mUMBAI,nOVEMBER 29:Ever since word about The Dirty Picture started getting around, it was termed as a biopic on late southern siren Silk Smitha. Replete with kitschy clothes, dramatic song sequences and the whole retro works, the film was indeed reminiscent of that time in films when Silk Smitha had reigned and captured the moviegoers’ imagination.

As the Vidya Balan-starrer gears up for release this Friday, director Milan Luthria tells Sonil Dedhia how the film is not just about one iconic item girl from down south but the trend that she was a part of.

Hazare to protest at Jantar Mantar Dec 11

Ralegan Siddhi, November 29: Activist Anna Hazare Tuesday said he will sit on a day-long protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar Dec 11 against the draft Lokpal bill prepared by the government which had ‘cheated’ the people.

He also warned of a major agitation starting Dec 27 at Delhi’s Ramlila ground if changes were not made to the proposed anti-graft law.

‘I will sit on a day-long protest on Dec 11 at Jantar Mantar and I urge everybody to agitate and take to the roads peacefully for a day,’ Hazare told reporters here.

2.9 cr farmers benefitted from loan waiver scheme

New Delhi, November 29: More than 2.9 crore farmers have benefitted from loan waiver scheme so far, for which the government has released Rs 52,419 crore, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

A total of 1.04 crore farmers have been benefitted under the scheme from public sector banks, private banks and local areas banks, and 1.89 crore in respect of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and Cooperative Banks, Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

Cop strips, assaults woman

New Delhi, November 29: The men in khaki simply refuse to change their rogue ways. In yet another instance of the police using their position to harass people, a constable stripped and beat up a woman in the Mehrauli area.

Constable Raj Kumar and his goons barged into the house of Sushma (name changed), wife of a LPG cylinder supplier, in Chhatarpur Extension and assaulted her and her three children.

Their only crime was that they had taken water from a public pump on which Raj Kumar claimed his exclusive right.

Saif, Kareena to marry early next year: Soha

Mumbai, November 29: What seemed to be a speculation sometimes back has been confirmed now.

The much acclaimed couple of Bollywood, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, will tie the knot in March next year.

The actor’s sister, Soha Ali Khan, happened to incidentally reveal the news to the paparazzi when she was in the Capital recently to walk the ramp for the Blender’s Pride Tour.

In the past, Saif had announced that the couple would marry early next year in 2012 but month and the date were never confirmed.

US-led forces kill 5 Afghan civilians

Kabul, November 29: NATO helicopters on Monday fired four rockets into houses in Zhari district of Kandahar, killing three women and injuring two men, said Zalmai Ayoubi, the provincial governor’s spokesman, on Tuesday.

The Afghan official added that the US-led alliance had confirmed the attack.

Nine civilians, most of them children, were also killed in the same district during a NATO airstrike last week.

In another attack on Tuesday, US-led forces raided a house in Surkh Rod district of the Nangarhar province and killed two brothers.

Officials are humiliating me: Minister Shankar Rao

Hyderabad, Nov 29 (INN): Handlooms and Textiles Minister Dr P Shankar Rao alleged that he was repeatedly being subjected to humiliation by the officials at the instance of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Rains unabated in Nellore, Chittoor

Nellore, November 29: Heavy rains continued to lash Chittoor and Nellore districts on Monday affecting normal life in both the districts. Under the influence of northeast monsoon and the cyclone brewing up in the Arabian Sea, both the districts received copious rainfall and in some places irrigation tanks have breached.
