Sangareddy, March 17: “My husband Kondal Reddy was held in Pune on 11th March and killed in Warangal,” alleged his wife Madhavi Jyothi. “Police tried to kill me also in an `encounter’, but I remained alive approaching the Human Rights Commission,” she said.

After participating in the last rites of her husband in Chittapur, Jyothi spoke to mediapersons.

Kumble is a throrough gentleman: Warne

Bangalore, March 17: They might have been rivals during their international career but Australian legendary spinner Shane Warne today revealed his admiration for Anil Kumble, describing him as a throrough gentleman.

Sharing the dias at the launch of Kumble’s Coffee table book “Wide Angle”, Warne spoke at length about the lanky leg-spinner’s dedication and determination.

“What Anil has achieved and what he has delivered to his fans has been fantastic. Playing against Anil, fortunately or unfortunately, I have found him to be a thorough gentleman, a humble guy,” said Warne.

Fresh row in Andhra over SC order on Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 17: The Supreme Court’s refusal to review its order declaring Hyderabad a “free zone” for recruitments in government jobs triggered a fresh row, with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Wednesday calling an all-party meeting to decide future course of action.

Rosaiah told the state assembly that he had no objection to passing a resolution urging the central government to bring a constitutional amendment to set aside the Supreme Court order.

Congress leader Koneru Ranga Rao dead

Hyderabad, March 17: Senior Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Koneru Ranga Rao died today while undergoing treatment for pneumonia at Apollo Hospital.

Funeral will take place at his native place Gudavalli village in Krishna district tomorrow at 4 p.m. The 74-year old was survived by two sons and two daughters.

Ugadi celebrated with fervour in AP

Hyderabad, March 16: Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety across Andhra Pradesh today.

People enjoyed traditional Ugadi ‘pachadi'(chutney) — a concoction of fresh neem flowers, tamarind juice, fresh jaggery, finely chopped raw mangoes, banana slices, a pinch of salt and chili powder –, a combination of all tastes that symbolises the essence of life to mark the new year named ‘Vikruti’.

Dressed in traditional attire, they visited temples and listened to ‘Pachanga Sravanam’ (narration of almanac) organised at temples and other places.

Mortal remains of Koneru Ranga Rao laid to rest

Vijayawada (AP), March 16: The mortal remains of former Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and senior Congress leader Koneru Ranga Rao were laid to rest at his native village near here today.

Ranga Rao’s body was buried as per Christian traditions at his Gudavalli village after a large number of his supporters and political leaders paid homage.

Congress Rajya Sabha member K Keshav Rao, Vijayawada MP L Rajagopal, ministers D Manikya Vara Prasad, K Partha Sarathi and several others leaders were present.

Postmortem held on Kondal Reddy’s body

Warangal, March 14: Postmortem on the body of top Maoist leader Solipeta Kondal Reddy, who died in an `encounter’ yesterday, was held at MGM Hospital here today.

Reddy, a native of Medak district, died in the `encounter’ in Lavvala forest in Tadwai mandal on Friday morning and his body was shifted to MGM this afternoon, in accordance with the court orders.
Former TRS MLA and Kondal Reddy’s brother Ramalinga Reddy had filed a petition in the Human Rights Court, Warangal, yesterday expressing doubts over the veracity of the encounter.

Over 200 Lambada families who reside in Nerajamulatanda, four km away from the encounter site – Nertikonda were not aware of the encounter as they did not hear sounds of firing or saw large posse of policemen.

Encounter killing of Maoists: AP Police directed to file report

Hyderabad, March 13: The Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission has directed the State police to file a detailed report by March 15 on the killing of two top Maoist leaders, Sakhamuri Appa Rao and Solipeta Kondal Reddy. Acting on a petition filed by the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Union (APCLU), SHRC Chairman B Subhashan Reddy last night directed the Superintendents of Police of Prakasam and Warangal districts to file their report on March 15.

Two Naxal leaders killed in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, March 13: In a major blow to Maoists in Andhra Pradesh, two top leaders including Shakamuri Apparao- facing charges of making attempts on the lives of two former Andhra Pradesh chief ministers- were killed today in separate encounters in Prakasam and Warangal districts.

47-year-old Apparao, a state committee member of the CPI(Maoist), who was allegedly involved in several high-profile cases including bids on the lives of former chief ministers N Chandrababu Naidu and N Janardhan Reddy, was killed in an encounter in Prakasam district.

Joshi likely to head PAC

New Delhi, March 13: The BJP has decided to forward the name of Murli Manohar Joshi to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar for his appointment as the chairman of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) after the term of the incumbent Gopinath Munde comes to an end, sources disclosed here on Friday. Munde was made the chairman of PAC some two months ago when the BJP managed to get Jaswant Singh out of the job. The BJP had made it clear at the time that it would revisit the issue by the end of March.

Two top Maoist leaders killed in AP

Hyderabad, March 12: Maoists suffered a major blow in Andhra Pradesh today when two of its top leaders, one of them allegedly involved in an attempt on the life of former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, were killed in separate encounters.

