NHRC notice to Centre, Gujarat over deaths in gas explosion

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday asked the union shipping ministry and the Gujarat government to explain the five deaths in a gas explosion at Alang ship-breaking yard in Gujarat.

At least 10 people were injured in the explosion in a chemical tanker triggered by a suspected gas leak June 28 in Bhavnagar district.

“The NHRC has issued a notice to the secretary, union ministry of shipping, and chief secretary, the government of Gujarat, calling for factual reports within two weeks,” said a statement.

NCC cadets to motivate a lakh people to donate eyes

Having persuaded 2,000 citizens to donate their eyes in recent weeks, National Cadets Corps (NCC) volunteers from West Bengal and Sikkim now aim to motivate 100,000 people to pledge their eyes by NCC Day in November, a top officer said Friday.

“We aim to motivate one lakh persons to pledge their eyes by NCC Day in November,” Additional Director General, NCC (West Bengal &Sikkim), Maj.Gen. Shyam Shrivastava said here.

NCC Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of November. This year the date is Nov 23.

Akali Dal terms Haryana gurdwara bill unconstitutional, illegal

Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal Friday termed the passing of a bill by the Haryana assembly for a separate Sikh board for gurdwaras in the state as “totally unconstitutional” and “illegal”.

Accusing Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of getting the bill passed as a “politically motivated” move, Punjab Education Minister and party spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said “the timing of the bill abundantly speaks of the intension of the Haryana government”.

AP MLAs to get two-day training from July 18

The first training workshop for the newly elected MLAs of Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly will be held on July 18 & 19th.

The workshop, to be held in a private hotel, will be addressed by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, M Venkaiah Naidu and Najma Haptullah, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minsiter Nara Chandrababu Naidu and senior and former bureaucrats including Subhash Kashyap and Vinod Rai. Of 175 members in the Andhra Pradesh, as many as 98 are first time MLAs.

A 24-year-old woman died of burn injuries which she suffered after setting herself ablaze at her residence in Dharmareddy colony of Kukatpally.

Rajnath says Gandhi assassination records safe

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Friday that files related to the January 31, 1948 assassination of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi are safe, and also rubbished a CPI-M allegation that 1.56 lakh official files had been destroyed on the instructions of Prime MInister Narendra Modi.

In a suo-moto statement in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said that only 11,000 files had been destroyed on Prime Minister Modi’s orders.

SDPI calls Railway Budget as disappointing

Two-day orientation programme for AP legislators

A two-day orientation programme would be conducted for legislators in Andhra Pradesh Assembly starting July 18, Speaker K Sivaprasad said here today.

Observing that around 90 of the total 175 MLAs are new, he told reporters that the orientation programme would help them and senior legislators understand legislative practices better.

The orientation programme, which is likely to be attended by senior parliamentarians, is aimed at improving the legislators’ performance, he said.

Panel to decide location of AIIMS in AP

A committee appointed by the Centre to identify a location to set up AIIMS in Andhra Pradesh would visit the state soon, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health and Family Welfare Kamineni Srinivas today said.

Talking to reporters here after a review meeting with all districts medical and health officers from the state and other officials of his ministry, he said that of the Rs 1,000 crore meant for the project, the union government has already sanctioned Rs 120 crore for preliminary work.

End Gaza strikes, UN human rights chief tells Israel

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay Friday warned against Israeli military operations that have killed Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and the indiscriminate firing of rockets from Gaza into Israel.

The high commissioner urged all sides to abide by their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian laws, Xinhua reported.

“Israel, Hamas, and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza have been down this road before, and it has led only to death, destruction, distrust and a painful prolongation of the conflict,” Pillay said.
