‘Taliban’ kill 6 civilians in Afghanistan

Kabul, July 08: Taliban militants have launched a rocket attack in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least six civilians and injuring several others, Afghans officials say.

The attack targeted a market in eastern Paktia province on Thursday.

Taliban have not yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Taliban-led violence has recently increased in Afghanistan, with militants targeting both military personnel and civilians.

The Taliban have regularly murdered tribal leaders accused of colluding with the government or US-led forces.

N Korea’s blunders caused tensions: S Korea

Seoul, July 08: South Korea’s point man on North Korea blamed the communist state’s leaders on Thursday for icy cross-border relations, accusing them of blunders both at home and abroad.

Unification Minister Hyun In-Taek said the North has only itself to blame for its international isolation.

Tensions are high after the South accused the North of torpedoing a warship — an accusation furiously denied by Pyongyang, which has threatened a “do or die” battle in response to any censure at the United Nations over the incident.

Three arrested in Norway al Qaeda bomb plot: Officials

Oslo, July 08: Three suspected al Qaeda members were arrested on Thursday morning in what Norwegian and US officials said was a terrorist plot linked to similar plans in New York and England.

The three men, whose names were not released, had been under surveillance for more than a year. Officials believe they were planning attacks with portable but powerful bombs like the ones at the heart of last year’s thwarted suicide attack in the New York City subway.

Three get judicial custody in Congressman’s murder case

Rajgarh, July 08: A local court on Thursday sent three persons allegedly involved in the killing of a Congress leader to judicial custody till July 19.

Narsinghgarh Judicial Magistrate First Class Vishal Sharma sent Nathulal, Mahesh and Hariprasad to judicial custody till July 19 on the charge of killing Boda Block Kisan Congress president Devnarayan Chourasia on July three, after they were produced in the court.

Attack on lecturer ‘well planned’: Kerala DGP

Kochi, July 08: The attack on a private college lecturer, whose right palm was chopped off for preparing an alleged inflammatory question paper, was a “well planned” one, a top police official said here today.

Kerala DGP Jacob Punnose, who this morning visited the scene of the crime where lecturer T J Joseph was attacked, told reporters that “it was a well planned attack” and the accused had hatched a conspiracy, spent money, resources to “meticulously” carry out the attack.

Police would make use of scientific methods to investigate the case, he said.

12-year-old attempts suicide in Delhi school

New Delhi, July 08: A 12-year-old boy Thursday attempted suicide after getting scolded by his teacher, police said. He suffered multiple fractures and is now being treated in hospital.

Sahil Sachdeva, a Class VI student of Mother Teresa Public School jumped from the school building after he was scolded by his teacher. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he is undergoing medical treatment.

Police are questioning the school authorities and the parents of the boy.

China arrests 800 online football gamblers

Beijing, July 08: Over 800 online gamblers were arrested across China while they were betting on the World Cup, the ministry of public security said Thursday.

Among those arrested, 65 people were from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, the Philippines and Malaysia, while the rest were from mainland China, China Daily reported citing a ministry statement.

Malaysia acts tough on sexual harassment

Kuala Lumpur, July 08: Office bosses in Malaysia who fail to act on sexual harassment complaints from employees will face a fine of up to 10,000 ringgit ($3,125).

A bill in this connection was presented in the parliament Thursday by Malaysian Deputy Human Resource Minister Maznah Mazlan.

The Employment (Amendment) Bill, 2010, says that not investigating and not submitting reports to the relevant authority will be considered as not acting on sexual harassment complaints, Xinhua reported.

2 US-led soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, July 08: Two more U-S-led soldiers have been killed in separate incidents in Afghanistan amid a surge in militant attacks in the war-torn country.

A US soldier died in a rocket attack in the eastern province of Kunar. Two more American troops were injured in the incident.

The other death was caused by a bomb explosion in southern Afghanistan.

The Hezb-i-Islami group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The death brings the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan so far this year to 341.

Satyam trial: AP Spl Court pulls up Raju’s lawyers

Hyderabad, July 08: The Special Court hearing the multi-crore Satyam Computer accounting scam today pulled up the counsel for B Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused, for not submitting an affidavit on whether he can be examined through a questionnaire given by the court.

“The case cannot go on like this for days together. If you don’t file your affidavit, we will decide the issue as per law. The court has already given two adjournments on this,” Magistrate B V L N Chakravarti said while deferring the matter to July 12.

Government to launch investor awareness campaign

New Delhi, July 08: The corporate affairs ministry Thursday said it will organise awareness camps across the country to attract investments into the corporate sector.

“There is significant household savings available with Indian households which can be channelised into the corporate economy which will result in not only higher returns for the investors but also more growth of the corporate sector,” said the ministry in a statement.

Sanctions won’t ‘halt’ nuclear programme: Iran

Bushehr, July 08: Fresh sanctions imposed by the UN on Iran over its uranium enrichment can slow but not halt the country’s atomic programme, the head of the Iranian nuclear initiative has said.

‘You can’t say that the sanctions won’t have an effect,’ state news agency quoted Ali Akbar Salehi, who heads the Iranian nuclear initiative, as saying Wednesday.

Iran is considering the construction of three to five new nuclear reactor facilities, which could be located at Bushehr or elsewhere.

The country claims that its programme is aimed at electricity production and medical research.

Disabled in UAE get 50 percent discount in taxis

Dhabi, July 08: Disabled and elderly people in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will now get an up to 50 percent discount on taxi fares.

Under the new scheme, disabled and elderly people and social assistance beneficiaries will be issued a discount card with taxi rates slashed up to 50 percent. Widows and woman divorcees will be given a discount of up to 25 percent, TransAD, Abu Dhabi’s taxi regulator, said in a statement.

An agreement in this regard has been signed by the ministry of social affairs and the taxi regulatory body.

Serial blasts in Assam, one killed

Guwahati, July 08: The outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Thursday struck in Assam triggering three explosions, including a blast on a passenger train that killed a five-year-old, officials said.

A police spokesperson said the blast at the Garib Rath Express from Guwahati to Kolkata took place at 2.15 a.m. at Babubil in Kokrajhar district, about 270 km west of Assam’s main city Guwahati.

Hyderabad, July 08: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Thursday offered his post to opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu for a week.

The offer was made during a debate in the assembly on the alleged illegal projects constructed by the Maharashtra government across the Godavari river.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief criticised the government for failing to stop the projects and protect the state’s interests. ‘If the chief minister wants, this problem can be solved in 10 minutes,’ Naidu said.

Three Al Qaeda suspects held in Norway

London, July 08: Three men, suspected to be Al Qaeda terrorists, have been arrested in Norway for planning ‘one of the most serious terrorist plots since 9/11’, Sky News reported Thursday.

The men, who were arrested in Oslo after being watched for over a year by Norwegian and US officials, were believed to be planning attacks similar to the one thwarted in the New York subway system last year.
