Markets soar on opening, Sensex up 336 points

Mumbai, June 10: A key index of the Indian equities markets soared at opening bell today, rising more than 332 points within five minutes of trade.

The benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, which opened at 15,168.18 points was ruling at 15,502.63 points, 336.87 points or 2.23 percent higher than Tuesday’s close.

The S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too gained ground, moving up 1.94 percent to rule at 4,639.25 points around the same time.

Naked Madonna & Guy oil painting sells on second attempt in Britain

London, June 10: An oil painting depicting a naked Madonna with her ex-husband Guy Ritchie has sold to a foreign buyer for more than 15,000 pounds (24,300 dollars) after it failed to sell at an earlier auction, it was announced Tuesday. Auction house McTear’s Auctioneers in Glasgow, Scotland, said the painting, Madonna & Guy, by Scottish painter Peter Howson, had sold for a record price.

But the private buyer, who wanted to remain anonymous, had asked for the exact sum to be kept secret.

Tehran, June 10: Iran’s former president, Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, condemned as “lies” Tuesday the corruption accusations levelled against him by incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Suicide Bombing Destroys Pakistan hotel; 14 dead

Islamabad, (Peshawar) June 10: A huge suicide truck bomb ripped through a luxury hotel Tuesday killing 14 people and wounding 52 in Pakistan’s Peshawar city, capital of a northwest province plagued by Taliban violence.

Two foreigners were among the dead in the devastating blast at the five-star Pearl Continental hotel, provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said, but would not reveal the nationalities.

Dhoni refuses to take queries on Sehwag’s fitness

Nottingham, June 10: India’s cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday refused to take any questions from the media on his deputy Virender Sehwag’s fitness.

Sehwag has been ruled out of the World Twenty20 due to an apparent shoulder injury and will return home.

On the eve of the match against Ireland, Dhoni was asked about Sehwag’s fitness and he said: “Whatever is related to fitness, you will get it from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).”

Two more join opposition to women’s quota bill

New Delhi, June 09: After Sharad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav, another Yadav leader, Lalu Prasad, today added his opposition to the women’s reservation bill, terming it as a conspiracy against regional parties to keep their leaders away from power.

Rebel Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh too termed the bill, which proposes to reserve 33 percent seats in parliament and the state legislatures for women, as a conspiracy against regional parties.

Policeman arrested in Kashmir for ‘raping’ minor

Srinagar, June 09: A policeman was arrested Monday for his alleged involvement in the rape of a minor girl in a north Kashmir village, police said.

Nazir Ahmed, a constable of an Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalion, is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in the Poshpora village near Tangmarg, 45 km from here.

Ahmed was a personal security guard of legislator Ghulam Hassan Mir in Tangmarg but was transferred two days ago.

He was taken into custody after protests in Tangmarg, a police officer said.

Hyderabad, June 09: Nadendla Manohar of the ruling Congress party was today unanimously elected as deputy speaker of Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly.

Manohar, son of former chief minister Nadendla Bhaskar Rao, represents Tenali constituency in Guntur district.

Manohar, a two-time legislator, was among the panel speakers in the last assembly and was also chairman of the assembly library committee. He is an economics graduate and did his MBA in marketing.

Since he was the only one to file nomination for the post, the speaker announced his election unopposed.

Hyderabad, June 09: Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone is set to shoot an item number for a Telugu film titled “Love 4 Ever”.

“Deepika has agreed to shoot an item number for the forthcoming venture ‘Love 4 Ever’ from June 24 onwards – her first in Telugu,” a publicist told media.

Starring Ranadeep and Mridula, “Love 4 Ever” is being made in Hindi and Telugu and Jayant C. Paranji is wielding the megaphone for it. Laughing Waters Entertainment is producing the film.
