Brahma is new election commissioner

New Delhi, August 25: H.S. Brahma on Wednesday took over as election commissioner in the country’s top poll panel, a statement said.

A press release issued by the Election Commission said that Brahma filled the vacancy created by elevation of S.Y. Quraishi as the chief election commissioner last month.

Brahma, a 1975 batch (Andhra cadre) Indian Administrative Service Officer, has served as secretary, ministry of power, and special secretary in the National Disaster Management Authority, among other posts, the release said.

Centre drawing up contigency plan for Ayodhya verdict

New Delhi, August 25: The Centre is drawing a contingency plan to deal with any possible law and order situation arising out of the Allahabad High Court judgement in the Ayodhya title dispute next month.

The Home Ministry has began the process of consultation for a contingency plan and was gearing up to deal with any situation in the wake of the judgement.

Sources said there might be a law and order problem in the state when the judgement is delivered and hence adequate security forces would be needed, especially in Uttar Pradesh.

I’m lucky to get Saif: Kareena

Mumbai, August 25: Actress Kareena Kapoor is all praise for her beau Saif Ali Khan, with whom she is shooting for director Sriram Raghavan’s “Agent Vinod”, and says she is lucky to have him in her life.

“Very few people get love in life and such a supportive partner. Of course, I am very lucky that I have got a partner like Saif. He is a very unique man. His thoughts are much different from others and he always encourages me to work,” Kareena told news agency in an interview.

I’m single: Katrina Kaif

Mumbai, August 25: After months of speculation over her relationship with Salman Khan, actress Katrina Kaif has finally broken her silence, saying she is single.

The couple have been dating since the past six years but shied away from talking about their relationship in public.

Katrina’s declaration comes shorty after Salman told a news channel recently that he is not seeing her anymore.

“Yes, I am single. But beyond that I don’t think I need to give too much of details…,” Katrina said here last night after being named the international brand ambassador of Etihad Airways.

Land Acquisition Amendment Bill in next session: PM to Rahul

New Delhi, August 25: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that the pending Land Acquisition Amendment Bill will be brought in the next session of Parliament.

Singh gave the assurance to Gandhi when he met him with a delegation of Congress leaders and farmers from Uttar Pradesh who were agitating against “forcible” acquisition of land of farmers in Aligarh and adjoining areas in the state.

Gandhi said “land acquisition is a very important issue.

What happened in Aligarh is very unfair. We need to have a view on it.”

Lok Sabha pass n-liability bill

Mumbai, August 25: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday gave its nod to the civil nuclear liability bill after 18 amendments were made to the proposed atomic law that triples the liability cap on an operator in case of an accident to Rs.1,500 crore from Rs.500 crore.

The legislation was cleared by the lower house after the government removed the word “intent” and amended a controversial clause stating that the operator will have the right to recourse in case of a nuclear accident if it was the consequence of an “act of supplier or his employees done with the intent to cause nuclear damage”.

Manager arrested for stealing employer’s money

New Delhi, August 25: A 30-year-old accounts manager was arrested here for allegedly fleeing with Rs 8.5 lakh belonging to his employer, police said today.

Atul Jadon was arrested yesterday from his rented accommodation in Shastri Nagar.

His employer Naresh Goel had complained to police two days ago that Rs 8.5 lakh was missing from his house in Karol Bagh and he suspected Jadon’s involvement.

During investigations, police claimed, it came to light that Jadon had left his address given to his employer some days ago.

Saina Nehwal enters third round of World Championship

Paris, August 25: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal survived a scare before prevailing over unseeded Chinese Taipei’s Hsian Huan Chen in a thrilling three-game match to reach the prequarterfinals of World Championship here today.

The second seed Indian, one of the hot favourites to win the World title, beat Chen 20-22, 21-15, 21-8 in the second round of the women’s singles here.

Saina was clearly not in her elements in the first game as she blew a 20-18 lead while Chen, playing controlled shots at the nets, won her way through to 22-20.

Judges, advocates caught copying in exams

Warangal, August 25: Three district judges and seven advocates were debarred from the LLM first year examinations as they were caught copying by the Kakatiya University officials. Their answer sheets along with the copy material was seized from them.

