Woman mixed poison in kids’ drink before committing suicide

Hyderabad, January 01: A 35-year-old woman who was under depression due to financial problems committed suicide by hanging herself after giving poison-laced soft-drink to her three children, police said.

One of the children died while two others are out of danger, they said.

According to Neredmet Police, Jyothi, who was working as a clerk in a private school resorted to the extreme step as she was reportedly facing financial problems following the death of her husband about seven months ago.

Karzai rejected U.S. request to replace minister

Kabul, January 01: Afghan President Hamid Karzai refused to remove a former warlord from atop the Energy and Water Ministry despite U.S. pressure to oust the minister because they considered him corrupt and ineffective.

Secret diplomatic records showed the minister, privately termed “the worst” by U.S. officials, kept his perch at an agency that controls $2 billion in U.S. and allied projects.

The refusal to remove the official despite threats to end U.S. aid highlights how little influence the U.S. has over the Afghan leader on pressing issues such as corruption.

Hyderabad, January 01: Ahead of the meeting of eight recognised political parties convened by the Centre to discuss the Srikrishna Committee report and the way forward, TRS tonight said anything short of statehood for Telangana will not be acceptable to it.

“We make it abundantly clear to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that we will not accept anything short of Telangana (statehood),” TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao said at a meeting of Telangana Gazetted and Non-Gazetted Officers associations here.

Prime Suspect Found In Aarushi Murder Case, says CBI

New Delhi, January 01: The CBI has told court that Dr Rajesh Talwar remains the prime suspect in the murder of his daughter Aarushi and their servant Hemraj, but cannot be chargesheeted because of”insufficient evidence”.

In its closure report submitted to the Ghaziabad court, the agency has catalogued circumstantial evidence strongly pointing to Dr Talwar’s alleged role in the double murder, as also the reason why the agency failed to connect the dots and could not have chargesheeted him.

Headley was a Pakistani spy working for ISI, says report

Washington, January 01: LeT operative David Headley, who scouted targets in Mumbai for 26/11 attacks, was a Pakistani spy working for ISI, whose chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha was possibly aware of the plot to strike India’s financial hub, claims an investigative news report.

“In essence, US and Indian officials say, Headley was more than a terrorist: He served as a Pakistani spy,” investigative American journalist Sebastian Rotella wrote in ‘ProPublica.Com’.

Afridi not doing well as captain in NZ, says Akram

Karachi, January 01: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram feels that Shahid Afridi’s leadership in the ongoing New Zealand tour has not been up to the mark and the players were also not performing to their abilities.

Akram told a television channel that Pakistan lost the Twenty20 series in New Zealand because the players were not playing as a unit and if they continue like this it will be difficult to make an impact in World Cup starting next month.

“Because the team is not playing as one they are facing many problems and their performances are suffering,” he said.

Wikileaks: Iran denies the report

Tehran, January 01: Iran has denied a WikiLeaks report that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was slapped by the chief of the country’s Revolutionary Guards, the Tehran press reported Saturday.

According to a leaked US diplomatic cable, General Mohammad-Ali Jafari slapped Ahmadinejad in early 2010, as Tehran was still dealing with the fallout from a disputed election.

A Revolutionary Guards spokesman told Fars news agency that “those behind WikiLeaks have availed themselves of the fame they gained through their insider information and invent false stories”.

A guy named Gaurav has been sending sexually offensive tweets to Sherlyn lately. In one tweet he wrote: “Hey Sherlyn…did you split or you swallow?”

To which Sherlyn replied: “I save it up for as****es and mother f*****$ like you. Merry Christmas.”

But the guy still did not relent. He posted: “At least you admitted that you s**** d***$”.

Sherlyn has now ceased to reply to his tweets.

Honour sought for Malaysian Indian football coach

Kuala Lumpur, January 01: Malaysia’s national football coach, K. Rajagopal, under whom the country won the AFF Suzuki Cup, should be honoured with Datukship, the traditional knighthood, the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) has urged.

Under Rajagopal, the country won the recent SEA Games in Laos and on Wednesday clinched the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time by beating Indonesia, MIC president G. Palanivel told Tamil Nesan, the Tamil language daily.

Palanivel said Malaysian football has been on the rise since Rajagopal took charge of the national under-23 side.

KU SJAC block Ponnala’s convoy, demand withdrawal of forces

Warangal, January 1: Demanding withdrawal of Central Paramilitary Forces from the Telangana region, activists of the Students Joint Action Committee of Kakatiya University on Friday obstructed the convoy of Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Lakshmaiah at Aswaraopalli in Raghunathapalli mandal in the district.

Raising slogans against the State government and Centre, the students demanded that the government withdraw forces immediately from the Telangana region. The students also warned the government of serious consequences if it did not withdraw the forces immediately.

U.S. missiles kill 14 in north-west Pakistan

Islamabad, January 01: Two U.S. missile strikes about two hours apart killed at least 14 men near the Afghan border in northwest Pakistan on Saturday, two Pakistani intelligence officials said.

At least nine people were killed in the first strike when missiles destroyed a moving vehicle in the Spin Wam area of the North Waziristan tribal region, the officials said.

Two hours later drones fired more missiles at people who had gathered to retrieve the bodies, killing five, they said.

Rich haul of explosives seized from quarry

Kadapa, January 1: Porumamilla policemen on Friday arrested one person and seized large cache of explosives from a quarry at Mamidipalli village, Kalasapasu mandal in the district.

According to Inspector S Vijay, the haul of explosives, including 15 bags of ammonium nitrite weighing about 750 kilo grams, 1076 detonators, 970 gelatin steaks, 350 metre of fuse wire and a battery were seized from the quarry.

The police had conducted the raid on the quarry after being tipped-off.

Girl kidnapped, relative suspected

Hyderabad, January 1: An eighth standard girl student was allegedly kidnapped by her close relatives under the Sultan Bazar police station limits.

According to Inspector Gangadhar, the victim has been identified as Nithisha (14), daughter of Santosh Dass, a resident of Gujarati Galli. She was studying in eighth standard in Gujarati Vidya Mandir School.

After attending the school on Friday morning, she did not return.

Inter-Religion Marriage Not Valid Under HMA: HC

New Delhi, January 01: The marriage between a Hindu and a non-Hindu solemnised as per the Hindu rites is neither valid nor the parties can claim any benefits under the Hindu Marriage Act (HMA), the Delhi High Court has ruled.

The High Court also held that “mere theoretical allegiance” to Hinduism would not make one a Hindu unless he or she had actually converted to the religion.
