Dubai Police foil bid to smuggle 57kg heroin

Dubai, June 07: The Dubai Police have foiled an attempt to smuggle 57kg of heroin worth Dh4.5 million to an African country and further to some European countries.

The police arrested two Africans and an Asian, and are chasing two Asians who fled the country before the police seized the contraband in March this year. Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, said that the suspects used a unique technique to smuggle the drugs from an Asian country. The heroin was hidden in 2,565 orange cartons and placed in containers in one of the UAE ports.

UAE couple kisses in public, arrested

Abu Dhabi, June 07: An Abu Dhabi appeals court is trying an Arab man and a Russian woman accused of kissing each other in a public place in violation of local social traditions, press reports said on Tuesday.

A court in the capital earlier sentenced the man for a suspended one year imprisonment, prompting him to appeal the verdict on the grounds the girl was his fiancée and that they got married later.

The unnamed man confessed to kissing the Russian woman in a public place in the capital but denied it was in an “obscene” way, Emarat Al Youm daily said.

603 Passports of pilgrims received, 165 applications pending

Hyderabad, June 07: Out of 2442 only 603 passports of the Haj Pilgrims have been received by Haj Committee. Mr. Syed Khaleeluddin Ahmed is actively pursuing the cases with passport officer.

He along with Mr. Raza Hussain Azad, Mr. Mohammed Baig & Executive offier Mr. Mahboob Peeran met the passport officer and made enquires. Still 1834 applications are under consideration, out of which 913 are in the final stage of disposal. It was given to understand that within a week 923 applications remain pending for want of police verification.

Woman murdered, roasted and eaten up!

Ranchi, June 7: A woman, accused of practising black magic, was killed and her body cut up, roasted and eaten by her murderers in Jharkhand’s Gumla district, police said Tuesday.

The woman, a widow identified as Aitwari Devi, 45, was killed at Nawgai village of Gumla district, around 140 Km from Ranchi, early Monday, the police said.

After she was killed, her body was cut into pieces by the assailants who later made a meal of it after roasting it.

The incident came to the notice of the police Monday evening when Aitwari’s son, Avadh Nayak, 16, informed them.

Haj Pilgrims training camp

Coaching for Civil Services in Urdu University

Hyderabad, June 07: Civil Services Coaching Academy of Urdu University offers coaching for civil services and other competitive examinations for Minorities.

According to Prof-Amina Kishore, a four month coaching programmer is being offered for Civil Services.

There is a reservation of 40% seats for girls. 20% students will get a stipend of Rs. 2000 per month based on merit. Coaching will start on 11th July. Anna Hazare to sit on day-long fast at Jantar Mantar tomorrow

New Delhi, June 07: Anna Hazare and his supporters will sit on a day-long fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday to protest against police action on Baba Ramdev and have threatened to defy prohibitory orders if police refuse to give permission.

Close aides of Hazare said preparations were in full swing for the “very peaceful” protest from 10 am to 7 pm at the dharna hotspot of the capital. An all-religion prayer meeting and a debate on Lokpal Bill are also being organised during the fast.

Bahrain medical staff ‘tortured for confessions’

Bahrain, June 07: Doctors and nurses put on trial in Bahrain yesterday told relatives they were beaten with hoses and wooden boards embedded with nails and made to eat faeces. They also had to stand without moving for hours, or even days, and were deprived of sleep in order to force them to sign false confessions.

Muslim’s shoes found with PORK

Bristol, June 07: A racist thug stuffed ham into the shoes of Muslims who were praying in a mosque on January 9. The 30-year-old man also draped slices of the meat – which is banned for Muslims – on railings outside the Al Baseera mosque in the St Judes area of Bristol, UK.

4 youngsters stripped, killed in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 07: The partially charred bodies of four men in their twenties were found atop a hillock in Kurar and Malad on Monday morning. They had been missing since Saturday night after allegedly getting into a scuffle with a local gang.

More than 10 men have been named as accused in the case, some have been detained, though the police are still to make any arrests.

Lokpal will be drafted, with or without Anna

New Delhi, June 07: In a stern message to the Team Anna who boycotted the joint drafting committee meeting yesterday, the government said that it will go ahead with the drafting of the bill wether the civil society join or not.

However, it invited the civil society members to the next meeting to be held at June 15.

It also underlined to the Hazare camp that its involvement in the drafting exercise was being seen as undermining of the “supremacy of the Constitution” by other political parties.

Canines turn worst enemies of Hyderabad residents

Hyderabad, June 07: Dog, it is said, is man’s best friend. But in the case of Hyderabad and several other districts of Andhra Pradesh, the canines are turning out to be the worst enemies if one were to go by the alarming number of stray dog attacks and consequent death due to rabies.

In the past one month alone, at least 18 persons, including some children, have died due to rabies in the state, which reportedly has a stray population of 20 lakh including three lakh in the capital alone.

Fatwa body bans mingling of sexes

Jeddah, June 07: The permanent committee for issuing religious edicts, chaired by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, has banned the mingling of men and women at offices and educational institutions.

“Women are not allowed to work with men. For example, they cannot work as secretaries for men or at receptions, production lines or accounting sections in a commercial center, pharmacy or restaurant where men are also present,” the ruling said.

First Visual of Rana’s interrogation released

Chicago, June 07: The prosecution and the defence rested on Monday in the Mumbai terror trial after jurors were shown the videotaped interrogation of Pakistan-born Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, who is accused of helping the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the 26/11 attack.

Roughly 10 minutes of the video was played in Chicago Federal court. Rana, who had waived his Miranda Rights to remain silent, spoke quietly and calmly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and without his attorney present, ABC News reported.

I’ve forgiven government: Ramdev

Hardwar, June 07: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who is continuing his fast against corruption here, Tuesday said he had forgiven the government for the action against him and his supporters at Ramlila ground in Delhi. But he said police could try to destroy evidence of the “hooliganism”.

“The atrocities on me and thousands of my followers, the conspiracy of my murder they made, I have personally forgiven them,” Ramdev told reporters in Hardwar, two days after he was evicted from the capital.
