Policeman arrested in Kashmir for ‘raping’ minor

Srinagar, June 09: A policeman was arrested Monday for his alleged involvement in the rape of a minor girl in a north Kashmir village, police said.

Nazir Ahmed, a constable of an Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalion, is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in the Poshpora village near Tangmarg, 45 km from here.

Ahmed was a personal security guard of legislator Ghulam Hassan Mir in Tangmarg but was transferred two days ago.

He was taken into custody after protests in Tangmarg, a police officer said.

‘We have arrested the accused and an FIR has been lodged by police,’ the officer said.

The grandmother of the victim died Monday morning apparently due to the shock triggering protests in tourist spot Tangmarg.

The incident comes close on the heels of the alleged rape and murder of two women in south Kashmir Shopian, which has triggered valley wide protest for the past one week.
