Washington, July 01: When it comes to dental health, an acidic fruit juice like orange is even worse than teeth whitening agents, warns a recent study.

University of Rochester Medical Centre’s YanFang Ren and his team determined that the effects of six percent hydrogen peroxide, the common ingredient in over-the-counter whitening products, are insignificant compared to acidic fruit juices.

For the first time, researchers were able to see extensive surface detail thanks to a new focus-variation vertical scanning microscope.

Ronaldo’s move to Real completed

Washington, July 01: Cristiano Ronaldo’s world-record transfer to Real Madrid from Manchester United has been completed, the Barclays Premier League champions have confirmed.

An “unconditional £80m” fee was agreed between the clubs last month and then came an announcement last Friday that the deal had been finalised and the world player of the year would become a Real Madrid player today.

A statement on www.manutd.com this morning stated the transfer fee has been paid, prompting manager Sir Alex Ferguson to pay tribute to the Portugal winger.

Witness identifies Kasab as gunman who killed brother

Mumbai, July 01: Emotional scenes were witnessed in the court conducting the trial of 26/11 terror attack accused Mohammed Ajmal Kasab on Wednesday, when a witness broke down while identifying him as the gunman who killed his brother.

Bharat Vaghela, who lives in a hut near the Cama Hospital which was one of the sites of the terror attacks, broke down as he said he had seen Kasab killing his brother.

“My brother has small children. Who will look after them?” an emotional Vaghela said.

Gunmen shoot at 7 teens at Detroit bus stop

Detroit, July 01: Two gunmen in a green minivan have opened fire on a group of teenagers waiting at a bus stop near a Detroit school, leaving 7 wounded, 3 of them in critical condition.

The kids had just left Cody Ninth Grade Academy where they had been taking summer classes.

The teenagers, four of whom are boys and three of them girls, are aged from 14 to 17 years old.

The gunmen, who apparently masked their faces with used T-shirts, exited a vehicle and “asked for a person by name” before they “opened fire at the crowd”, said Detroit Public Schools Police Chief Roderick Grimes.

Security situation in Afghanistan deeply worrying: India

Washington, July 01: Concerned over the security situation in Afghanistan, India on Wednedtoday told the UN Security Council that the talks of “reconciliation” requires greater caution and said distinctions like “good” and “bad” Taliban could be seen as reflection of “weakness”.

“The security situation remains deeply worrying. It does not take much foresight to predict that the coming six months will be difficult, most of all, for the Afghan people,” the Indian Ambassador to the UN, Hardeep Puri, said at a special meeting of the Council On Afghanistan.

Mother and daughter missing on mountain

London, July 01: An elderly woman and her daughter have gone missing after setting out to climb England’s highest mountain, police said today.

The women set out for Scafell Pike yesterday morning but had not returned to their campsite by midnight.

A search and rescue team and an RAF helicopter search failed to find them last night.

The pair, who are in their 80s and 50s and from the York area, were accompanied by three black and white collie dogs.

Both women are described as being of slight build and around 5ft.

MLC flexes muscle to get his pound of flesh

Hyderabad, July 01: N Vidyasagar, a Congress Member of Legislative Council (MLC), who represents local bodies from Nalgonda, emulated his more illustrious colleague when he took the law into his own hands on Monday night. Along with 30 of his followers, he forced his way into a realtor’s office near Sushma theatre at Vanasthalipuram and drove away the staff following a dispute with the realtor.

Criminal cases were booked against the MLC by the Cyberabad police who also arrested 13 of his followers.

Protests over water shortage continue in Delhi

New Delhi, July 01: ‘Na bijli, na paani, yeh kaisi rajdhani’ (No power, no water – what kind of a capital is this?) asked angry residents of the national capital as protests continued Wednesday over power cuts and water shortage.

Angry residents of the capital protested the erratic water supply by shouting slogans and breaking earthern pots in the middle of the road.

Complaining that there is no water supply for nearly two weeks and the little that they get is murky, people took to the roads in areas like Dabri, Janakpuri and Durga Park in west Delhi.

Runaway five caught at Visakhapatnam

‘Government harassing my party workers’

Hyderabad, July 01: The Praja Rajyam party president has Chiranjeevi alleged that the Government was harassing his party leaders and workers.

He said that the police were booking cases against party leaders and workers and disturbing their businesses. These incidents took place in Prakasam, Krishna, West Godavari districts and in Tirupati, he explained.
