Obama wins another term in White House

Barack Obama has won a second term as US president, defeating his Republican rival Mitt Romney in a closely contested battle that seemed almost to close to call till the end.

Obama, who four years ago was elected as the US’ first African American president, won 274 electoral votes, four more than what was needed to win.

As celebrations broke out across the country, a victorious Obama tweeted: “Four more years.”

“We’re all in this together. That’s how we campaigned, and that’s who we are. Thank you,” said another tweet from Obama, the son of a Kenyan father and a white American.

Andhra assembly adjourned twice over Telangana

The Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly remained paralysed for the fifth and last day of the brief monsoon session with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) stalling the proceedings to press its demand for passing a resolution on Telangana.

Speaker N. Manohar adjourned the house for an hour for the second time since morning as TRS members surrounded the podium, demanding that the house pass a resolution for formation of Telangana state.

Harassed in Pakistan, homeless in India

“We would much rather die than go back to Pakistan,” said a Hindu migrant echoing the sentiments of many migrants who have come here in the last few days from Pakistan.

The exodus of Pakistani Hindus is on the rise. In the last fortnight alone, a fresh batch of 350 migrants, including 150 children and 90 women, have arrived here.

They were initially lodged in a local temple, but as the numbers swelled, it was impossible for them to continue to stay in the premises. They have since vacated, and now live in tents.

Anti-Islam film actress says maker duped her into taking role

A 21-year-old actress, who has worked in the controversial film that allegedly insults Islam, has said the film-maker duped her into taking a starring role, the Daily Mail reported Sunday.

The young actress, Anna Gurji, is now living in fear for her life, the daily said.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula – aka Sam Bacile – has been named by the FBI as the 55-year-old director responsible for “Innocence Of Muslims”.

Nakoula is an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian. Now living in California, he is a convicted drug dealer and conman who was released from jail in June last year.

Police station in Ghaziabad burnt down after Quran’s desecration

Irate community members set fire to a police station in Masuri town of Ghaziabad district Friday night, after a Holy Quran, with its pages splashed with abusive graffiti, was discovered, police said.

The attack on the police station ensued after police allegedly ignored the complaint of the desecration of the holy book.

Bangladeshis protest against anti-Islam film

Thousands of people in Bangladesh Friday staged demonstrations in protest against an anti-Islam film that has triggered anger among Muslims across the world, Xinhua reported.

After the Friday prayers, four Islamic organisations — Islami Oikyo Jote, Islami Oikyo Andolon, Khelafat Andolon and Jamiote Talabaye Arabia — brought out processions in Dhaka.

Angry protesters burned US flags and chanted anti-US slogans. They also demanded the arrest of the filmmaker.

Shobha slams Kiran Kumar and Chandra Babu

6 Year Old Found Hanging in Noida

A 6-year-old girl was allegedly murdered and her brother kidnapped in Harola district.

The girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan of their rented room yesterday and her 4-year-old brother is missing since then, police said today.

In an FIR lodged today, the parents of the children, who were out to work at the time of the incident, alleged that their neighbour was involved in the murder and kidnapping, police said.

The neighbour is absconding and efforts are on to nab him, they said.

The girl’s body has been sent for post mortem, they said.

Court rejects cbi charge -sheet on Jagan

The CBI has received a setback on Thursday when the special court rejected the supplementary charge-sheet it filed against YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in the illegal assets case.

The court, which has rejected the supplementary charge-sheet for the first charge-sheet filed on July 3, said that it was full of mistakes. Faulting the agency for mentioning only the names of companies and not their representatives, the court directed the CBI to file another charge-sheet correcting the mistakes.

TDP leaders condemn attack Jr NTR’s office

The Telugu Desam Party leaders on Thursday condemned the attack on Junior NTR’s office at Film Nagar late last night.

Condemning the attack, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu said that such acts were unacceptable and unjustified. He demanded that people responsible for such heinous acts should be punished and steps should be taken to ensure that such attacks do not recur.

State should apologise to YS Jagan: Jupudi

YSR Congress Party spokesperson Jupudi Prabhakar Rao has demanded an unconditional apology from the State Government for not submitting its report to the High Court and now trying to own up the 26 contentious GOs there by hinting that there was no quid pro quo.

“The State has failed to submit its report to the High Court when the case was first filed which is on record and Chief Minister trying to tell that they have reacted is a blatant lie for which we demand an unconditional apology,” Prabhakar Rao told reporters here on Thursday.

