Thousands rally in Pakistan in support of blasphemy law

Islamabad, January 01: Businesses shut down and buses stayed off the streets in many parts of Pakistan on Friday as thousands rallied against changing the country’s controversial laws against blasphemy. In one major city, police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators who pelted them with stones.

Pakistan’s long-standing law against blasphemy gained new attention this year when a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, was sentenced to death in November for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

CM appeals not to bring bouquets and gifts

Two killed, four hurt as Scorpio hits tree

Hyderabad, January 1: Two persons were killed on the spot when a Scorpio proceeding towards ECIL on high speed dashed against a tree near Kushaiguda Friday morning.

While two persons were killed on the spot, four others suffered grievous injuries. They were rushed to the Gandhi Hospital at Secunderabad.

The accident-hit Scorpio is believed to be belonging to an MLA of Guntur district. The police have confirmed that one of the deceased Gandhi has been working as a driver for the MLA.

New Delhi, January 01: A fortnight after Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi, the ruling party MLA from Naraini in Banda district, got a Dalit minor Neelu Nishad (name changed) jailed allegedly on a cooked up charge of theft, the BSP sacked him from the post of party coordinator on Friday. The Banda police, which had sent Neelu to jail when she approached them with a complaint that she had been raped by the legislator, also swung into action getting the girl medically examined.

Marriage between a Hindu and non-Hindu under HMA not valid: HC

New Delhi, January 01: The marriage between a Hindu and a non-Hindu solemnised as per the Hindu rites is neither valid nor the parties can claim any benefits under the Hindu Marriage Act (HMA), the Delhi High Court has ruled.

The High Court also held that “mere theoretical allegiance” to Hinduism would not make one a Hindu unless he or she had actually converted to the religion.

New Delhi, January 01: Seeking a “new beginning” in the year ahead, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday night asked people to believe in the resilience of democracy and its capacity to deal with infirmities through course correction.

Aarushi’s parents tried to influence doctors: CBI

New Delhi: The sensational Aarushi murder case took a new twist on Friday with CBI raising doubts over the role of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar alleging they had tried to influence the doctor who conducted the post mortem on their 14-year-old daughter in 2008, a charge rubbished by the dentist couple.

In its 30-page closure report submitted to a Ghaziabad court on December 29, the CBI said that Rajesh and Nupur had Aarushi’s room washed up after asking the UP Police to rush to the railway station to nab their domestic help — Hemraj — on May 16th morning.

ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa released from jail

Guwahati, January 01: Arabinda Rajkhowa, chairman of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), released from the Guwahati Central Jail to facilitate peace talks between the Government and top ULFA cadres.

Rajkhowa, who was on Thursday granted bail by a special TADA court, said unconditional peace talks but wants the outfit to stay united.

Rajkhowa, 54, was captured from Dhaka by sleuths of the Rapid Action Battalion and then handed over to Indian authorities December last year. He was at the Guwahati Central Jail for the past one year.

To impress girlfriend, youth steals car father had sold

New Delhi,January 01:In a bizzare case, a 23-year-old Delhi University graduate who wanted to impress his girlfriend has been arrested for stealing a car his father had sold, police said Friday.

According to police, accused Gaurav Arora, stole the car his father had sold to another person. He was arrested from Vasant Vihar in south Delhi on Dec 25.

“Arora needed the car to impress his girlfriend, so he stole the car with the help of a duplicate which was with him,” a senior police officer said.

The arrest came following a complaint by the new owner of the car.

India to find reasons for its rockets’ failures

Bangalore/Chennai,January 01:India will analyse the flight data of its heavy rockets, including the geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-F06) that broke up on Christmas Day, to find out reasons for its failure and take corrective measures, the space agency said Friday.

“A failure analysis committee has been constituted to analyse the flight data of the GSLV-F06 and that of the previous six similar flights to establish reasons for its failure and recommend corrective action,” the state-run Indian Space Research Organsiation (ISRO) said in a statement here.

Taliban fires rockets into main US base near Kabul

Kabul,Janaury 01:The Taliban fired two rockets into the main U.S. base north of the Afghan capital early Thursday, while a NATO airstrike near the Pakistan border killed an insurgent commander and several other militants, the coalition said.

Master Sgt. Jason Haag, a NATO spokesman in Kabul, said “two rounds of indirect fire” hit Bagram Air Field before dawn, but had no additional details. Sher Mohammed Maldani, police chief for the Parwan province where the base is located, said there were no casualties reported. He said the insurgents fired and fled the scene.
