Gaza, November 30: Hezbollah says it will win any war that the US intends to wage on the resistance movement through the tribunal investigating the assassination of the former Lebanese premier.
The United States is seeking “to speed up” an indictment by the tribunal against the Lebanese resistance movement, senior Hezbollah official Nabil Qaouq said on Monday, the Lebanese portal Naharnet reported.
Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was killed along with 20 other people in a massive car bombing in Beirut on February 14, 2005.
The Washington-backed United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) was subsequently set up to investigate the assassination. The court is expected to announce its findings by the end of 2010.
Qaouq said that by forcing the indictment, the US wants to start a “new confrontation with the resistance.”
On November 22, leading Lebanese newspaper As-Safir also warned of the ‘intensive’ pressure Washington is exerting under the slogan of “no discussions before an indictment is issued.” The daily called the US pressure a ‘US landmine.’
But the Hezbollah official said the movement would “only emerge victorious” from Washington’s soft war.
In a speech last August, Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah presented evidence proving that Israel had masterminded Hariri’s assassination. The televised address featured a video captured by Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles and recorded confessions by Israeli fifth columnists proving that Tel Aviv was behind the assassination.
“The US only wants to serve Israeli goals in Lebanon as it has no friends in Lebanon and all it wants is to target the resistance and weaken it,” Qaouq added.
