Woman burned by relative dies in hospital

Chennai, June 09: A 27-year-old woman, who suffered burns after her husband’s uncle poured hot oil on her last month in Mangadu, died at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Saturday.

According to the police, Nithya married Selvamani 10 years ago and they lived in Ranganathapuram, Mangadu, with their three children. Selvamani’s parents had passed away and his only close relative was Mahalingam, his father’s brother. Both lived in the same compound.

Mahalingam was not on good terms with Selvamani’s family allegedly because of a property dispute. Mahalaingam was apparently not invited for the May 7 marriage of Selvamani’s sister. Assuming that Nithya was behind this, he was furious with her.

In the afternoon on May 15, when Nithya was asleep, Mahalingam sneaked into the house with half a litre of oil. He heated it, carried it into her bedroom and poured it all over her. Nithya was admitted to the KMCH with burns on her chest, stomach and thighs.

A case was registered under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Mahalingam was arrested in in two days. On Saturday, Nithya died in hospital around 9 pm. The police aletred Section 307, under which Mahalingam was booked, to Section 302 (murder) and remanded him in Puzhal prison.