Gowda quits as Karnataka CM

Pinki Pramanik released from jail

After spending 26 days in jail, Asian Games gold medal athlete Pinki Pramanik was Wednesday released from a correctional home in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. Pramanik, who after being accused of being a male had been in judicial custody for alleged rape, was given bail Tuesday.

She had been housed in the Dum Dum Central Correctional Home. Pramanik had been in judicial custody since June 15.

Andhra Cong Govt Not Holding Polls for Fear of Defeat?

Nothing but the fear of defeat is making the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh shy away from holding elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) for several months now.

The term of elected councils in ULBs ended way back in September 2010 while that of PRIs expired in August 2011.

Since then, they are being run by “Special Officers”, with an extension every six months, in total violation of the provisions of Constitution 73 and 74 Amendment Acts.

Iraq shares concern over Syrian issue: Annan

Iraq shares the concern over the Syrian crisis, UN-Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan has said, adding that Baghdad supports his six-point plan and its comprehensive implementation, Xinhua reported.

Annan, who arrived in Baghdad Tuesday on a blitz tour covering Syria and Iran, said here during a press conference that he met Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and both sides agreed over sparing no efforts to stop killings for Syrians’ sake.

He said they also agreed on ensuring that the conflict in Syria should not spill over in its neighbourhood.

Human remains found near Laila Khan’s country villa

Human remains, including three skulls, were found near the country villa of missing Bollywood starlet Laila Khan in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, police said Tuesday.

The human remains were recovered in Igatpuri town, around 130 km from Mumbai, police said.

A team of Crime Branch officers had taken Parvez Tak, a suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist and stepfather of the actress, to the spot where they reconstructed the crime scene following which they found the human remains of three people, an officer said.

US sees no Iranian role in ending Syrian violence

The US has insisted that it sees no role for Iran in ending violence and bloodshed in Syria, Xinhua reported.

“I don’t think anybody with a straight face could argue that Iran has had a positive impact on developments in Syria. That’s our view,” White House spokesperson Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Iowa state.

Iran has opposed any form of foreign intervention in Syria, its close ally, but called on the Syrian government to listen to its people’s demands and carry out reforms.

No Arab spring in Syria, only cross-border terror: Envoy

There was no Arab Spring or revolution in Syria but only “planned and sponsored terror”, the country’s envoy to India said Tuesday.

Talking to women reporters at the India Women Press Corps here, Syrian Ambassador Riad Kamel Abbas also alleged that the US was behind the unrest that has arisen in his nation.

“This is no Arab Spring, it is the winter,” said Abbas.

“Syria is the only country which said no to America on Libya. They are making Syria pay for that. There is no revolution in Syria, it is cross-border terror we are facing,” he said.

Abu Hamza Appeals ECHR Against US Extradition

A radical cleric described as the face of violent extremism in Britain has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights challenging its decision that he can be extradited to the United States to face terror charges.

Abu Hamza, who controlled the Finsbury mosque in London, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment after being convicted in 2006 of inciting hatred. He is also charged with offences relating to hostage taking in Yemen and an alleged plot to set-up a terrorism training camp in the United States.

Warden Arrested for Making Girl Drink Urine

A hostel warden at Visva Bharati University in West Bengal who allegedly forced a young girl student to drink her own urine as a punishment for bedwetting has been arrested and was also suspended.

Uma Poddar, the warden of Karabi Girls’ Hostel at the University in Santiniketan, was granted bail today by a Bolpur court where she was produced along with the girl’s parents, who were arrested on charges of intimidation and trespassing. Manoj Mistry and Poonam Singh too got bail.

Iraq frees Saddam Hussein’s interior minister

Iraqi authorities have released the country’s former interior minister Mohmoud Dhiyab al-Ahmed from prison, according to an official with Ministry of Justice.

“Iraqi authorities released Mohmoud Dhiyab al-Ahmed, who served as interior minister for the former regime, after ending his sentence of seven years in prison,” Xinhua quoted Haidar al-Saadi, spokesperson of the ministry as saying here Monday.

The release came after the authorities confirmed that Al-Ahmed was no more wanted for other cases, Saadi said.

Bihar engineer in Saudi custody: Government to SC

The government Monday told the Supreme Court that Bihar engineer Fasih Mehmood was under the detention of the Saudi Arabian authorities.

Additional Solicitor General Gourab Banerjee told the apex court bench headed by Justice P. Sathasivam that Saudi authorities have informed the CBI June 26 that he was under their detention.

The court directed the government to file a report on the status of Fasih within three weeks. Fasih’s wife Nikhat Parveen had filed an application seeking to know the whereabouts of her husband.
