Ten-year-old girl raped in Malda village

A ten-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man in a village of Malda district when she was returning home after attending a wedding in an adjacent village, the police said today.

The victim, daughter of a labourer in Kachiadanga village was returning alone from her grandmother’s place yesterday when she was allegedly raped, Additional Superintendent of police Abhishekh Modi said.

Villagers found her lying in an unconscious state and rushed her to Bulbulchadi Health Centre from where she was referred to Malda Medical College and Hospital

Rains bring down temperature in north India, 3 killed in UP

Light to moderate showers today brought down temperatures in most parts of north India, including in Uttar Pradesh, where three persons died in rain-related incidents.

The national capital experienced a sultry day with a high humidity level of 92 per cent. The day temperature remained well below the 40 degrees Celsius mark.

Following overnight rains, the maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 37.2 degrees, down by nearly two notches from yesterday’s 39 degrees. The minimum temperature was two points below normal at 25.2 degrees Celsius.

Five drown in reservoir during sight-seeing in AP

A sight-seeing trip turned tragic for a group of five persons, including two girls, when they drowned in Dindi reservoir in neighbouring Nalgonda district of Telangana on Monday, police said.

The victims, all relatives, had come down to Dindi to attend the 12th day death rituals of a relative and went to the reservoir for sight-seeing and entered the water for swimming.

However, none of them knew swimming and drowned, a police official attached to Dindi police station said.

Major eviction drive begins in Guwahati to clear water bodies

Following death of 11 persons in last week’s flood in the state capital following heavy rains, the government on Monday started a major eviction drive across the city to clear the wetlands.

Kamrup Metro district administration has been clearing the encroachments on both sides of the Bharalu river, the tributary flowing through the city, since this morning, Assam Commissioner and Secretary (Political) Prateek Hajela said.

Along with this, the administration is demolishing the illegal houses constructed on the Silsako lake in the city, he added.

Yamaha launches upgraded FZ and FZ-S bikes

Japanese two-wheeler maker Yamaha on Monday launched upgraded variants of its 150 CC bikes – FZ and FZ-S – priced up to Rs 78,250 (ex-showroom Delhi).

The company, which had first launched the FZ series in India in 2008, will start selling the two variants – FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0 from Tuesday.

While the new FZ variant is priced at Rs 76,250, the FZ-S version would be retailed at Rs 78,250 (ex-showroom Delhi).

India announces new liberal visa policy for Afghans

India Monday announced a new liberal visa policy for Afghan nationals who will now be allowed to stay in the country on humanitarian grounds for two years.

According to a home ministry release, the new policy further streamlines procedures being implemented in the current visa policy for citizens of Afghanistan. The new policy will be implemented from July 1.

Under the policy, the government may allow Afghan nationals to stay in India on stay visa/resident permit up to two years at a time.

West Bengal was stunned Monday after Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul was caught on a video threatening to gun down his Marxist rivals and “unleash his boys for raping” women. He denied making the comments, saying he had spoken in the heat of the moment.

A Bengali news channel telecast Paul, from Krishnanagar constituency, of warning Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) men to “beware” of him as he won’t “spare them and destroy their entire clan”.

Petrol price hiked by Rs.1.69 a litre, diesel by 50 paise

State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) Monday hiked the petrol price by Rs.1.69 a litre, excluding taxes, effective from midnight, owing to a rise in global oil prices and exchange rates.

Diesel prices were also hiked by 50 paise per litre.

“Due to geo-political unrest in the Middle East, there has been significant increase in international oil prices during the past two weeks”, Indian Oil said here in a release.

Maratha, Muslim quota still not in force: AG to High Court

Maharashtra government today told the Bombay High Court that the cabinet decision on quotas for Marathas and Muslims has not come into force as a government resolution in this regard is yet to be issued.

“In order to provide such a law, a government resolution will have to be issued. Only then such a decision could be implemented,” Advocate General Darius Khambata told the court.

The court was hearing a PIL challenging 16 per cent reservation for Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions in the state.

Eight core industries grow 2.3 percent in May

Eight core industries such as coal, electricity, crude oil, cement and steel, grew 2.3 percent in May this year, compared to 5.9 percent during the corresponding month of last year, official data showed Monday.

The index of eight core industries having a combined weight of 37.90 percent in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-05 stood at 168.7 in the month under review, the ministry of commerce and industry said in a statement.

Cong, TRS cross swords on Telangana council chairman election

Alleging that the ruling TRS is trying to wrest the Telangana Legislative Council chairman’s post through unethical means, Congress today petitioned the Governor to postpone the election to the position.

As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the chairman is to be elected to the council. Deputy chairman of the council in undivided AP state, N Vidyasagar, has been officiating as the chairman, pending election to the post.

The council has now been convened for a meeting on July 2.

World powers should be ” realistic” in nuclear talks with Iran so that results could be achieved, senior Iranian nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi was quoted as saying by media Monday.

Excessive demands of the so-called P5+1 group – the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany – in the talks is a barrier to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement, Araqchi said, adding that it would be an “illusion” to think that Iran might give in to the pressures via-a- vis its nuclear rights.

Iraq army in tug-of-war fights with Sunni militants

Iraqi security forces Monday continued their battle against Sunni militant groups in Salahudin province, as an Al Qaeda offshoot group declared the establishment of an Islamic state in Iraq and Syria.

Earlier in the day, helicopter gunships pounded a neighbourhood in the centre of the city of Baiji, some 200 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, leaving six people dead and up to 13 wounded along with damaging five houses and two shops, a Salahudin provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Delhi gurdwara official held for molesting woman employee

A 54-year-old general manager of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee has been arrested here on charges of molesting a woman employee of the organisation, police said Monday.

Harjeet Singh was arrested a few hours after the woman, in her 30s, filed a police complaint Sunday at the Parliament Street police station.

The woman, who has been working at the Rakabganj gurdwara for a few years, said she was molested by Singh June 21.

“Singh would use abusive language while talking to her and with other employees,” said a police official, quoting the woman’s complaint.
