“No God” film angers Tunisian Islamists

Tunis, July 07: Six months after Tunisia’s uprising, religious tension is rising over the limits of freedom of expression, as Islamists challenge the dominance of liberals in what was once a citadel of Arab secularism.

Last week several dozen men attacked a cinema in Tunis that had advertised a film publicly titled in French ‘Ni Dieu, Ni Maitre’ (No God, No Master) by Tunisian-French director Nadia El-Fani, an outspoken critic of political Islam.

SC paves way for trial in 2008 Guj blast case

New Delhi, July 07: The Supreme Court Wednesday paved the way for trial of over 50 accused in the 2008 Gujarat serial bomb blasts which killed over 56 persons.

A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph rejected the plea of the accused that the trial in the BJP-ruled state could not be held in a free and fair manner owing to the surcharged communal atmosphere in the aftermath of the 2002 Godhra massacre.

All O U exams put-off, no change in schedule for exams beginning from July 12

Hyderabad, July 7: According to the Osmania University Registrar all the exams of Osmania University to be held from July 7 to July 11 have been postponed. However there is no change in schedule for exams beginning from July 12.

The revised date for postponed exams will be announced shortly. The entrance test conducted by Osmania University college of engineering OUS, for admission into part time PG courses engineering which was scheduled on July 9 and 10 has also been postponed due the tension prevailing in the Campus. The dates for these exams will be announced later.

Dawood, LeT on Russia’s list of terror financiers

Moscow, July 07: Russia has identified underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, and Pakistan-based terror outfits LeT, HuJI and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi as financiers of terrorism through money laundering, telling people to exercise caution while entering into financial deals.

The comprehensive list also recognises Jamaat-ud-Dawa, led by Mumbai terror attack accused Hafiz Saeed, as a cover used by Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Terrorists look to implant bombs in humans: US

Washington, July 07: The US government has warned airlines that some terrorists are considering surgically implanting explosives into humans to carry out attacks, a media report said Wednesday.

There is no intelligence pointing to a specific plot, but the information was shared with the domestic and international carriers, the huffingtonpost.com reported.

The Transportation Security Administration said people travelling to the US from overseas may experience additional screening at airports.

Train collides with bus carrying marriage party, over 30 killed

Kanshiramnagar, July 07: More than 30 people have been killed in a train, bus collision in Kanshiramnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

The incident happened at about 2 am this morning when Chhapra Mathura Express collided with a bus carrying a marriage party at an unmanned level crossing.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed grief at the tragic loss of lives in the accident. He has also ordered an ex-gratia relief of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for all those seriously injured.

Iran’s power not ignorable: Italian Sen.

Rome, July 07: A senior Italian senator, Lamberto Dini, has described Iran as a major regional power, saying that the Islamic Republic cannot be disregarded in the international arena.

Kavuri urges Centre to draft policy on smaller states

New Delhi, July 07: Eluru MP Kavuri Sambhasiva Rao on Wednesday urged the Centre to frame a policy on the formation of smaller states in the country, while hailing it for not taking a decision on the mass resignations of leaders from Telangana but instead stressing on the process of consultations.

Talking to media persons after participating in a programme organized at Visalandra Mahasabha, Mr Sambhasiva Rao opined that the Centre should draft a policy on formation of smaller states after consultations with both ruling and Opposition party leaders.

Section 144 extended till July 14

Hyderabad, July 07: Hyderabad Police Commissioner AK Khan on Wednesday announced that the Section 144 imposed in the city will be extended to July 14.

The police had earlier imposed Section till July 7, in view of the bandh call given by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee.

In a notification, Mr Khan said that information has been received by the department that certain groups are trying to create disturbances affecting public peace and order in Hyderabad city.

Who gave KCR, Kodanda authority to demand my resignation: Nagender

Hyderabad, June 07: Questioning the authority of Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao and Telangana Political Joint Action Committee convenor M Kodandaram, Minister for Labour Danam Nagender on Wednesday said that he will not bow down to their demands of resignations.

“They have no moral right to seek my resignation for the cause of Telangana,” Mr Nagender told media persons.

The Minister continued, “Who are they (KCR and Prof Kodandaram) to demand my resignation?”

Announce time frame for T: Kesava Rao to Centre

Gujarat riots panel questions cops on lost records

Gandhinagar, July 06: The Nanavaty-Mehta judicial inquiry commission probing the 2002 Gujarat communal riots Wednesday directed the state intelligence bureau to come clean within 10 days on the destruction of records pertaining to the carnage.

The commission said it would pass appropriate orders after the report is submitted.

The probe panel asked the additional director general of police of the state intelligence bureau to place on record as to which documents were available with it and which were not.

Students-cops clash: OU exam postponed

Hyderabad, July 06: The Osmania University has postponed all the examinations scheduled from tomorrow due to the clash between police and pro-Telangana students in support of their demand for granting statehood to Telangana region

“All the OU exams to be held from July 7-11 are postponed. There will be no change in the exams schedule beginning from July 12. The revised dates of the postponed exams will be announced later,” the Registrar of the University said.

Congress advises Telangana leaders to be patient

New Delhi, July 06: Caught in a bind over demands for carving out a separate state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, the Congress Wednesday called for patience on the “emotive” issue.

“Gerrymandering the state boundaries is an emotive, sensitive issue. The only prescription that works in these circumstance is patience and patience. Given the sensitivity, stay engaged but stay patient,” Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters in response to a volley of questions on the party’s stance towards renewed agitation in Telangana.

Deadlock over Telangana, protests continue

New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 06: The deadlock over Telangana continued Wednesday as Congress leaders returned from New Delhi without an assurance from the central leadership while protests rocked the region on the second day of a 48-hour shutdown.

Despite the resignation of 13 MPs and 100 legislators from the region, the central government said it was not thinking of imposing President’s Rule in Andhra Pradesh.

“There is no move to impose President’s Rule,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram said in New Delhi.
