MPs turn students in meet with Ramadevi

Hyderabad, July 01: The newly-elected members of Parliament should exercise discretion while dealing with the power of Legislature, while ensuring overall uplift for people at the local level.

The message rang clear from ex-Governor of Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, and one time Election Commissioner V S Ramadevi, at a meeting with new MPs at the Osmania University campus. The interaction, organised jointly by the University and the Centre for Political Development saw academics interact and discuss issues with the political players at a session lasting well over two hours.

The turnout of MPs was a bit thin, with Rajaiah Sircilla of Warangal, K Rajagopal Reddy of Bhongir and Killi Krupa Rani from Srikakulam in attendance, along with Economics and Political Science professors from the University. That, however did not deter the assemblage from delving into an engaging discussion with Ramadevi heading the panel. For the first-timers, Ramadevi offered advice on etiquette and mannerisms to be followed while the House was in session. In her anecdotal manner, the veteran in the political arena explained the working of the Parliament, along with the subtle sense of humour that goes behind the proceedings.

The MPs, who, curiously enough represented only the ruling party listened in rapt attention as Ramadevi explained the inner mechanisms of Parliament sessions.

Though Opposition MPs were absent from the panel, the Chair of the panel insisted that all MPs representing the State “should look at larger issues and not busy themselves in petty matters.” She added, saying that “the job of an MP is to tread a fine line between protecting local interests and taking broader issues into consideration.” Chebrolu-born Ramadevi, who also served as the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha in the 90s concluded her talk by advising the newly-elected MPs to enforce the legislative powers invested in Parliament, “and ensure good policy making tactics, arriving out of discussion and debate.” A blend of sophistication, decision- making capabilities and the ability to make oneself heard is the key to the making of a successful career in national politics, she added. As the scholars and politicians alike took notes and clarified doubts, Ramadevi concluded by emphasising on the need for action and positive steps for national development. “Remember that the position calls for great responsibility in a space where individual action can determine the course of the country’s development,” she said.
