Six-year-old Pakistani girl rescued from wedding venue

Islamabad, November 30: A six-year-old Pakistani girl, whose marriage was to be solemnised with her 23-year-old cousin, was rescued from a secret wedding venue by the police. The unsuspecting girl had been assured that she would get many gifts.

The bridegroom Zahid was arrested from the marriage venue in Sheikhupura in Punjab province.

“We received a tip off about the marriage but it took us a while to find the place as the wedding was being conducted in secret,” Express Tribune quoted Bilal Zafar, a police official, as saying.

Declaring the investigations made on Raj Shekhar Reddy’s death in a helicopter incident as nominal, he said he had sent a letter to the central government to carry on high level investigations on the death of his father.

Wiki-releases planned in advance: Iran

Tehran, November 30: Iran’s President has questioned the recent leaked documents obtained and published by the Wikileaks website, saying the US administration “released” material intentionally.

In response to a question by Media on Monday over the whistleblower website’s “leaks,” President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said “let me first correct you. The material was not leaked, but rather released in an organized way.”

Right coalition urges pressure on Israel

Gaza, November 30: A coalition of humanitarian groups has called for international pressure on Israel to lift its siege of the Gaza Strip as the blockade continues to persist.

The group, comprised of 22 development, human rights and peace-building organizations, urges in a Tuesday report for an unconditional and immediate removal of the siege, AFP reported.

Imposed in mid-June 2007, the all-out land, aerial and naval restrictions have been depriving 1.5 million Palestinians in the impoverished territory of food, fuel and other necessities.

Mumbai, November 30: It seems loud-mouthed Dolly Bindra has taken a U-turn after her exit and, since making a second entry in the Bigg Boss house, apologised to Shweta Tiwari for her earlier behaviour.

Dolly was ousted after she had a fight with Shweta and Samir Soni. But the actress, who was known for her vulgar verbal attacks and loud behaviour, has adopted a calm demeanour after her re-entry on the popular Colors’ show.

Seven arrested in kidnapping case in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, November 30: Police claimed to have solved an abduction case with the arrest of seven members of a gang, allegedly led by one Ali Bhai.

Ali Bhai’s brother Rafiq Hussain alias Nihal, a rowdi sheeter with Shaliband police station, along with other accused allegedly abducted Mohammed Naseruddin, a native of Zaheerabad in Medak district, on November 2, they said.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Naseeruddin’s wife, police after a probe, nabbed all seven members of the gang, they added.

Tension in Kanpur on damage of Ambedkar statue

Kanpur, November 30: Tension prevailed in the Kalyanpur area of the city after some miscreants damaged a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar last night.

Police sources here today said the incident occured at a park near Gyansthali in Sector-1 of Awas Vikas colony.

After hearing the incident, people gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the police.

Additional police forces rushed to the spot to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the district authorities are installing a new Ambedkar statue there.

President returns after successful visit to UAE, Syria

New Delhi, November 30: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil arrived here early this morning after a successful nine-day path breaking visit to the West Asian countries of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Syria.

This was the President first visit to the UAE and the first Presidential visit from India to Syria.

Ms Patil held discussions with top leadership of the two countries during her state visit.

‘Hezbollah will win soft war with US’

Gaza, November 30: Hezbollah says it will win any war that the US intends to wage on the resistance movement through the tribunal investigating the assassination of the former Lebanese premier.

The United States is seeking “to speed up” an indictment by the tribunal against the Lebanese resistance movement, senior Hezbollah official Nabil Qaouq said on Monday, the Lebanese portal Naharnet reported.

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was killed along with 20 other people in a massive car bombing in Beirut on February 14, 2005.

Jagan’s new party soon, plans tie up with Chiru

Hyderabad, November 30: Following the resignation of Jaganmohan Reddy from Congress, rumors spread over Andhra Pradesh that Jagan may tie up with actor-turned politician Chiranjeevi’s party Praja Rajyam.

In a dramatic move, son of former Chief Minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy, Jaganmohan resigned from Congress on Monday, Nov 29. His mother Vijayamma also resigned the MLA post.

In an open letter to Sonia Gandhi, Jagan accused that AICC has insulted him repeatedly for last 14 months and he has become a victim of dirty politics from his own party.

CID files charge sheet against Nityananda

Banglore, November 30: The CID today filed a charge sheet against self-styled ‘godman’ Swami Nityananda and four of his associates accused of rape and other charges.

Nityananda, who runs a sprawling ashram near Bidadi in the district, was arrested after he was caught in a sleaze tape episode, wherein he was found in a compromising position with a Tamil actress and was released on bail later.

Mumbai, November 30: Actress Deepika becomes the face of her father, ace badminton player Prakash Padukone’s organisation Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ).

“I am the face of Olympic Gold Quest. I have just come on board. Olympic Gold Quest is training our athletes for the Olympics in 2012,” Deepika told in an interview.

Prakash Padukone launched OGQ a few years back with billiards player Geet Sethi. The negligence of the government towards the athletes made them set up the organisation, which is being funded by corporates and individuals to produce some world-class sportsmen.

Washington, November 30: After sending shock waves across world capitals leaking a quarter million State Department cables, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has threatened to unleash tens of thousands of documents that could “take down a bank or two.”

A fresh “megaleak” will target a “big US bank early next year,” he told Forbes in an interview posted Monday without naming the bank.

“Yes. We have one related to a bank coming up, that’s a megaleak. It’s not as big a scale as the Iraq material, but it’s either tens or hundreds of thousands of documents depending on how you define it.”

US spying on UN leadership: Wikileaks

London, November 29: The US is engaged in a spying campaign against the leadership of the UN, according to leaked diplomatic cables published by Britain’s Guardian newspaper on its blog Sunday.

The blog said a directive issued under Hillary Rodham Clinton’s name last year ordered American diplomats to seek details about both UN communication systems and personal details for top officials.

Quotes from the more than 250,000 cables obtained by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks were circulated to the newspaper as well as other media outlets in the US, Germany, France and Spain.

Gold plating work at Tirumala temple “illegal”: HC

Hyderabad, November 29: A division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court today held that the gold plating work of the sanctum sanctorum of famous Tirumala temple undertaken by the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam (TTD) was “illegal and unconstitutional”.

The bench comprising Justice B Prakasha Rao and Justice Reddy Kantha Rao found fault with the TTD for taking up the project in a hurry and in a whimsical manner.

The TTD had announced Anantha Swarnamaya Pathakam and solicited donations in gold for the scheme.

Chargesheet filed in missing explosives case

Bhilwara (Raj), November 29: A chargesheet was filed today in a local court here against 10 persons, including two noted dealers in explosives, in connection with the disappearance of trucks carrying 600kg of explosives recently, officials said.

Explosives traders Shivcharan Heda and his wife Deepa Heda, Jaikishan Aswani, Mahendra Heda, Rajendra Chaube, Rajendra Jain, Udailal Kabra, Mukesh Sharma, Harji Kal Gujjar and Jagdish Soni have been named in the 63-page chargesheet filed in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bhialwar, officials said.
