PM visits Ansari, greets him on Eid

New Delhi, August 31: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday visited Vice President Hamid Ansari and greeted him on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, an official said here.

‘Prime minister visited the vice president. The prime minister wished him and stayed for some time,’ an official told IANS.

Manmohan Singh drove down to Ansari’s official residence at 6 Maulana Azad Road at 12:30 p.m.

A host of cabinet ministers and other leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, were among those who met Ansari to greet him on the occasion, the official added.

Scuffle over scarf in park

New York, August 31: A scuffle broke out at an amusement park in Westchester County on Tuesday when a group of Muslims there to celebrate the end of Ramadan were told that women could not wear their head coverings on certain rides, park officials and witnesses said. Fifteen people were arrested.

The Muslim American Society of New York had arranged the trip to Playland Park in Rye, which was expected to bring some 3,000 people to the site from New York City, as well as surrounding suburbs like Yonkers and parts of Long Island.

Resolution on Afzal Guru? Omar asks

Srinagar, August 31: “If J and K assembly had passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru, would the reaction have been as muted? I think not,” chief minister Omar Abdullah said on Wednesday.

Reacting to the Tamil Nadu assembly resolution’s on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s killers, Omar Abdullah moaned that the sentiments of the people in Kashmir were unfairly treated outside the state.

In the Kashmir Valley, the death sentence awarded to Afzal Guru for the 2001 Parliament attack has been a sensitive one.

Govt to honour 58 teachers on Sept 5

Hyderabad, August 31: The State Government on Tuesday released a list of 58 teachers to be honoured on September 5, on the occasion of birthday celebrations of Sarvepally Radhakrishnan.

Besides, a list of 32 teachers was also released by the National Foundation for Teachers’ Welfare for honouring them on the Teachers’ Day. The state government honours teachers every year, as a mark of respect for Sarvepally Radhakrishnan, who was also the second President of India.

Two injured as gas tanker mishap

Visakhapatnam, August 31: Two persons sustained injuries when a gas tanker turned turtle near bypass junction on National Highway No 5 at Anakapalle in Visakhapatnam district on Tuesday.

According to Anakapalle police, the gas tanker heading towards Visakhapatnam from Rajahmundry overturned near bypass junction at Anakapalle injuring the driver and cleaner of the tanker. Fortunately, a major mishap was averted as the gas in tanker was not leaked.

New Delhi, August 31: In the wake of 26 MLAs loyal to Y S Jaganmohan Reddy submitting their resignation, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy today ruled out any threat to his government saying it would last its full term.

Dismissing suggestions that Jagan is being targeted, the chief minister said the CBI probe was initiated on the directions of the Andhra Pradesh High Court into the companies invested in firms owned by Jagan.

Child pornography rising in India

New Delhi, August 31: There is a steady rise in the number of child pornography cases registered and arrests in India.

Across India, the number of cases stood at 99 in 2007, 105 in 208 and 139 in 2009, Minister of State for Home M. Ramachandran told the Lok Sabha.

The tally for arrests was 86 in 2007, 90 in 2008 and 141 in 2009.

In the same period, Kerala and Maharashtra accounted for most cases and arrests, the minister said.

Maharashtra registered 27, 17 and 25 child pornography cases in the three years respectively. For Kerala, the figures were 20, 39 and 44.

Satyam scam: HC rejects Raju’s bail plea

Hyderabad, August 31: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail petitions of B Ramalinga Raju and seven other accused in the multi-crore Satyam Computer scam.

Justice Samudrala Govindarajulu, who heard the arguments on the bail petitions on August 27 dismissed all the bail applications. It was for the fourth time in August alone that the different courts have denied bail to Raju and other accused in the Satyam scam.
