Gangrape case: Danish woman identifies accused in court

A Danish woman, who was allegedly gangraped by eight persons here last year, today appeared in a city court, identified some of the accused and recorded her statement.

According to court sources, the 52-year-old woman, in an in-camera proceeding, narrated to Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja the entire incident of January 14, 2014 and identified three of the six adult accused as the ones who had gangraped her.

The woman came to the court from Denmark in pursuance of summons issued earlier.

Jung hosts lunch for Kejriwal

In indication of a possible rapprochement, Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today hosted a lunch for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia during which a number of contentious issues including functioning of Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) were discussed.

The move is seen as indication of a “truce” in the political circles between the LG and the AAP government which have been involved in a bitter fight over administrative control in the national capital.

RSS distances itself from Govindacharya’s comment

With its former leader Govindacharya criticising the Narendra Modi government over the Lalitgate issue, RSS today said whatever stated by him are his personal views and not those of the Sangh.

The RSS also said that it does not express its views in public and has neither appointed anyone as its ideologue.

“Whatever has been expressed by Govindacharaya is his personal opinion and he is entitled to it. They are not the views of the RSS,” RSS joint general secretary Dattatreya Hosbole told PTI.

Blood donation camps organised in hospitals

Scores of people today donated blood at blood donation camps organised in several government hospitals to mark the National Doctors Day here.

Camps were organised at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, BR Ambedkar Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital and Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital, among others.

The Resident Doctors Association of the AIIMS also marked the occasion by holding a talk show on the ‘easy life for busy doctors’.

Former president A P J Abdul Kalam was present on the occasion.

Black money deposited in Dushyant’s account: Kamat

AICC General Secretary Gurudas Kamat today alleged that the BJP was silent on the issue of black money because “it was deposited in the account of” Dushyant Singh.

Kamat was on a whirlwind tour of Kota-Bundi-Tonk districts along with PCC President Sachin Pilot and Rameshwar Dudi, Leader of Opposition.

He said that BJP had made the black money an election issue but was sitting silent now because “the black money was deposited in the account of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s son Dushyant Singh”.

Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka return from trip abroad

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice president Rahul and Priyanka are back to the national capital after their “short international visit”.

While Rahul Gandhi arrived today, Sonia and Priyanka, who had left before Rahul, returned yesterday.

On June 20, when Rahul had left for visit abroad, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said, “Sonia Gandhi is currently travelling on a short international visit for personal reasons”.

The party has declined to divulge the reasons for their foreign visit.

Egypt approves new terrorism law after deadly attacks

In the wake of a spate of terrorist attacks this week that killed dozens, including Egypt’s top prosecutor, the cabinet on Wednesday approved a new anti-terrorism law, state-run Al-Ahram Online reported.

The cabinet also backed a new law to regulate parliamentary elections giving judges a longer period to rule on appeals against elections results, Al-Ahram said.

The terrorism and election laws were due to enter into force once they were signed by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Six black churches burnt after Charleston church massacre

In the two weeks after a racially motivated massacre claimed lives of nine African-Americans, at least six predominantly African-American churches in south US had been burnt down, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

The latest fire occurred on Tuesday night in the Mount Zion Church in Greeleyville, South Carolina, 20 years after it was set ablaze by the white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan.

The fire left the church roofless and given lightning and storms were reported overnight in the region, authorities said it was still too early to determine the cause of the fire.

SHE Teams nab septuagenarian among four for eve-teasing

SHE Team of Hyderabad City Police has caught four persons for teasing women at four different places in the City.
In the first instance, one Mohammad Shadiq Ali, 71, of Valmikinagar under Armoor mandal, Nizamabad district was sitting at Koti bus stop and was trying to touch women inappropriately. The victims were frightened by his acts and shifted to other places. This scene was videographed by the SHE teams present there and the accused was caught. He was produced before the magistrate, who sentenced him to two days’ imprisonment.

None is leaving Congress, says TPCC chief

TPCC Chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy has said nobody, including former APCC Chief D Srinivas and CLP leader K Jana Reddy were leaving the Congress.

On Wednesday, Uttam Kumar responded to the news that both senior leaders — D Srinivas and K Jana Reddy — were leaving the Congress and made it clear that both would not leave the party. He said he didn’t know as to why Jana Reddy met TRS MP and senior leader B Vinod Kumar. He exuded confidence that there was no dearth of leadership in the Congress in Telangana State. The Congress will sweep the ensuing elections in the State, he added.

Assistant engineer attached to Vanasthalipuram power sub-station Ashok Kumar was trapped by the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau in a raid conducted on Wednesday.
According to the information, the ACB sleuths arranged a trap and caught the AE red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant for doing an official favor of giving power connection to an apartment building. Allu Arjun calls on cancer-hit children

Tollywood actor Allu Arjun here on Wednesday consoled four children, who were suffering from cancer.

Knowing about the deteriorating condition of the cancer affected children through Make A Wish Foundation, Allu Arjun called on the kids and spent time with them to make them happy. He also talked to the doctors and parents of the children about the condition of the kids.

Speaking on the occasion, Arjun said fulfilling the wish of children on the death bed was a great thing. He also called upon people to lend cooperation to Make A Wish Foundation in its noble activity. (NSS)

CPI-M calls farmers’ protest rallies in AP from Aug. 1

AP State secretary of CPI-M P. Madhu has said the crop loan burden of the farmers in Andhra Pradesh was increasing heavily year after year.

Speaking to mediapersons at Vijayawada, the CPI-M leader said the Rs 19,000 crore additional crop loan burden has risen to Rs 65,000 crore in a gap of two years. While this was so, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who had proclaimed that he would waive crop loans of the farmers, has washed off his hands by waiving crop loans to the tune of just Rs 7,000 crore.

71-year-old man among four held for eve-teasing in Hyderabad

The roving ‘SHE Teams’ that keeps a hawkish eye on eve-teasers have arrested four men, including a septuagenarian, for allegedly teasing women in separate cases in the city, police said today.

According to police, all the four accused were arrested over the past couple of days.

“71-year-old Mohammad Shadiq Ali, a retired employee, who was sitting at Koti bus stop here and was trying to touch ladies inappropriately. The victims who were sitting at the bus stop beside him were frightened by his acts and were shifting to other places,” a release from Hyderabad Police said.

Aunt murders 18-month-old baby girl

In a shocking incident, an 18-month-old baby girl was murdered by her aunt in Weaker Sections Colony of Bhavanipuram.

According to Chandanagar police, victim’s mother Renuka had an argument with her husband’s sister-in-law Rajya Lakshmi over some trivial issue on Tuesday evening. She reportedly abused her by taking the name of her child who died recently. A few minutes later, out of anger, Rajya Lakshmi took Renuka’s daughter Jyotsna and dumped her in the water sump and closed it.

A Head Constable commits suicide

A Head Constable attached to Vigilance Enforcement Office (Rural Unit) committed suicide at his office in Saifabad here on Wednesday.

The HC, V Devraj Naik, resorted to the extreme step by consuming some unknown poison. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. Ill-health is suspected to have driven him to suicide. He was a residence of Siddarth Nagar in Balapur, according to Saifabad Sub-Inspector G Mahalakshmi Kant. (INN)
