Katrina roped in for Salman’s ‘Dabangg’?

Mumbai, May 31: While Salman’s fans are waiting to witness his much talked about chemistry with Sonakshi Sinha in their upcoming film ‘Dabangg’, reports reveal that Katrina too has been roped in for the flick.

While the buzz about Sallu-Sonakshi’s bonding on the sets of ‘Dabangg’ has been grabbing headlines for long now, grapevine has it that Katrina too has been signed on for doing a special appearance in the movie.

Gunbattle breaks out in J&K’s Baramulla district

Srinagar, May 31: A gunbattle broke out between a group of militants and security forces in Baramulla district of North Kashmir Monday afternoon, police said.

Based on specific information about the presence of militants, troops of One Para, 32 Rashtriya Rifles and 40 Rashtriya Rifles raided Nardagi forest area, 60 kms from here.

Police said the militants, believed to be around four in number, started firing on the personnel, forcing them to retaliate.

The gunbattle was still on, they said.

On Board President’s Special Aircraft, May 31: Upbeat about her “fruitful” talks with China’s leadership, President Pratibha Patil today said that she had accomplished her goal of enhancing “trust, friendship and understanding” between the two countries.

Citing the support of the Chinese leaders on several crucial issues, including India’s bid for membership of the UN Security Council and correcting the trade imbalance now heavily in favour of China, Patil said that Sino-Indian relationship has gone beyond purely bilateral aspects and had acquired a global dimension.

Salman bats for Indo-Pak Peace: Let’s play together

Mumbai, May 31: Salman Khan’s team won the celebrity Indo-Pak cricket match held in Dubai on Thursday. The 15-over match was part of Khan’s initiative to raise awareness about his Being Human Foundation in the desert emirate.

Pakistani cricketers at the match included Shoaib Akhtar and Shoaib Malik, and singer Atif Aslam. The Pak team scored 120 and Khan’s team reached the target with one ball to spare.

Khan’s team included actors Mahesh Manjrekar, Riteish Deshmukh, Sanjay Kapoor, Vatsal Seth and Aashish Chaudhary.

SRK and Aishwarya aren’t teaming-up for Yash Raj film

Mumbai, May 31: Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan will not be seen together in Yash Raj Films (YRF) next project, a spokesperson from the production house said.

“Despite our categorical denial of this baseless rumour, the tabloid continued to publish this with an ambiguous quote from a person at YRF. It is totally baseless and not true, ” said an official statement from YRF.

“The least that should have been done was to have quoted us correctly and preferably not have carried this concocted story at all, ” it added.

Jharkhand in political flux, president’s rule likely

Ranchi, May 31: Jharkhand could be headed for a short spell of president’s rule as the three major political parties informed Governor M.O.H. Farook that at present they do not have the numbers to form an alternative government.

The governor is preparing a report on Jharkhand, which is likely to be sent by late Monday night to the union home ministry.

According to sources, the governor could recommend president’s rule in the state as no party has shown interest in forming an alternative government, a day after Shibu Soren resigned as chief minister.

Four soldiers killed by rebels in Philippines

Manila, May 31: Four soldiers were killed in an attack by communist rebels in the eastern Philippines, an army spokesman said Monday.

The troops were ambushed Sunday in Presentacion town in Camarines Sur province, 255 km south-east of Manila, Major Harold Cabunoc said.

He said the rebels threw grenades and opened fire at the soldiers as they were negotiating steep terrain, killing four and wounding three.

Cabunoc said the troops were pursuing a group of guerrillas who had earlier killed a soldier in an attack on an army outpost guarding a government road project.

SC takes serious note of caste violence in Haryana

New Delhi, May 31: The Supreme Court today took serious note of caste violence in Haryana and sought an explanation from the Hooda government regarding the lack of action taken against the perpetrators of atrocities against dalits in village Mirchpur in district Narnul, Haryana.

Forty houses of dalits were allegedly set on fire by Jats in the area on May 21, when they were protesting against the killing of a dalit woman by setting her afire.

One more cop held on robbery charges

Cuttack, May 31: Another policeman of the Cuttack- Bhubaneswar Commissionerate has been arrested on charges of robbing gold ornaments from two Gujarat traders, police said today.

Earlier, Mangalabag police had arrested two constables and a city-based jeweller in connection with the case.

Police said though constable Sangram Naik’s alleged involvement was known in the incident, his arrest was delayed as he was in Jammu and Kashmir as a member of a special police squad to probe into a kidnap case.

6 die in China after eating poisonous plants

Beijing, May 31: Six people died and seven others fell seriously ill after they mistakenly ate poisonous plants in China’s northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The victims, all workers at an iron mine in Toli County in Tacheng Prefecture, fell ill after they ate potherbs they had mistaken for celery yesterday, state-run news agency quoted a county government spokesman as saying.

Four of the victims died on the way to hospital. Two others failed to respond to treatment and died last night.

As of today, conditions of seven others were critical.

Trader found murdered along with family

Meerut, May 31: A trader along with his family was brutally murdered by some unidentified persons at his residence in the Begum Bagh area here, police said today.

55-year-old liquor trader Narendra Kumar was found murdered along with his wife Sangeeta (48) and two sons aged 14 and 12 at his apartment yesterday, they said.

The incident came to light when some children of the area went to call Kumar’s sons to play cricket. On finding the door locked, they peeped inside and saw blood everywhere. The neighbours soon called the police.

24 killed in thunderstorm in UP

Lucknow, May 31: At least 24 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh as thunderstorm hit several parts of the state, uprooting trees and electric poles, officials said today.

While nine persons were killed in Pratapgarh, eight deaths were reported from Aligarh, two each from Jaunpur and Mau and one each from Sultanpur, Lucknow and Nawabganj in storm-related incidents since yesterday, they said.

Trees and electric and telephone poles were uprooted at a number of places, disrupting train and vehicular movement on national highways.

Kanpur University students to have 17-digit UID numbers

Kanpur, May 31: To provide information on students, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University here will be providing 17-digit Unique Identity (UID) numbers to all its pupils taking admission this academic session.

“Every student will be provided with an UID number. They will also have a web page which will contain all significant information about examinations, attendance, results, co-curricular activities,” Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Harsh Kumar Sehgal told.
