Thousands offer Eid prayers in Kashmir peacefully

Srinagar, August 31:Thousands of Muslims Wednesday offered prayers in the Kashmir Valley amid tight security on the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr which was marred by protests and clashes last year.

Wearing new clothes, they greeted each other at various Eidgahs here where special arrangements had been made by the authorities to facilitate the Eid prayers.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah offered prayers in Sonawar area of the city while separatist leader and chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, offered prayers at the Eidgah grounds in the Old City.

Companies rely on employee referral for hiring

New Delhi, August 31:When it comes to recruitment, companies, especially in IT, banking and financial sectors, are increasingly relying on the reference of their existing employees as it reduces hiring costs and attrition rate, an industry survey revealed.

Almost 32 percent of the total hiring by IT and IT-enabled firms during the first six months of the current fiscal were done through employee referral, according to a survey conducted by hiring vendor consolidator firm MyHiringClub.com.

Uttar Pradesh gets new top cop – for just a month!

Lucknow, August 31:The Uttar Pradesh government has named R.K. Tiwari as the state’s new director general of police (DGP) — for just a month as he is to retire Sep 30.

The decision came late Tuesday night after the retirement of incumbent Karamveer Singh.

Chief Minister Mayawati handpicked Tiwari for the coveted post instead of Atul Gupta, whose name was earlier Tuesday finalised for the job.

Tiwari assumes charge as DGP in addition to his existing appointment as director general of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).

ATM machine with cash stolen in Srinagar

Srinagar, August 30:An ATM machine along with cash was stolen in the uptown area of the city, a police spokesman said here this afternoon.

He said during the intervening night of August 29 and 30, some unidentified persons took away an ATM machine and cash at Paraypora on Srinagar-Airport road in the uptown.

He said exact details about the cash looted by the thieves was not known.

Burglars made two abortive bids to loot cash from an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) in the city during the past one week.

BCCI oppose govt’s move to regulate cricket

New Delhi, August 30:The BCCI seems to have drawn swords with the government for its move to bring the national cricket board under its ambit.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the move by the government was unacceptable and only organisations which receive funds from the government could come under the RTI Act.

“Only organisations taking grant from the government can come under RTI so only federations while BCCI doesn’t,” BCCI spokesperson Rajeev Shukla said outside Parliament here today.

Teenager body drowns in nallah in Kashmir

Srinagar, August 30:A teenager was drowned in a nallah in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, official sources said here today.

They said Rafiq Ahmad Khatana was taking a bath in nallah Sindh at Margund, Ganderbal.

However, he drowned in the nallah though some people attempted to save him.

Later, his body was recovered and handed over to his relatives,they said.

Youth injured in firing incident, dies in Srinagar

Srinagar, August 30;A youth, who was injured in a firing incident on August 22, died in the S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) today, official sources said here.

They said Shahid Ahmad Khan, who was injured after a 12 bore gun went off in his house at Kashi Mohalla, Batmaloo, died in the hospital.

Police has registered a case and detained one person in this
connection.

Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, August 31: Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan, was Wednesday celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety across Hyderabad.

Thousands of men and children clad in new attire and wearing skull caps offered Namaz-e-Eid in Eidgahs or open grounds and hundreds of mosques.

The biggest congregation here was held at the historic Mir Alam Eidgah, where over 300,000 offered prayers. Moulana Abdullah Qureshi Al-Azhari led the prayers.

BJP Leader sister drugged for property

New delhi,August 31 :The 60-year-old sister of Delhi BJP leader Harsh Vardhan was given around 70 sleeping pills and dumped to die near the AIIMS mortuary by her daughter-in-law, police said on Tuesday. Reena Singhal, 28, of Anand Vihar in east Delhi, was arrested Saturday for drugging Asha Singhal with a
view to kill her and grab her property, police said.

Reena procured sleep inducing drug Libotryp and mixed around 70 tablets in milk, which she gave it to her mother-in-law Aug 24 at around 11am, a police officer said.

The woman immediately fell unconscious.

Molester beaten to death by teenage girl

New Delhi,August 31 :A GIRL in her teens, who along with copassengers allegedly thrashed a youth for molesting her in a shared autorickshaw, has been apprehended after the 27- year- old assaulter died.

The Delhi Police booked the deceased, Ajay, for molesting the girl. When he died two days later, his brother lodged an FIR against the girl, believed to be a martial arts exponent, and the co- passengers.
