AAP Government didn’t allocate land for power stations: Piyush Goyal

Four proposed power sub-stations which can end electricity crisis in the national capital have failed to see the light of day as land has not been allocated to even one of them by Delhi Government, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said on Sunday.

The Minister said once these four substations at Rajghat, Tughlakabad, Dwarka and Karampura are ready, the Centre could bring in 7,400 MW of power to Delhi, which is substantially higher than estimated demand even in the next few years.

3 militants gunned down as army foils infiltration bid

Three militants were killed on Sunday as Army foiled an infiltration bid near Line of Control in Tangdhar sector of Kashmir.

“The infiltration bid was foiled in the wee hours today as a group of heavily armed terrorists were crossing the LoC,” an army official said. This is the second infiltration bid by militants in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district within a week. Three militants have been killed while the operation is still in progress, the official said.

Heat wave claims 41 more lives in Andhra Pradesh, nationwide toll 2248

Torrid weather conditions continued to prevail in several parts of the country today, claiming 41 more lives in worst-hit Andhra Pradesh since yesterday as the nationwide death toll mounted to 2248.

According to Andhra Pradesh’s disaster management department, 41 more deaths have been reported from different parts of the state in the last 24 hours taking the death toll in the ongoing spell of heat wave to 1677. The toll in the state on Saturday stood at 1636. Today’s figures from neighbouring Telangana were not available so far. 541 people had died in the state till yesterday.

Monsoon to miss forecast date, likely to hit Kerala coast by June 4

With conditions not favouring its progress, Southwest Monsoon is expected to hit the Kerala coast by June 4, three days after its normal onset date, the MET department said on Sunday.

According to DS Pai, lead monsoon forecaster of the Indian Meteorological Department, conditions are still not favourable for the progress of the monsoon and there will be a delay.

The IMD, in its preliminary forecast, had said that the Southwest Monsoon rains will hit the Kerala coast on May 30.

Modi to become first Indian PM to visit Israel

Narendra Modi will be travelling to Israel, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the Jewish country with which bilateral defence cooperation is on an upswing.

No dates have been finalised for Modi’s visit which will take place on mutually convenient dates, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

Swaraj said she will be travelling to Israel this year, besides Palestine and Jordan.

India had established “full” diplomatic relationship with Israel in 1992 though it had recognised the country in 1950. No Indian Prime Minister or President has ever visited that country.

President Mukherjee arrives in Sweden

President Pranab Mukherjee arrived in Stockholm on Sunday for his three-day official visit of Sweden.

The official twitter account of the Rashtrapati Bhavan shared the information.

PresidentMukherjee arrived in Stockholm this evening and was welcomed by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel,” it posted.

“Swedish fighter planes escorted the Presidential flight from the time it entered Swedish air space till landing,” it added.

The President, who later greeted Sweden King Carl Gustaf XVI, was also accorded a guard of honour.

Mamata Banerjee congratulates Mohun Bagan for winning I-League

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday congratulated Mohun Bagan A.C. for winning the 2014-2015 season of the I-League.

Banerjee took to twitter to congratulate the Mariners.

“After 11 years the Football I-League trophy comes back to #Bengal. Congratulations Mohun Bagan,” she tweeted.

279 migrant Indian workers died in Qatar last year, Amnesty report says

As many as 279 migrant workers from India, one of the largest migrant worker sending countries, died in 2014 in Qatar – the host of 2022 Fifa World Cup, Amnesty International said in its latest report.

Titled “Promising Little, Delivering Less: Qatar and Migrant Abuse ahead of the 2022 Football World Cup”, the report cites official statistics of the government of India.

Ms Swaraj said she will be travelling to Israel this year, besides Palestine and Jordan. India had established “full” diplomatic relationship with Israel in 1992 though it had recognised the country in 1950.

The then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had become the first premier from that country to visit India when he came here in 2003. He is credited with transforming bilateral relations from diminutive defence and trade cooperation to the strategic ties of today.

PM Modi received gifts worth Rs 3.11 lakh on foreign tours in 10 months: RTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received 65 gifts worth Rs 3.11 lakh during his foreign visits in the past ten months since assuming charge last year, an RTI query revealed.

On February 19 Modi received gold and diamond studded cufflinks, valued at Rs 75,000, by a host country.

The PM was also twice given tea-sets and books as gifts. He also was presented a statue of Lord Buddha, whose messages he has invoked in several of his speeches abroad, said Foreign Ministry in response to an RTI query.

Hundreds of people have pledged to boycott United Airlines after a Muslim passenger alleged discrimination due to Islamophobia over an unopened can of Diet Coke onboard the American airliner.

Tahera Ahmad’s Facebook post over the “clear” discrimination went almost immediately went viral on Saturday.

The Muslim chaplain at Chicago’s Northwestern University was onboard a flight this weekend when she asked for an unopened can of soda for hygienic reasons and says was told, “Well, I’m sorry. I just can’t give you an unopened can, so no Diet Coke for you.”
