3 held for planning robberies in city

Hyderabad, October 31: Three persons, including two from Uttar Pradesh who planned to commit robberies in the city were nabbed.

A country-made pistol with 12 live rounds of ammunition, a toy pistol and a sword were recovered.

The two persons from Uttar Pradesh had come to Hyderabad less than a week back and were taking shelter at another accused’s house at Chandrayangutta.

The duo are 22-year-old Md Jaweed alias Jaber of Bareilly district and 18-year-old Ashraf Saha alias Sajid of Badaun district.

Gadar to create ‘political force’

Indo-Pak secretary level talks in November

New Delhi, October 31: India will again press for normalisation of trade with Pakistan when Commerce Secretaries of the two neighbouring countries meet here in the second week of November.

The Commerce Secretary-level talks are being held within two months of India-Pakistan trade ministers meeting, which reviewed the bilateral commercial engagement. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma had hosted his Pakistani counterpart Makhdoom Amin Fahim in September.

Woman raped as hubby held at knifepoint

Mumbai, October 31: Two youths gang-raped a female labourer, while her husband was held at knifepoint outside their hut in Ulwe near Belapur on Saturday.

NRI police arrested one of the accused, Pratap Narhari Patil , also a resident of Ulwe. The victim’s husband said that two men in their 20s barged into their hut and threatened him with a knife.

They then raped his wife and fled. Based on the husband’s description, the cops were able to nab Patil.

Woman came for Haj, delivers baby boy at Jeddah Airport

Jeddah, October 31: A 42-year-old Chadian woman going for the annual Muslim (Haj) pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia gave birth to a baby boy just after her flight landed in the Gulf kingdom, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

The pregnant woman just left the aircraft and went into the lounge at the airport in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah when she went into labour.

Electronic media demonising the Muslims:Katju

New Delhi, October 31: Press Council chairman Markandey Katju has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh suggesting that the electronic media should be brought under its purview and should be given “more teeth”.

“I have written to the PM that the electronic media should be brought under Press Council and it should be called Media Council and we should be given more teeth. Those teeth would be used in extreme situations,” Katju told a news channel.

Katju said that he had received a letter from the Prime Minister that his letter had been received and “they are considering it”.

Syria’s Assad warns of ‘earthquake’ for West

Beirut, October 31: Western powers risk causing an “earthquake” across the Middle East if they intervene in Syria, President Bashar al-Assad said, after protesters called for foreign protection from a crackdown in which 3,000 people have been killed.

Assad’s warning came ahead of Syrian government talks on Sunday with the Arab League aimed at starting a dialogue between the government and opposition and ending violence which has escalated across Syria in recent days.

Mumbai, October 31: Schoolchildren in Maharashtra have played a significant role in making Diwali brighter for the underprivileged in the state. Students from 13 districts in the state saved up to Rs5 crore by adhering to their pledge of not firing crackers. The money will be donated for social causes.

On October 17, DNA reported about a cracker-free Diwali campaign undertaken by the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (MANS).

Students were asked not to fire crackers and instead donate that money for social causes.

World’s 7th bn baby likely to be born in UP today

Lucknow, October 31: Somewhere in Uttar Pradesh – Allahabad would be a good bet – a pregnant woman is carrying a baby destined to be the planet’s seven billionth human being.

The historic baby is due to be born on Monday (October 31), the United Nations Population Fund predicts. Experts have made Uttar Pradesh (UP) the hot favourite for the symbolic arrival, possibly for no better reason than that the state has the highest population in the country with 19.95 crore people, giving its mothers a head-start.

Strong quake strikes off Taiwan

Taipei, October 31: A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off northeast Taiwan on Sunday, Taiwanese seismologists said, swaying buildings in the capital but there were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings.

The US Geological Survey however measured the quake at a much weaker 5.5.

The undersea quake hit at 11:23 local time (0323 GMT) about 141.4 kilometres (84 miles) east of the northern city of Keelung at a depth of 221.4 kilometres, the Seismology Centre said.

UP, Bihar – 2 most crime prone states

New Delhi, October 31: Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have earned the dubious distinction of two most crime prone states, accounting for more than 7,800 lives lost in violent crimes in 2010.

According to the government statistics, a total of 33,908 people across India were killed in different violent crimes and a substantial number — 15,787 — of them were youth belonging to the age group of 18 to 30 years.

The number of casualties in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar stood at 4,456 and 3,362 respectively.

96-year-old man to go on hunger strike for Telangana

Hyderabad, October 31: His struggle for a separate Telangana state may have stretched several decades now but 96-year-old Acharya Konda Lakshman Bapuji remains undaunted as as he goes on a seven-day hunger strike in the capital from November 1.

Announcing his decision to go on a satyagraha here today, Bapuji, a 1969 pro-Telangana agitation leader, warned that he would organise a mass agitation in the region if the Centre does not initiate the statehood process by the end of his strike.

Team Anna should stand united: Ramdev

New Delhi, October 31: Team Anna members should refrain from “levelling charges” against each other and not let anything fracture their unity, yoga guru Ramdev said on Sunday.

“They should not indulge in levelling charges against each other and they must keep away from any controversial act because the government has one motto — to defame all those who speak against it,” Ramdev said in Ghaziabad.

His statement comes against the backdrop of growing clamour for revamp in the Team Anna’s core committee after key member Kumar Vishwas shot off a letter to Hazare demanding its suspension.

Yuvraj, who watched the 60-lap race with fellow cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar, said he fell in love with the sound of the engines and did not get bored one bit while watching the race that Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won.

Man arrested for murder after 18 years

New Delhi, October 31: A man, who had been absconding in a murder case for the last 18 years has been finally arrested, police said Sunday. He was 19 at the time of the crime.

Sanjay, 37 was arrested from east Delhi’s Seemapuri area Saturday on a tip off.

“He had murdered a man — Haroon Viopari — on April 23, 1993 suspecting that he had stolen from his scrap shop in Nandnagri (east Delhi),” said an official.

“Sanjay along with his brother, Jagdish and father Chander Bhan had beaten Viopari with iron rods. Viopari later succumbed to his injuries,” added the official.

Drunk, naked Moscow driver smashes 17 cars

Moscow, October 31: A drunk and naked driver lost control during driving in Moscow and smashed 17 cars, including four police vehicles, police said Sunday.

The unnamed man, who was drunk and driving a Renault Megan car, lost control of the vehicle when police chased him after he did not respond to their demand to stop.

A police spokesman said that police finally managed to stop him without using firearms. When the man was pulled out of the car, it turned out that he was naked and heavily drunk.

CM assures strict action against girls’ murderers

Hyderabad, October 30: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday expressed anguish at the gruesome murder of two young girls – Swati (24) from Mallikuduru village of Dharmasagar Mandal of Warangal District and Rafia (17) from Snehapuri Colony of Kamareddy in Nizamabad district, by two youths.

Expressing concern over such incidents, the Chief Minister said that stringent action would be taken against the culprits. He said youths should not resort to such heinous crimes and instead concentrate on building their future. (INN)
