32 year Man succumbs to injuries

A 32-year-old man, who was attacked by some unidentified persons, succumbed to the injuries at the Osmania General Hospital.

According to Habeeb Nagar police, the victim, Shaik Ghouse of Vijaya Nagar Colony, was attacked by some unknown persons near Nampally Railway Station who tried to kill him by throwing a boulder on his head on May 30. He was admitted to the OGH where he succumbed on Wednesday.

Police began investigation after registering a case of murder under Section 302, said Inspector R Sanjay. (INN)

30 year old man killed in train accident

A 30-year-old man died on the spot after he was hit by a train while he was trying to cross the railway tracks.

The incident happened on Tuesday evening between Fateh Nagar and Nature Cure stations. The Nampally Railway Police later identified the deceased as E Srinivas, a resident of Ashok Colony of Sanathnagar. (INN)

Two persons commit suicide in different places

A 19-year-old girl committed suicide allegedly due to ill-health.

According to Hayathnagar police, the deceased, U Radhika, took the extreme step by hanging to the ceiling at her residence in Gandicheruvu on Wednesday morning. She was a student and was reportedly unwell for the past few months.

In another case, K Prabhakar, 39, committed suicide by setting himself ablaze allegedly due to domestic disputes. Prabhakar took the extreme step at his residence in Jawaharnagar on Tuesday and died at the Gandhi Hospital later in the night, according to Chikkadpally police. (INN)

‘Need to study link between broilers Chicken and cancer’

(IANS) The Goa chapter of the Indian Medical Association is in talks with the state drug controller for a study which could link consumption of commercially reared chicken called ‘broilers’ to the rise of cancer and hormonal imbalance, a spokesperson of the association said on Wednesday.

“The association had also spoken to state Food and Drugs Authority officials to jointly conduct the survey with seven other government departments,” said IMA spokesperson Sitakant Ghanekar, at a press conference on the occasion of National Doctors Day.

British food authority calls Maggi noodles safe

Britain’s Food Standards Authority (FSA) on Wednesday announced that Nestle India’s Maggi noodles, manufactured in India and exported to Britain, were safe to consume and contained lead well within permissible levels.

“The FSA can confirm that results from testing samples of Maggi noodles in the UK have all found that levels of lead in the product is well within European Union (EU) permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers,” the FSA said on its website.

Obese teens at higher risk of unintended pregnancies

(IANS) Compared to their normal-weight peers, obese adolescents are significantly less likely to use contraception, putting them at higher risk of unintended pregnancies, says a new study.

“Our findings suggest that obesity may be an important factor associated with adolescent women’s sexual behaviour,” said lead author Tammy Chang, assistant professor of family medicine at University of Michigan Medical School in the US.

The researchers measured contraceptive use from a longitudinal study of 900 women ages 18-19 in Michigan.

Women’s face goes reddish during ovulation

IANS) Revealing why men find women’s face more attractive when they are ovulating, an interesting research reveals that redness increases in the faces of females during the peak fertility period but human eyes cannot pick up on it.

“Women do not advertise ovulation but they do seem to leak information about it. Previous studies have shown they are seen more attractive by men when ovulating,” said Dr Hannah Rowland from University of Cambridge.

More men being sexually harassed at workplace: Study

(IANS) If you are a working man, be careful! An increasing number of men are being sexually targeted at the workplace, a recent study warns.

Researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) reviewed 282 complaints lodged over six months, abc.net.au reported.

The study found 78 percent of cases were men harassing female colleagues. Professor Paula McDonald from QUT said 11 percent of the complaints were from men against other men.

She said that figure was higher than expected.

2,000-year-old ritual bath discovered near Jerusalem

IANS) A 2,000-year old ritual bath was discovered near Jerusalem under a living room of a private house, the Israeli Antiquities Authority said in a statement on Wednesday.

The ancient ritual bath, known in Hebrew as a mikve, was discovered amid renovations at a private home in Ein Karem, a village near Jerusalem, and believed to have originated from the period of the Second Temple, which was a Jewish temple situated in Jerusalem between 516 BC and 70 AD, Xinhua news agency reported.

Dec 16 gang rape convicts can’t produce witness in robbery case

Observing that six dates of hearing were adjourned without examining defence witnesses, a court here has closed the right of the December 16, 2012, gang rape convicts to produce further evidence in a robbery case against them.

Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh on Tuesday observed that the last defence witness was examined on January 1. Altogether four defence witnesses were examined in the case.

“For the past six consecutive dates, no witness was brought by the accused in their defence,” the court said.

TDP legislator released on bail in cash-for-vote case

TDP legislator A. Revanth Reddy was on Wednesday released from jail, a month after he was arrested in the cash-for-vote case.

His family, friends and supporters welcomed him as he came out of Cherlapally Jail.

A Large number of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers had gathered outside the jail to receive the legislator.

Though the Hyderabad High Court had granted him bail on Tuesday, he could not be released due to some technical problems. On a petition by Revanth’s lawyer, the court amended the orders.

Obama announces re-establishment of US-Cuba diplomatic ties

The US and Cuba have agreed to formally re-establish diplomatic relations and reopen embassies, US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.

“This is a historic step in our efforts to normalise relations with the Cuban government and people, and begin a new chapter with our neighbours in the Americas,” Obama said at the White House.

He said Secretary of State John Kerry would travel to Havana later this summer to raise the American flag over the US embassy.

ISIS kills 50 soldiers in ‘worst’ attack on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula

Egyptian security officials on Wednesday said the “worst” militant attack in the country’s restive Sinai Peninsula has killed at least 50 soldiers.

According to the Washington Post, Egypt’s Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) affiliate has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The attack targeted at least six checkpoints south of the town of Sheikh Zuweid. The assailants also took soldiers captive and seized several armoured vehicles.

Thousands attend pro-democracy rally in Hong Kong

Tens of thousands of people have attended a pro-democracy rally in Hong Kong marking the completion of 18 years since Britain handed the territory to China.

According to BBC, around 48,000 people have attended the rally but police estimates were far lower at just under 20,000.

The protest was more low-key this year as compared to the rally in 2014, added reports.

In June a Beijing-backed reform package was rejected by Hong Kong legislators.

The demonstrators chanted derogatory slogans against Hong Hong’s Beijing-backed leader CY Leung, demanding his resignation.

The Congress party on Wednesday claimed that the Digital India programme was really launched by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and taken forward several notches by the UPA government during its 10 year rule.

Teenager arrested for raping five-year-old girl in UP

A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a teenage boy at Mahaban town, following which he was arrested, police said.

The incident took place yesterday when the girl had gone to watch TV at accused’s house, police said.

He took her to a nearby place and assaulted her, they added.

The boy has been booked under relevant sections of POSCO Act and the girl has been sent for medical examination, they said.

He would be sent to juvenile jail as he is a minor, police said.

Queen Victoria’s underwear to be sold at auction

A pair of Queen Victoria’s cotton underwear worn by her during the last 10 years of her life are to be sold at an auction in the UK and the 125-year-old apparel is expected to fetch several thousand pounds.

The pants, embroidered with the royal VR (Victoria Regina) monogram, are being sold on behalf of Yesterday’s World museum in Sussex.

“We’ve been able to date the pants by measuring the waistband and they are from the last 10 years of her life,” Auctioneer Richard Edmonds said, referring to the cotton pants with a 114 cm waistband.