However, civil rights activists questioned the encounter killing theory of the police and moved the State Human Rights Commission seeking a probe into it.

Andhra Muslim quota hearing on March 22

New Delhi, March 12: The Supreme Court will hear on March 22 whether religion-based reservation has a place in the Constitution.

The court will hear an appeal from the Andhra Pradesh government to scrap a judgment by the high court striking down a new law providing 4% quota for Muslims in educational institutions and jobs.

Cong women in AP demand Bharat Ratna for Sonia

Hyderabad, March 10: Showering praises on Congress president Sonia Gandhi for getting the Women’s Reservation Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha, the Andhra Pradesh Mahila Congress on Wednesday demanded that she be awarded Bharat Ratna for her great service to the Indian women.

“We have faxed our demand to President Pratibha Patil already. We will meet her soon and request her to confer Bharat Ratna on madam Soniaji,” state Mahila Congress president K Ganga Bhavani said here.

She said a resolution has also been passed in this regard by the Congress women’s wing.

SVBC channel serials win 11 Nandi awards

Hyderabad, March 09: Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel (SVBC), owned by the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam (TTD), won Nandi TV awards in 11 categories for the year 2008 and carved out a special place among large number of regional channels. The TTD authorities claimed that the SVBC which is a devotional channel, has set a record of sorts by bagging 11 Nandi awards in the first year of its launch.

Women to the fore in Assembly

Hyderabad, March 09: It was women members to the fore in the State Legislative Assembly today, with Deputy Speaker N Manohar allowing them to speak on the International Women’s Day and on the Women’s Bill placed in Rajya Sabha.

Reacting to interruptions by male members, Seetha Dayakar Reddy of the TDP quipped that had the Bill been introduced five years ago and implemented in the last elections, the men disturbing the speech would not have been there in the Assembly at all.

Navy plane crash: Penthouse, phone tower illegal

Hyderabad, March 09: The top floor and structure for cell phone tower atop a three-storeyed building into which a Navy plane crashed here were constructed “unauthorisedly”, said a report of the committee constituted to probe if the penthouse was “illegal”.

The Kiran MK-II plane, which was part of the ‘Sagar Pawan’ aerobatic team participating in a display at the ‘India Aviation show 2010’, crashed into the building on March 3 at New Bowenpally, about four kms from the Old Begumpet Airport, killing its two pilots and another man on the ground.

Another road mishap in Nalgonda; Twelve die

Nalgonda, March 09: Nalgonda district seems to be in a jinx with another road mishap claiming heavy loss of twelve lives today.
According to eyewitnesses, an auto from Kusumanchi in Nelkondapally mandal, Khammam district collided with a lorry on the outskirts of Mothey mandal headquarters resulting in the instantaneous death of eight persons. Four others died in Suryapet Hospital.

Two more suffering serious injuries are receiving treatment in the same hospital.

‘Govt doesn’t want to bulldoze passage of women’s bill’

New Delhi, March 09: Government today said it would hold a discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha and not bulldoze the passage of the evolutionary measure involving amendment of the Constitution.

“A Constitution amendment bill of this dimension is evolutionary in nature and (the government) does not want to just bulldoze it. It is not just to by-pass a discussion,” Law Minister M Veerappa Moily told reporters here.

2 constables suspended over missing ammunition in AP

Hyderabad, March 08: One hundred bullets and three magazines have been missing from the Mobile Reserve (MR) Office of Rajahmundry and two constable were suspended in this connection in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, police said today.

Rampachodavaram assistant superintendent of police and Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Duggal said that the two constables–Srinivas attached to Addategala and Satyaprasad attached to Mandapeta—were suspended for not handing over the 100 bullets and three magazines to the MR office after completing their duty.

Courts will take 320 years to clear backlog cases

Hyderabad, March 06: Indian judiciary would take 320 years to clear the backlog of 31.28 million cases pending in various courts including High courts in the country, Andhra Pradesh High Court judge Justice V V Rao said on Saturday.

“If one considers the total pendency of cases in the Indian judicial system, every judge in the country will have an average load of about 2,147 cases,” Justice Rao said, while delivering the keynote address on E-Governance in Judiciary.

Film director Teja booked for trespass

Hyderabad, March 06: Cases have been registered against Tollywood director Teja for allegedly trespassing into the house of film producer Chadalavada Srinivasa Rao late last night.

According to the police, producer-cum-distributor, Srinivasa Rao, had bought an independent house belonging to Teja at Plot No.

1065 on Road No. 45 in Jubilee Hills in June 2009 for R 9 crore. He made an initial payment of Rs 3 crore. An agreement was made to this effect and a sale deed executed in favour of Srinivasa Rao. But Rao had been evading payment of the balance amount of Rs 6 crore, police said.

HC stays screening of ‘High School’

Hyderabad, March 06: A division bench of the High Court today stayed the screening of a Telugu film `High School’. The bench made the interim order in a public interest writ petition filed by Sitarama Raju, a social worker from Khammam complaining that the certification of the film thus enabling its release was contrary to the public interest.

The petitioner stated that he had earlier even moved the State Human Rights Commission and the Film Development Corporation.
