RJD leader shot dead, mob violence in Patna

Patna, June 10: Senior RJD leader Pervez Alam was killed and his two brothers were critically wounded on Wednesday by unidentified men who fired at them near Digha area here, triggering protests by angry locals, police said.

The assailants fired at Alam, a contractor, and his two brothers at Banskothi locality this morning. Though the RJD leader was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries there.

Man held for allegedly raping teenage daughter

New Delhi, June 10: A man was arrested here after his 16-year-old daughter alleged that he had been raping her for two and half years at their northwest Delhi home, police said Wednesday.

The police said the victim’s mother took her to the Sultanpuri police station Wednesday afternoon and reported the matter.

After initial investigation, the police registered a case and took the victim to the Sanjay Gandhi hospital where doctors confirmed she had been raped. The man, a former soldier, was then arrested.

Four policemen involved in sex racket suspended

Lucknow, June 10: Four policemen in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district were suspended Wednesday for allegedly running a sex racket from their official quarters, an official said Wednesday.

‘An enquiry has also been initiated against the four constables, who were caught with two call girls Tuesday night at the police residential quarters,’ a district police spokesperson told IANS by phone.

Investigations revealed that Manoj Patel, one of the suspended constables, used to run a prostitution ring with the other three police men, who would solicit clients. Basti is 275 km from here.

74-year-old widow killed at Shivaji Park

Mumbai, June 10: Laxmi Nanji Sangoi was looking forward to August 4 when both her sons were due to fly in from the US for her 75th birthday. Instead, the widow who lived alone was found dead on Tuesday morning in her Shivaji Park flat with her throat slit.

The body was discovered by Bhanuben, the domestic helper employed by Sangoi.

Policemen arrested for raping two women in Kuwait

Kuwait, June 10: Two police officers have been arrested in Kuwait for raping two expatriate women from the Philippines.

The officers were arrested by officials from the Operations Department of the Ministry of Interior after being informed by a Kuwaiti, reported Al Qabas daily, quoting a police source.

Lovers commit suicide

Bhatinda, June 10 : A young pair allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance near Lambi Bus Stand in this district last night, police said today.

The deceased were identified as Joga Singh (26) and Ranjit Kaur (24), who was already married.

The woman had eloped with her lover a week ago. However, both of them had later returned to their homes following persuasion by their families.

Man, son beaten to death by goons

Ahmedabad, June 10: In a shocking incident, a man and his son were killed after they were attacked by four people who were given the contract by a woman at Pandesara in the early hours of Monday morning.

Rambabu Paswan, 40, who had serious injuries to his head died on Monday, while son, Kunal, 15, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
According to sources, Paswan, a resident of Akash Bhumi complex in Pandesara was in a relationship with Rekha alias Asha who is said to be his second wife.

‘Jealous US woman cuts child from friend’s womb’

Washington, June 10: A once-pregnant 21-year-old Oregon woman found dead in a crawl space of a home had been cut open and her baby taken from her womb, investigators said on Monday. It couldn’t be determined if the infant son of Heather Snively died before or after he was removed, police said.

A 27-year-old woman, Korena Roberts, has been charged with murder in Snively’s death. She appeared in court but did not enter a plea. A call to the emergency dispatcher brought emergency workers to Roberts’ house. Workers found blood on the floor and Roberts’ boyfriend trying to revive the infant.

Woman health worker accuses senior colleague of sexual abuse

Vadodara, June 10: A female health worker, Sarjan Parmar (28) from Vajeria village of Tilakwada taluka in Narmada district, has accused the Tilakwada block health officer, Dr Pramod Srivastav, of sexually abusing her. Not just that, Sarjan and her husband have threatened to stage a dharna in front of Narmada district superintendent’s office if the matter is not resolved. Srivastav has denied the allegation.

Sex rackets busted in Mohali

Mohali, June 10: Cracking the whip against flesh trade rackets in Mohali and Lalru, the district police arrested 20 persons on Tuesday. Those arrested including the two kingpins of the rackets, ten women allegedly involved in prostitution and eight alleged customers. The police said the owner of a hotel where the racket flourished and another man managed to escape.

Acting on a tip-off, two police teams were sent to raid a hotel in Lalru and a house in Phase VI, Mohali, Senior Superintendent of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh said.

New Delhi, June 10: A former IIPM student planned and murdered Anand Tiwari, 26, an MBA student at the South Delhi institute, along with two friends on May 25 as he did not like Tiwari’s intimacy with his alleged former girlfriend, the police said on Tuesday.

Rahul Chaddha, 28, who passed out of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) last June, was arrested from Mehrauli on Monday following a tip-off. His co-conspirators — identified as Arjun and Arun — are still on the run, the police said.

