Rains bring down temperature in north India, 3 killed in UP

Light to moderate showers today brought down temperatures in most parts of north India, including in Uttar Pradesh, where three persons died in rain-related incidents.

The national capital experienced a sultry day with a high humidity level of 92 per cent. The day temperature remained well below the 40 degrees Celsius mark.

Following overnight rains, the maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 37.2 degrees, down by nearly two notches from yesterday’s 39 degrees. The minimum temperature was two points below normal at 25.2 degrees Celsius.

In the past 24 hours till 8:30 in the morning, 5.2-mm rainfall was recorded in the national capital, which led to the rise in humidity level.

Rains and thundershower lashed Uttar Pradesh, killing three persons and injuring eight others in different areas of Barabanki district.

Kusuma Devi (17) and Mukesh (12) were killed and five others sustained injuries when the tin shed and wall of a rice mill collapsed due to thunderstorm in Pipari area of Barabanki yesterday evening, police said.

In a separate incident, 16-year-old Lalla died and three others were injured after being struck by lightning in Tikaitnagar area of the district.

According to the MeT office in Lucknow, the western parts of the state received heavy rainfall since last evening. Meerut received 4-cm of rains, Bareilly 3-cm and Gorakhpur and Najibabad 1-cm each.

Day temperatures, however, rose in Lucknow and remained above normal in Allahabad, Kanpur, Bareilly, Jhansi, Varanasi, Faizabad, Moradabad, Agra and Meerut devisions. Banda sizzled at 42.6 degrees Celsius, the state’s highest.

In Punjab and Haryana, day temperatures settled below normal levels at many places following light rains.

The Union Territory of Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees Celsius.

Amritsar, which received light showers, recorded a high of 37 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures in Ludhiana and Patiala settled at below normal level at 34.7 and 33.6 degrees, respectively, following rains.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 34.2 degrees, one notch below normal, after light rains occurred in the town. Karnal, which was lashed by heavy showers, recorded a high of 33.6 degrees Celsius.
