BHEL looks at Russia, Kazakhstan, others for market diversification

Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd (BHEL), one of Asia’s largest power equipment majors, is focussing on geographical diversification of its overseas markets which offers a market potential of around 165 GW, the company said.

BHEL is targeting countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Tajikistan that form a part of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and also hold promising investment avenues.

In its annual report for 2013-14, BHEL said: “The addressable markets for BHEL add up to a considerable 165 GW based on the current overseas footprint and presents a huge opportunity.

Looking forward to meeting Modi in Tokyo, says Abe

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Sunday said he was happy that his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi toured the country’s ancient capital Kyoto, and said he was looking forward to meeting him again in Tokyo Monday for delegation-level talks.

Abe made a special gesture to fly down to Kyoto to receive Modi when he reached there.

“Looking forward to seeing PM Modi again in Tokyo tomorrow,” Abe said in a tweet, which was re-tweeted by Modi.

Modi, who arrived in Kyoto Saturday and was received by Abe, Sunday visited the Toji and Kinkaku-ji temples.

Top BJP leaders in Haryana as roadshow ends

Senior BJP leaders, including Home Minister Rajnath Singh, descended at various places in election-bound Haryana Sunday to mark the conclusion of the party’s ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’.

Addressing a rally in Hathin in the state’s Mewat district, Rajnath Singh urged people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party as the party was the only one which could provide a stable and viable alternative to them.

Highlighting the corruption scams and misrule in Haryana under the Congress government in the past decade, he ridiculed the Congress claim that the state was number one in all spheres.

Seven Al Shabaab militants killed in Somalia prison attack

At least seven Al Shabaab militants were killed by security forces after they launched an attack on a high-security prison in the capital Mogadishu, the Somali presidency said Sunday.

“Seven Al Shabaab (militants) were killed in an attack on Godka Jilicow prison in Mogadishu, Somalia,” the Somali presidency said in a tweet, Xinhua reported.

Witnesses said the bodies of seven dead militants lay strewn near the prison while government forces took up positions in and around the area.

Bapu will be severely missed: S.P Balasubrahmanyam

Renowned playback singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam Sunday condoled the death of legendary Telugu filmmaker Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana aka Bapu, and said he will be “severely missed”.

Bapu passed away at his residence following cardiac arrest. He was 80.

Balasubrahmanyam said Telugu alphabets “won’t be the same after the great sculptor’s demise”.

Former cricket captain Alec Stewart has lauded India for their stunning turnaround in ODIs after a 1-3 loss in the Test series and said strong shots, improvisation and not allowing any England bowler to settle has been their formula mixed in with variety in the bowling attack.

India, who lost the Test series 1-3, lead the five-match ODI series 2-0 after three outings. They won the third ODI here Saturday comfortably by six wickets and had beaten England in the second ODI by 133 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method. The first ODI was washed out due to rain.

Two killed in Kashmir road accident

Two people were killed and four others injured Sunday when a car fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior police officer told IANS the driver of a private car coming from Doda town to Bhaderwah (Kishtwar) town lost control in Thanallah Bhad area of Doda district Sunday afternoon and the vehicle fell into a gorge.

“Two people were killed. Four others were injured and shifted to a hospital,” the officer said.

New map to locate missing flight MH370

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has unveiled a new map to locate the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Sunday.

Flight MH370 disappeared March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing after which no trace of the ill-fated aircraft was found despite an extensive search in the southern Indian Ocean.

Clashes continue in Libyan capital

Fierce clashes continued Sunday in Libya’s capital Tripoli as Islamist fighters launched assaults on local militiamen.

Heavy exchange of artillery and rocket-propelled grenades were seen on the coastal road linking Tripoli and Libya’s western town of Zawiya, Xinhua reported.

The Islamist rebel group Libya Dawn is trying to seize some strongholds and key crossroads which were occupied by the local militia group Warshefana.

According to officials, despite the combat zone slowly shifting to suburban areas, the security situation in the capital city has remained rigorous.

Russia, Ukraine swap detained troops at border

Russia has handed over a total of 63 Ukrainian soldiers who crossed the border into Russian last week in exchange for all the Russian paratroopers detained in Ukraine, a paratroop commander said Sunday.

“The negotiations were difficult. But common sense prevailed and everything ended well,” said Alexei Ragozin, deputy commander of the Russian Airborne Forces.

Ragozin said the Russian side had done everything for the soonest release of the servicemen, according to Xinhua.

In a corporate social responsibility initiative, infrastructure conglomerate L&T will build 5,000 toilets, the company announced Sunday.

”A.M. Naik, group executive chairman, announced a major CSR initiative that would add traction to the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ programme recently launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day,” L&T said in a statement here.

Congress to launch Medak by-poll campaign today

The Telangana Congress will launch its campain for the Medak Lok Sabha elections on Monday.

According to the schedule released here on Sunday, the Congress leaders will address public meetings in all seven assembly segments falling under Medak Lok Sabha constituency from September 1 to 4th. Continuing its probe of the multi-crore-rupee Saradha scam, the CBI Sunday grilled Assam singer Sadanand Gogoi and businessman Rajesh Bajaj, who also hails from the northeastern state.

Two killed in Paris building collapse

At least two people were killed in a building collapse in Paris Sunday following an explosion likely due to gas leak, according to media reports.

The four-storey building in the eastern Paris suburb of Rosny-sous-Bois partially collapsed at 8 a.m., killing an eight-year-old child and an old woman, Xinhua reported citing news channel BFMTV.

Ten people were injured, with four being in serious condition, and several others were still under the rubble, it added.
