Top Congress brass discusses Telangana issue

New Delhi, July 06: With the Centre under pressure in the wake of resignations of several MPs, MLAs and ministers from Andhra Pradesh, Congress top brass including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday held consultations on the issue of separate Telangana.

A meeting of Congress core group headed by Gandhi discussed the pros and cons of the contentious issue which has gained momentum in the last two days following resignations of the legislators from Telangana region.

The legislators belonged to Congress, TRS and also TDP.

Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who is in-charge of Congress affairs in Andhra Pradesh was the special invitee at the core group meeting.

Azad had held discussions with representatives of Congress MPs, MLAs and ministers from Telangana who have resigned to press the demand for separate Telengana.

After the core group meeting Prime Minister, Gandhi and political secretary to Congress president Ahmed Patel were closeted for quite some time.

There was no official word over the deliberations.
