Non-subsidised LPG cylinder price cut by Rs 21; ATF 3%

Price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) was Tuesday cut by Rs 21 per cylinder and that of jet fuel (ATF) by a steep 3 percent on the back of falling international oil rates.

This is the third straight reduction in rates of non- subsidised LPG since July.

A non-subsidised 14.2-kg cooking gas cylinder will now cost Rs 880, down from Rs 901, in Delhi, according to Indian Oil Corp (IOC).

A subsidised LPG cylinder in Delhi costs Rs 414.

Markandey Katju favours uniform civil law

Press Council of India Chairperson Markandey Katju on Tuesday favoured a uniform civil law in the country, saying the Muslim personal law is “unjust” as it treats women as “inferior”.

“Muslim personal law is an unjust law, it is a barbaric, outdated law because it treats women as inferior. Oral talaq is permitted only to men,” he said.

He claimed that even Hindu law was similarly feudal in nature but changes were made in it after “tremendous efforts” by Jawaharlal Nehru.

IPL spot-fixing case: Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel proclaimed offenders

Underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel and one other co-accused were on Tuesday declared as proclaimed offenders by a Delhi court in connection with the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal case.

Additional Sessions Judge Neena Bansal Krishna declared Dawood, Shakeel and Chandigarh-based Sandeep Sharma, who were chargesheeted by the special cell of Delhi police along with suspended cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandela, Ankit Chavan and others in the case, as they are evading arrest in the matter.

According to the Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014, in Asia the billionaire population continued to increase in size and economic significance, with 30 per cent of the net increase in total billionaire wealth coming from the region.

CA student kills self in Ghaziabad

A 26-year-old chartered accountant student allegedly committed suicide in Sahibabad area of the district, police said on Tuesday.

Arvind hanged himself from the ceiling of his room last night in Janak Puri area of Sahibabad, SHO Sahibabad Upendra Yadav said.

Father of the deceased, Kishan Ram, told police that his son went to sleep in his room after having dinner last night.

Today morning, when Kishan went to Arvind’s room he found his body hanging, he said.

BJP cannot fool people all the time: Congress

Accusing the BJP of “marketing” the achievements of the previous UPA regime as its own, Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge today said they cannot fool the people all the time. “One can fool all people some time, some people all time, but one cannot fool all the people all the time,” he said referring to what he called “repackaging” of several UPA schemes by the BJP.

The Jan Dhan Yojana, FDI in insurance and defence were all formulated by the UPA. “We did not believe in marketing and this has been unfairly used against us by the BJP,” he said.

Ebola leaves 3,700 orphans facing homelessness, family rejection

At least 3,700 children in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have lost one or both their parents to the deadly Ebola virus disease which has caused 3,100 deaths in West Africa, according to updated Unicef estimates released Tuesday.

A Unicef official warned that the epidemic has intensified in recent weeks and the number of Ebola orphans could double between now and mid-October.

“We know that the numbers we have are only the tip of the iceberg,” said Dakar Manuel Fontaine, Unicef regional director for West Africa, in a teleconference.

US slaps sanctions on Pakistan-based terror groups

The US Tuesday targeted two terrorist groups based in Pakistan by slapping sanctions on their leader and financial supporters.

The Department of Treasury branded Fazl-ur Rehman Khalil, the leader of Harakat ul-Mujahidin (HuM), and Muhammad Naeem Sheikh and Umair Naeem Sheikh, two alleged financial supporters of Lashkar-e Taiba (LeT), as specially designated global terrorists, Xinhua reported.

Abdul Hameed Shahab-Ud-Din and Nia International, two businesses based in the Pakistani city of Lahore and owned respectively by the two Sheikhs, were blacklisted as well.

PM Modi meets US Defense Secretary Hagel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly met United States Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel here on Tuesday.

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Tuesday his country took the right decision to refraining from toppling the Hamas regime during the recent Gaza war.
