Nearly 79 percent polling in Haryana bypolls

Chandigarh, November 30: Nearly 79 percent voter turnout was witnessed in the by-elections to the Haryana assembly from the Adampur and Ratia constituencies Wednesday, officials said.

While Adampur in Hisar district recorded nearly 76 percent polling, the voting percentage in Ratia in Fatehabad district was nearly 82.

Voting for the two assembly seats in Haryana began Wednesday morning amid tight security.

In the Adampur constituency, considered a stronghold of former chief minister Bhajan Lal’s family, his daughter-in-law, Renuka Bishnoi, the wife of Hisar MP Kuldeep Bishnoi, is the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) candidate.

A total of 137,949 electors in Adampur and 176,129 electors in Ratia constituency were eligible to cast their votes, Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Sumita Mishra said.

The Adampur seat in Hisar district fell vacant last month following the election of HJC president Kuldeep Bishnoi to parliament from the Hisar parliamentary constituency.

The Ratia seat had fallen vacant in September after the death of sitting Indian National Lok Dal legislator Gian Chand Odh following illness.
