18 protesters injured in Yemen

Sanaa, July 01: At least 18 protesters have been injured during clashes between policemen and thousands of anti-government protesters in western Yemen, witnesses say.

The violence broke out in al-Hudaydah province on Thursday, Xinhua reported.

Police fired into the air to disperse protesters demanding the establishment of a transitional council to rule the country in downtown al-Hudaydah city.

Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh was seriously injured in a rocket attack on his compound on June 3 and travelled to Saudi Arabia to receive medical treatment.

US man wrongly jailed for 18 years gets $1.4 mn

Washington, July 01: A US man who spent 18 years in jail for slaying six people he did not commit Thursday received $1.4 million in compensation, Xinhua reported.

Anthony Graves received the money during a private meeting with Texas Comptroller Susan Combs.

Graves was convicted of helping Robert Earl Carter kill a grandmother and five children in 1992. The two men were sentenced to death for the killings.

However, Carter, the only man who tied Graves to the case, admitted before his lethal injection in 1998 that Graves did not play a role in the killings.

More MKO members defect to Iraq

Baghdad, July 01: Four more members of the anti-Iran terrorist Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) have fled Camp Ashraf and defected to the Iraqi forces, a senior Iraqi official says.

Iraq’s Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammed al-Askari said in a news conference on Thursday that the MKO defectors have escaped from the camp in Diyala province 60km north of Baghdad, a Media correspondent reported.

Yemenis blast Saudi meddling

Sanaa, July 01: Yemeni anti-government protesters have once again held demonstrations, condemning Saudi Arabia’s interference in the country’s internal affairs.

“Al Saud, listen to millions of people: Saleh will not come back,” the public chanted, according to video footage aired on Media.

The rallies came as Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh continues to receive treatment in Saudi Arabia for the injuries he received in an attack on the presidential palace on June 3.

Caste factor behind Dinesh Reddy’s appointment?

Rs 25,000 for kin of weavers who commit suicide

Hyderabad, July 01: Minister for Weavers’ Welfare and Textiles P Shankar Rao, who was caught on a wrong foot on the reported number of weavers who committed suicides from Dubbakka, Medak district while offering a package of Rs 25,000 to their families.

He however, realized his mistake and later said that 115 weavers’ suicide deaths were reported.

The Minister was also at the receiving end while giving this information, as confusion prevailed over the announcement of the said package at the press meeting at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Hyderabad, July 01: Lok Satta Party President Jayaprakash Narayan on Thursday demanded that the proposed Lok Pal Bill also provide for the appointment of a Lokayukta in each State and an ombudsman in each district of the country.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders of all parties, copies of which were made available to the press, Dr Narayan said that Parliament can now make a law to tackle corruption all over the country with the Government of India ratifying the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

Not against Metro Rail project, but its design: TRS

Jai foundation moves SHRC, seeks total ban on plastic bags

Hyderabad, July 01: Jai Ho Foundation president G Srinivas Goud on Thursday approached the State Human Rights Commission, seeking it to get the state government to direct Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to impose total ban on the usage of plastic carry bags in the city.

Mr Srinivas Goud said that he had urged the SHRC to direct the state government to get the GHMC implement a total ban on plastic bags, instead of allowing bags over 40 microns thick.

He said that total ban is essential to protect the environment for posterity.

Post Dey murder, cops warn criminals, gangsters

Mumbai, July 01: The daylight murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey has prompted Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik to ask all police stations in the metropolis to update the list of criminals and gangsters and send them a stern message that any “nuisance” from them will not be tolerated.

In a conference held on Thursday by the top cop with senior police officials, Patnaik talked about “zero tolerance” policy towards criminals. He told his colleagues to send a strong message to the gangsters and criminals by initiating stern action against them, police officials said.
