200 wait listed Hajj pilgrims selected

According to press note issued by Prof. S.A. Shukoor, Special Officer of A.P.S. Hajj Committee 200 wait listed Hajj Pilgrims have been selected for the Hajj season of 2014. Thai tanker believed hijacked on way to Indonesia

A Thai tanker, initially believed to have been hijacked, is on its way to Indonesia, the International Maritime Bureau said Saturday.

The ship lost contact after leaving Singapore Tuesday, which was on its way to Pontianak on Indonesia’s Kalimantan, Xinhua quoted Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Centre as saying .

There are 14 crew members on board the diesel oil tanker MT Orapin 4. The centre has urged other vessels to keep a look-out for the missing tanker.

The international maritime agency recorded 23 actual or attempted attacks from January to March, mainly off Indonesia.

Italy pulls nearly 3,000 African migrants to safety

Italian navy pulled nearly 3,000 African sea migrants to safety early Saturday, media reports said.

Four vessels were participating in the high-seas rescue operation, transferring to Sicily Island, in southern Italy, at least 2,800 migrants, Xinhua quoted Rai state television as saying.

Toll from cholera outbreak in South Sudan reaches 27: UN

The number of people dying of cholera outbreak has reached 27 in South Sudanese capital of Juba with suspected cases turning more than double from 395 cases last week to 892, the UN humanitarian agency said Saturday.

According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Crisis (OCHA) South Sudan, living conditions in displacement sites continued to deteriorate due to flooding caused by heavy rains, especially in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile, Xinhua reported.

Quake hits Philippines

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Philippines Saturday evening, the US Geological Survey said.

The temblor’s epicentre, with a depth of 4.04 km, was initially determined to be at 9.3725 degrees north latitude and 126.6145 degrees east longitude, Xinhua reported.

Croatia beat Mali 2-1 in World Cup warmup

Croatia snatched a 2-1 victory over Mali Saturday in their first friendly match in preparation for the World Cup in Brazil.

Ivan Perisic opened the scoring after 15 minutes and the Wolfsburg forward completed his brace midway through the second half, Xinhua reported.

Lebanon warns refugees against returning to Syria

Lebanon’s interior ministry Saturday warned all Syrian refugees registered in the country not to go back to Syria as of Sunday, threatening that those who leave “will be deprived of their refugee status”.

The decision aimed to preserve “the safety of refugees” in Lebanon, Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement, adding that all concerned border authorities will be notified of this measure through the country’s General Security.
