Riyadh, July 07: A new study prepared by the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue (KACND) revealed on Monday that 35 percent of Saudis believes that non-Saudi residents do not have difficulties adapting to the local customs and traditions.

The study also showed that 45 percent of Saudis say they treat foreign residents with respect, honesty and fairness.

Patna, July 07: Away from swank colleges and intimidating fee structures, a number of Hindu students in Bihar are lining up at madrassas to pursue higher education, thanks to revamped courses, nominal fees and job opportunities in the Gulf.

“I will complete Alim (equivalent to graduation) degree course from a madrassa. It is affordable and will provide an opportunity to enrich my knowledge,” 19-year-old Sanjay, the son of a Hindu trader in Bettiah district, said.

‘Game over’ for Gaddafi: NATO

Brussels, July 07: NATO says time is running out for Muammar Gaddafi as opposition forces advance, air strikes continue to inflict losses and regime officials flee.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Wednesday the alliance had destroyed 2,700 “legitimate military targets” since the campaign began in March. This includes 600 tanks and artillery pieces and 800 ammunition stores.

Still, Fogh Rasmussen warns that Gaddafi’s forces remain a threat, saying that “without NATO there would be a massacre.”

Powerful quake off New Zealand triggers tsunami

Washington, July 07: A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands, triggering a tsunami in the region, the US Geological Survey and the US Pacific Tsunami Center said on Wednesday.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.9, triggered a tsunami warning for New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands and Tonga, the US Pacific Tsunami Center said.

“Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated. This tsunami may have been destructive along coastlines of the region near the earthquake epicenter,” the US Pacific Tsunami Center said in its warning.

NATO chopper crashes in Afghanistan

Kabul, July 07: A helicopter from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has crashed in eastern Afghanistan one day after an ISAF cargo plane crashed in the same area of the war-ravaged country.

The ISAF Joint Command said the helicopter went down Thursday morning in Parwan Province, Xinhua reported.

“There were no injuries and the crew has been recovered,” ISAF announced.

“What caused the aircraft to crash is under investigation; however, initial reporting indicates there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the incident,” it added.

Pakistani Taliban attack kills up to 38 Afghans

Asad Abad, July 07: Up to 33 police and five civilians were killed in fighting after Taliban crossed over from Pakistan and attacked a remote region in eastern Afghanistan, an official said on Wednesday.

Nuristan Provincial Governor Jamaluddin Badr said about 40 rebels also died in the two days of clashes that followed weeks of tit-for-tat allegations of cross-border attacks that have fanned diplomatic tensions.

But the Interior Ministry contradicted the toll and said 12 policemen had died and another five were wounded.

Hyderabad, July 07: Osmania University campus continued to remain on the boil for the second consecutive day on Wednesday after the rally taken out by the OU students turned violent with protestors pelting stones at the police and para-military forces, who retaliated by lobbing tear gas shells and stun grenades.

About six persons suffered injuries including a media person who was hit with a stone on his face due to which he collapsed and fell unconscious. Trouble started at around 11.30 a.m., when scores of students gathered at the Arts College to take out a rally to Gun Park.

Telangana row: Students pelt stones, netas wait in agony

Hyderabad, July 07: Pro-Telangana students clashed with police at Osmania University campus on Wednesday, the second day of the 48-hour bandh called by Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC).

Trouble started when the police stopped the students from undertaking a protest-march from the campus to Gun Park (Martyrs’ Memorial).

Students hurled stones at the police near the NCC Gate on the campus, and the latter responded by firing teargas shells. “The protesters are forcibly trying to defy the ban orders,” deputy commissioner of police (East Zone) Y Gangadhar said.

‘Muslims can control world’s economy through strategic bottlenecks’

Tehran, July 07: Former IRGC commander said on Wednesday that Muslim countries can dominate the world’s economy through strategic bottlenecks.

Major General Yahya Safavi stated that the Islamic countries are located on both sides of these strategic bottlenecks, which “we call unavoidable passages,” and that their superior geopolitical, geostrategic and geo-economic conditions have provided them with best opportunities.

“About 80 percent of the world’s trade is done through maritime navigation and the ships have to pass through these strategic bottlenecks,” he noted.

Man threatening to kill Obama detained

Washington, July 07: An Oregon man has been arrested to face charges after he threatened to kill US President Barack Obama and the president’s family.

Darryl James Swanson made threats in phone calls to federal prosecutors’ offices in Oregon and Washington, a county government office in Florida, and the Associated Press, prosecutors said.

On May 2, he had called the AP bureau in Seattle, leaving a message that said he would seek weapons to shoot the president and his family.
