459 crore for the 2014-15 fiscal.

Of the total outlay, Rs 77,894 crore has been earmarked for lending to the priority sector. Out of this, Rs 56,019 crore has been earmarked for the agriculture sector, including a short-term production credit of Rs 41,978 crore.
