Punjab govt orders probe into girl’s suicide after humiliation by Jalandhar police

Punjab government today ordered a probe into the suicide of a college student after she was allegedly humiliated in public by traffic police personnel at a ‘Naka’ (check-post).

“Punjab Police lady traffic Inspector Balwinder Kaur, who was heading the check-post, has been placed under suspension with the immediate effect by the Principal Secretary, Home DS Bains,” an official spokesman said here.

Shivali (20), a BA student of Prem Chand Markanda SD College, Jalandhar was allegedly harassed by traffic police personnel yesterday at the Naka.

Big B turns press photographer

This was a rare role reversal for Big B – he borrowed the camera from a press photographer and started clicking pictures of media at the launch of “Kaun Banega Crorepati 6” (KBC).

The megastar played mock KBC with two journalists – one, a young girl from a news channel, and second a photographer from a film magazine, at the event held here Wednesday night.

Amitabh was in a carefree mood. When his second mock contestant turned out to be a photographer, who took to the stage with his technologically advanced camera, the 69-year-old made him face the camera for a change.

Actress Bipasha Basu doesn’t fear being sidelined by the popularity of newcomers because she believes it’s the audience who decides the longivity of an actor.

“The audience’s support helps there. You last for so long because people like you. There is no science, no physics behind it. You can just do good work,” Bipasha told IANS.

Woman delivers while watching comedy film ‘Sudigadu’

A woman delivered a baby in a theatre while watching Telugu comedy “Sudigadu”, starring actor Allari Naresh.

Parimala, who was due to deliver anytime within a week, was watching the matinee show Wednesday in a theatre in Palamaner town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. She suddenly started having labour pains and started screaming.

The theatre management switched off the projector and made arrangements to meet the emergency, leading eventually to the safe arrival of the baby boy.

The theatre authorities and the audience have named the baby Sudi-Naresh.

‘Barfi’ was like dumb charades for me, says Ranbir Kapoor

With no dialogues for him in “Barfi”, actor Ranbir Kapoor Friday said the film was like a game of dumb charades for him.

He plays the role of a deaf-mute person in the film.

“I enjoyed playing this character. There were no dialogues. I used to go on the set, play dumb charades and come back,” Ranbir said at a promotional event here.

The actor said that it was very important for him that the audience was able to relate to his character and this was something which he kept in mind while shooting. He said that his director Anurag Basu gave him a lot of freedom on the set.

Two murders convicts escape from Gurgaon jail

Two murder convicts escaped from the Bhondsi district jail Friday as the jail complex was being cleaned, a police official said.

They were identified as Zile Singh, 27, of Rajasthan’s Alwar and Amit Kumar, 24, of Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar.

As a cleaning exercise was undertaken by a group of prisoners, the duo seized the opportunity to flee, said the official, adding their absence came to light during a counting parade.

A case has been registered against jail officials, the official said.

Ranbir mum on film with Zoya Akhtar

Actor Rambir Kapoor Friday refused to confirm reports that he will be seen opposite Kareena Kapoor in Zoya Akhtar’s next film.

“Nothing has been confirmed as of now. We are very close friends so we keep talking, but nothing is confirmed,” he told reporters at a promotional event of his upcoming film, “Barfi”.

The actor also said that he would love to direct and produce a film under the RK Films banner, but doesn’t have the time at the moment.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who will be seen with his wife Jaya Bachchan in Bhojpuri film “Ganga Devi”, says there is lot of restriction when your wife is on the sets and he gets conscious in her presence.

“When your wife is on the sets with you, then your behaviour also changes, there are lots of restrictions, there is always a discipline on the sets or else when you go back home, the situation goes out of control,” a laughing Amitabh told reporters during the music launch of the film here Friday.

“I hope you all will promote ‘Ganga Devi’ and the audience likes it,” he added.

Mixed response to shutdown call in Andhra Pradesh

The day-long Andhra Pradesh shutdown called by YSR Congress Party Friday to protest the government’s failure in solving the unprecedented power crisis evoked a mixed response.

The shutdown was near total in parts of Rayalaseema region, but partial in Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh regions.

Police arrested a large number of YSR Congress party leaders and activists in and around Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Kadapa, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Kurnool, Anantapur and other places for trying to forcibly close shops and educational institutions and for blocking roads.

MMTS services cancelled partially from Aug 31 to Sept 11

South Central Railway (SCR) imposed a Line Block between 1500 hrs and 1700 hrs from today to September 11 (except on Saturdays) due to track improvement works between Hussain Sagar and Secunderabad / Hyderabad Railway stations. As a result, few MMTS services on Secunderabad-Lingampalli section will be cancelled or short terminated or rescheduled or partially cancelled from August 31 to September 11, SCR said in a release here today.

TDP demands assembly session to discuss people’s problems

Andhra Pradesh’s opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Friday urged the governor to convene a special session of the state assembly to discuss the unprecedented power crisis and the problems faced by people, especially farmers.

A delegation of TDP leaders called on Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum.

Senior TDP leader Ashok Gajapati Raju told reporters that state assembly should be convened immediately to discuss people’s problems. “The government should find a solution to the problem and implement the same,” he said.

YSR Congress Party today claimed that the state bandh called by its party to protest power crisis in the state was big success. Forest Officer convicted in ACB case

The Special Judge for SPE & ACB Cases at Nellore has convicted Dolla Ramanna, Forest Section Officer, Flying Squad, Kadapa, on August 28 in ACB case. The court sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and also to a pay fine of Rs 3,000 under each offence under sections 7 and 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of the PC Act, 1988, ACB, said in a release here today.

Better education for girls will reduce cases of femal foeticide: CM

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said better education for girls would help greatly in reducing the female foeticide and maintaining the ideal sex ratio in state. Addressing a high level review meeting on human development index here, Mr Kumar said the sex ratio in Bihar was 919 female on 1000 men in 2001 which decreased to 916 in 2011. The decreasing sex ratio was the issue of deep concern for the state government and sincere steps were being taken to improve it, he added.

TDP appeals Guv to convene Assembly to discuss public issues

The main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today appealed to Governor E S L Narasimhan to pressurise the State Government to convene Assembly session to discuss problems being faced by the people.
