Lovebirds commit suicide in Lambi PS

Chandigarh, June 10: Prodded into action by the enraged families of on-the-run lovebirds, cops were shocked into stunned silence on Tuesday when the
detained couple committed suicide inside Lambi police station. Ranjit Kaur, from Baazigar community, and Joga Singh, a Jat Sikh of Punjaba village near Lambi, consumed poison barely hours after they had been detained. While Ranjit died immediately, Joga succumbed in a hospital.

Though none of the families had lodged a formal complaint, cops were under pressure from both the communities to hunt down the couple. Ranjit, not yet 20 and three-months pregnant, had been married to a Nahianwala villager a month ago but had she left home along with Joga some days back.

“It’s unfortunate that even the police turned against us, when they should have been more considerate. In fact, we’ve been going around carrying poison with us ever since we left our homes,” the Jat youth, barely into his early 20s, told TOI while being rushed to a hospital. He said they had spent the last few days travelling to places in Bihar and Delhi so as to leave no trail behind.

The youngsters committed suicide at the police station, where panchayat members held hectic parleys to thrash out a compromise between the feuding families.
