Senior Maoist leader surrenders

Hyderabad, June 09: Vexed with the Maoists philosophy and unhappy with the leadership, a senior leader of the CPI (Maoist) gave himself up to the police in Vizianagaram district today.

Kondagorri Kurma Rao alias Kurranna was a member of the Maoist Nagavali area committee and was allegedly involved in several offences, including blasting of Gummada railway station, a mandal development office, and attack on Udayagiri police station.

Vizianagaram district Superintendent of Police Y Gangadhar said the latter was vexed with the Maoist philosophy and wanted to lead a normal life.

Kidnapped NASR School student killed, 3 held

Hyderabad, June 09: A 12-year-old boy, Syed Usman Mohd Quadri, who was kidnapped from the Old City more than two weeks ago was allegedly killed by his abductors in Shadnagar.

Police took three kidnappers into custody and are investigating.

One other man who was earlier taken into custody was let off after police failed to establish his role in the kidnap, sources said.

Parents protest Princess Esin School fee hike

Hyderabad, June 09: The unabated increase in school fee is taking its toll on helpless parents who seem to have no option but to protest and fight for a rollback.

The Parents Ad-hoc Committee of Princess Esin Girls High School in Purani Haveli held a press meet at the APUWJ office, Basheerbagh in regard to the unjustified fee-enhancement and also about other issues pertaining to school management.

The parents of the school allege that in the last four years, the school has been increasing the fees by 30 per cent each year.

MCA student commits suicide, parents allege ragging

Warrangal, June 09: Dande Devender Kumar (22), an MCA second- year student of Vasavi College of Engineering in Hyderabad, committed suicide allegedly due to ragging by his seniors. He put his head under a running train at Dharamaram on Sunday.

Police, who found his body on the railway track, established his identity with the help of an identity card recovered from his pocket.

Hailing from Choppadandi village in Karimnagar, Kumar left for Hyderabad on June 3 stating that he had to attend exams from June 9.

New Delhi, June 09: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan empathises with tennis ace Roger Federer, because the actor like the French Open Champion feels no embarrassment in shedding tears.

“But he (Federer) is certainly the only one to cry like a baby each time he wins a final. That is one thing I share in common with him. I cry like hell each time any of my films do well, but I also cry when they don’t,” the actor wrote on his blog.

We need to fill gap between rich and poor: Zuma

Durban, June 09: Emphasising the need for closing the gap between the rich and the poor in the country, South African President Jacob Zuma warned that if poverty was ignored it would be a risky situation.

“If that happens you are certainly sitting on a situation that will explode one day,” he said.

Mr Zuma said that before the financial crisis began affecting South Africa, the economy was growing but the poverty levels were deepening.

4 students charred to death at teacher’s house

Kakinada, June 09: Four students died and two others suffered serious burns in a fire at their teacher’s house in Mayapatnam village in U Kothapalli mandal in East Godavari district. Electric short circuit is said to be the reason behind the fire.

While two students died on the spot, two others succumbed to burns at the government general hospital on Monday. Sources said the short circuit caused by loose wiring in a TV set spread to the false ceiling of a wedding pandal in the house where the students and the teacher slept late on Sunday night.

Medical teams conduct tests for BA flight passangers

Hyderabad, June 09: Ten teams from the district medical and health department visited the residences of 54 passengers, who were seated three rows ahead and three rows behind the 28-year-old passenger who tested positive for H1N1, on the British Airways-277 flight for verification and anti-viral treatment in the city on Monday, in order to prevent the spread of the infection.

Woman held for stabbing ‘abusive’ husband to death

New Delhi, June 09: A young woman has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her “alcoholic and abusive” husband to death in Rohini here.

Sunita alias Neha was arrested on Saturday after she purportedly confessed to the murder to her father Chandoo Lal, who reported the matter to the police.

Pakistan beat Netherlands by 82 runs

London, June 09: Shahid Afridi took 4 wickets as Pakistan bundled out Netherlands for 93 runs to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the Twenty20 World Cup.

Pakistan set their opponents 175-5 in their innings after captain Younis Khan won the toss and elected to bat first.

The Netherlands were only required to score 151 runs in their innings due to Pakistan needing to win by at least 25 runs having started the day bottom of the group after losing to England in their opening match.

Shahid Afridi starred with the ball for Pakistan, finishing his four overs with figures of 4-11.

Vijayashanti shows up at media meet

Hyderabad, June 09: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) Member of Parliament Vijayashanti showed up before the media here on Monday evening as if denying reports that she was missing after getting elected to Parliament from Medak.

Reacting to complaints against her in police stations that she had been absconding since the declaration of election results, she said, the charges were filed with the aim of targeting her and TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao. She counselled media not to be a party to cheap tactics played against Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao and herself.

‘Obama gives deadline to Israel for Palestine’

Washington, June 09: US President Barack Obama gives Israel a two-year deadline for the finalization of a two-state solution amid sharply opposing positions in Washington and Tel Aviv over the issue of Palestinian statehood.

President Obama raised the issue of an independent Palestinian state with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israeli official’s visit to Washington last month, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

According to the report, the plan envisions a Middle East peace deal by 2011.

New Delhi, June 09:RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Tuesday joined SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav in opposing women’s reservation bill in its present form, alleging that it was a “big conspiracy” to prevent the backward sections from coming up and to “finish” the regional parties.

Prasad, who was joined by former Uttar Pradesh CM Kalyan Singh, warned of a major movement if quotas for the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, OBCs and minorities was not included in the legislation.

Virender Sehwag out of T20 World Cup

New Delhi, June 09: India’s opening batsman Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Twenty20 World Cup in England due to a shoulder injury.

Sehwag was advised to undergo a surgery for his shoulder injury, sources said.

The hard-hitting batsman, earlier, had to skip the opening match against Bangladesh including all the practice matches.

Indian pilgrims accuse Israel of religious profiling

Panaji, June 09: A group of Goans who went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem Tuesday accused the Israeli authorities of religious profiling even as the state government sought a full fledged probe into a visa racket run by travel agents based in Goa and Israel.

Edmund Antao, co-ordinator of Crusaders for Jesus with Mary – a Christian faith building group that led a batch of 97 pilgrims to Israel’s holy destinations last month, told reporters here that Israeli officials denied visas to 14 members of the entourage on account of religious profiling.