Lovebirds commit suicide in Lambi PS

Chandigarh, June 10: Prodded into action by the enraged families of on-the-run lovebirds, cops were shocked into stunned silence on Tuesday when the
detained couple committed suicide inside Lambi police station. Ranjit Kaur, from Baazigar community, and Joga Singh, a Jat Sikh of Punjaba village near Lambi, consumed poison barely hours after they had been detained. While Ranjit died immediately, Joga succumbed in a hospital.

Jealous senior killed MBA student

New Delhi, June 10: A fortnight after the murder of 26-year-old MBA student Anand Tewari, Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a former student of a
management institute for allegedly bludgeoning the victim to death. Accused Rahul Chaddha (28) was detained on Monday night for his alleged involvement in the May 25 murder. Chaddha’s friends Arjun Acharya (27) and Arun Raghav (26), also suspects in the case, are absconding.

Woman held for stabbing ‘abusive’ husband to death

New Delhi, June 09: A young woman has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her “alcoholic and abusive” husband to death in Rohini here.

Sunita alias Neha was arrested on Saturday after she purportedly confessed to the murder to her father Chandoo Lal, who reported the matter to the police.

Policeman arrested in Kashmir for ‘raping’ minor

Srinagar, June 09: A policeman was arrested Monday for his alleged involvement in the rape of a minor girl in a north Kashmir village, police said.

Nazir Ahmed, a constable of an Indian Reserve Police (IRP) battalion, is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in the Poshpora village near Tangmarg, 45 km from here.

Ahmed was a personal security guard of legislator Ghulam Hassan Mir in Tangmarg but was transferred two days ago.

He was taken into custody after protests in Tangmarg, a police officer said.

MCA student ends life after being ragged by seniors

Warangal, June 09: Fed up with the “ragging” by his seniors at an engineering college, a 22-year-old MCA student committed suicide here, police said Tuesday.

Devender Kumar, a second-year student of Vasavi Engineering College, Ibrahimpatnam in Hyderabad, ended his life by jumping before a running train near Dharamaram village here yesterday, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Warangal town, Venkateshwar Rao said.

A suicide note found from Kumar’s pocket said that he was taking the extreme step as he was finding it difficult to put up with the ragging by his seniors, Rao said.

Fresh attack on Indian student in Australia

Melbourne, June 09: A 23-year-old Indian student was beaten up for the second time in a fortnight by a group of youths in Melbourne, the 11th person from the community to be assaulted within a space of a month in Australia.Kamal Jit was found unconscious and bleeding by another Indian student in western suburb of the city on Sunday.

It was the second attack in two weeks on Jit, who was previously pelted with eggs by several masked men after getting off a late night train at St Albans station in western suburb.

Woman burned by relative dies in hospital

Chennai, June 09: A 27-year-old woman, who suffered burns after her husband’s uncle poured hot oil on her last month in Mangadu, died at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Saturday.

According to the police, Nithya married Selvamani 10 years ago and they lived in Ranganathapuram, Mangadu, with their three children. Selvamani’s parents had passed away and his only close relative was Mahalingam, his father’s brother. Both lived in the same compound.

4 students charred to death at teacher’s house

Hyderabad, June 09: Four students died and two others suffered serious burns in a fire at their teacher’s house in Mayapatnam village in U Kothapalli mandal in East Godavari district. Electric short circuit is said to be the reason behind the fire.

While two students died on the spot, two others succumbed to burns at the government general hospital on Monday. Sources said the short circuit caused by loose wiring in a TV set spread to the false ceiling of a wedding pandal in the house where the students and the teacher slept late on Sunday night.

MCA student ends life, parents allege ragging

Hyderabad, June 09: A second-year MCA student committed suicide after he was allegedly ragged by his seniors in the college. The body of D Devender Kumar was found on the railway tracks at Dharmaram in Geesukonda mandal of Warangal district in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased, a native of Choppadandi village in Karimnagar district, was a student of Vasavi engineering college at Ibrahimbagh in Hyderabad.

Forensic report confirms Shopian women were raped

Srinagar, June 08: The Forensic Sciences Laboratory on Sunday confirmed that the two women who died under suspicious circumstances at Shopian had been sexually assaulted before they died.The police have registered a First Information Report under Section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code.

Police sources told The Hindu that the report by the FSL confirmed that Neelofar (22), who was pregnant, and Asiya (17) were sexually assaulted before their death last week. “Spermatozoa detected,” reads the report given by the experts.

Doctor, wife killed in road mishap near Tharad

Palanpur, June 08: Tragedy struck a government doctor’s family when he and his wife were killed in a road accident near Tharad in Banaskantha district on Sunday. Their two daughters were also injured in the mishap that occurred at 8.30 am when their WagonR collided head-on with a jeep coming from the opposite direction near Haripura Patiya, three km from Tharad.