Among those caught were Adilabad district sub judge M Krishnappa, Rangareddy district court judge K Ajith Narasimha Rao and Nizamabad district court judge P Vijayender Reddy. There were seven advocates who were also involved in the mass copying.

KCR leaves for Delhi

Hyderabad, August 25: Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao left for Delhi today to confer with likeminded political parties on measures the Centre should take for initiation of process for formation of Telagnana state.

The TRS chief is under the impression that the Srikrishna Committee is likely to submit its report in November when the winter session of Parliament would be in progress.

CM planning to constitute CLP executive

Hyderabad, August 25: In a prompt reply to the letter by Rayachoti MLA Srikant Reddy that the CLP officer was being used to discredit the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, chief minister K Rosaiah said he agreed with the observations of the Rayachoti MLA. He, however, rebutted the MLA’s allegation that he was behind the anti-YSR campaign. ”Not just you, but even I am not able to tolerate Congressmen using the CLP for this purpose,” the CM said.

Raju appears in court

Hyderabad, August 25: After a gap of ten months, the main accused in the Satyam scam, B Ramalinga Raju, today made a dramatic appearance before a local court, which is trying India’s largest corporate fraud running into about Rs 14,000 crore.

Ramalinga Raju had been avoiding appearing in the court since September last year citing health reasons.

He was granted bail by the Andhra Pradesh High Court last week. He was ordered to appear before the trial court for every hearing once he is discharged.

Ayyanar moves to NIA

Hyderabad, August 25: IPS officer Ravishankar Ayyanar, presently DIG, Karimnagar range, will be joining the National Investigating Agency (NIA) as its regional chief on deputation. The state government had recently issued orders to this effect.

Mahesh Chandra Laddha, presently deputy commissioner of police (East Zone) in Hyderabad, is also likely to go to the NIA as SP.

Karunakar Reddy ends 5-day fast

Tirupati, August 25: Former TTD chairman B Karunakar Reddy ended his indefinite fast today at the request of Kurtalam Peethadhipati Sri Siddheswarananda Bharati Swami.

Reddy took the lime juice offered by the swamiji at the SVRR Hospital, where he was forcibly shifted by the police in the wee hours breaking his five-day fast around 12 noon.

The swamiji said Hindu society is in need of the services of pious people like Karunakar, who made outstanding contribution to promotion of spiritualism when he was heading the TTD and urged him to give up his fast.

Government to proceed with Smriti Vanam project

Hyderabad, August 25: The state government will go ahead with the ‘Smriti Vanam’ project at Pavuarala Gutta in the Nallamala forest in Kurnool district, where former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy had died in a helicopter crash, without any clearances from the Union environment and forest department.

Jagan is more important than Telangana: Surekha

Kadapa, August 25: Former minster Konda Surekha was in tears at the YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s samadhi at Idupulapaya today, recalling her association with the late leader.

Keeping the ‘rakhi’ at the samadhi and seeking his blessings, Surekha said she never imagined that a day would come when she would not be able to tie a rakhi on Rajasekhara Reddy’s wrist.

After offering prayers at the samadhi, Surekha’s daughter tied a rakhi to Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy and sought his blessings.

‘Mysterious’ explosion near tribal village

Hyderabad, August 25: Confusion prevailed after Chenchu tribals claimed to have heard a loud explosion followed by a huge fire near Mudurallapalle in Chagalamarri mandal of Kurnool district at about 6.30 p.m on Tuesday.

Initially, there were apprehensions of an aircraft or helicopter crashing into the jungle. But they were set at rest after ATC officials at Chennai and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad said all flights that had taken off from their respective airports had reached their destinations safely.

Jagan camper blames CM for ‘anti-YSR campaign’

Hyderabad, August 25: Another hardcore supporter of Y S Jagan Mohan on Tuesday hit out at chief minister K Rosaiah, taking up the refrain of Parakal MLA K Surekha and suspended PCC general secretary Ambati Rambabu.

In a letter to the chief minister, Rayachoti MLA Srikanth Reddy alleged that Rosaiah is behind the campaign to discredit the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and were making use of the office of the Congress Legislature Party for that purpose.
