GMR to hive off assets

Hyderabad, November 04: Infrastructure major GMR is all set to hive off its assets, create a holding company for its airport business and monetise its airport assets.

GM Rao, chairman of GMR Group, is on an over drive. After completing construction of the airport in Istanbul, he is now focusing on restructuring his business by hiving off the assets.

The company is scouting for private equity investments in its proposed holding company in charge of its airport assets.

The Reddys are spending Rs 12 lakh a day on 50 MLAs they have herded away to Goa and Hyderabad. Camping away from Bangalore and expressing unhappiness against Chief Minister Yediyurappa, the people’s representatives are having a fun time at the spas and the swimming pools, not to speak of the bars and restaurants.

Some are going out on cruises, and trying out their skills at water sports.

Multi-cornered contests certain

Hyderabad, November 04: The forthcoming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) are likely to witness multi-cornered contests in a majority of the divisions as the moves for forging alliances are yet to yield any tangible results.

The proposed tie-up between the Congress and the Praja Rajyam failed to take off following sharp differences that surfaced in the Congress. The Telugu Desam is yet to strike an accord with the Left parties.

Jobless tribal youths turn priests

Bhadrachalam, November 03: Almost 60 temples in Bhadrachalam division of Khammam district are all set to have archakas to conduct the daily poojas, which these temples have missed over the last many years, for lack of archakas.

It is estimated that more than 80 temples, some even as old as 100 years and above have been lying unattended, thanks to lack of priests to look after and conduct the daily poojas.

HC refuses to stay GHMC polls

Hyderabad, November 03: A division bench of the AP High Court comprising Justice A Gopala Reddy and S Govinda Rajulu on Monday refused to stay the forthcoming GHMC elections.

As reported earlier, two writ petitions were filed challenging the recent Government ordinance doing away with the need to identify the creamy layer while providing reservations for backward classes in the wards for the forthcoming elections.

Court dismisses paternity plea against N.D. Tiwari

New Delhi, November 03: In a big relief to Andhra Pradesh Governor N.D. Tiwari, the Delhi High Court Tuesday dismissed the plea of Rohit Shekhar who was claiming to be the veteran political leader’s son.

Justice S.N. Dhingra dismissed the plea of Rohit Shekhar, son of former Congress party activist Ujjwala Sharma, saying that Shekhar’s petition is “unmaintainable”.

KCR decision likely today

Hyderabad, November 03: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will announce its decision on whether it will contest the GHMC polls or not in a day or two.

The State Executive Committee of the party, which met here today, authorised party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao to take the decision.

Rao is likely to take a decision tomorrow.

Kidnapping mystery cracked

Kurnool, November 03: Police have cracked a kidnap case by nabbing one of the two offenders who abducted two persons claming themselves as Maoists for a ransom of Rs 25 lakh within a week. This was disclosed by Kurnool SP Srikanth who produced the kidnapper before the media at his chamber here today.

According to police, two people who came on a Pulser bike intercepted a Scorpio belonging to KMC constructions and kidnapped its project coordinator Pradeep Reddy and driver Prasad near Venkataramana colony here at 9:00 p.m on October 22.

Cheating case against Krishna and his brother

Hyderabad, November 03: Criminal cases have been registered against veteran actor Krishna and his brother Adi Seshagiri Rao for allegedly cheating a producer more than two decades ago. The producer’s son approached the court which directed the police to register a case against the actor and Padmalaya Studios and investigate the allegations.

According to the police, a financier, Babji, gave Rs 14.5 lakh to the Padmalaya Studios for producing a Telugu film, Mukhyamantri Ela Undal i s tar r ing Krishna in 1988 by the Padmalaya Studios.

A cop, Home Guard arrested for taking bribe

Lucknow, November 03: A police constable and a Home Guard were arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district Tuesday on charges of extorting money from three-wheeler drivers, police said.

Constable Dharmendra Dubey and Home Guard A.K. Rai were arrested after a three-wheeler driver lodged a complaint with the Kotwali police station.

Spielberg honoured for human rights work

London, November 03: Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg has been honoured by the Anti-Defamation League for his work in human rights.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker, 62, will be presented with America’s Democratic Legacy Award at the league’s annual Los Angeles fundraiser Dec 9, reports contactmusic.com.

Executives have hailed the “Schindler’s List” maker as a “true champion of human rights” for his contributions to film and television, in addition to his philanthropic endeavours.

Kate Hudson lost weight by giving up alcohol

London, November 03: Actress Kate Hudson had to give up alcohol to shed 20 pounds for her role in new movie “Earthbound”.

The Hollywood actress was forced to slim down to portray a terminally ill woman who falls in love with her doctor.

“I love my glass of wine. I love tequila. To be in New York for two weeks and not have one beverage, I am not sure I have ever done that,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Hudson as saying.

“My role demanded me to lose weight and the only way to do it was by cutting out drinking,” she added.

Etihad Airways to launch flights to Hyderabad

Abu Dhabi, November 03: Etihad Airways of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will operate four flights between Abu Dhabi and Hyderabad every week, WAM news agency reported Tuesday.

Etihad is the first UAE airline to operate flights in this sector and plans to operate daily flights in 2010.

With the addition of Hyderabad, Etihad flies to seven Indian destinations, including New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. The airline now operates 42 flights to India each week.

Ministry of Health stops shipment of 1.75m fake Viagra tablets

Dubai,November 03: The Ministry of Health seized 1.75 million fake Viagra pills at customs clearance in the Ghuwaifat checkpoint.

A company was trying to clear the fake drug to be exported.

The border authorities refused to let the shipment through and returned it to Ghuwaifat, where it was held after the Registration and Control Department at the Ministry of Health found out that the shipment of 86 boxes containing 1,750,000 Viagra tablets was not registered at the ministry.

Clinton Demands Iran Accept Nuclear Deal As Is

Cairo, November 03: Though Iran has expressed interest in a draft proposal for third party uranium enrichment, they have also sought additional talks and a handful of clarifications before finalizing the pact. The US appears to be ruling out any additional talks however.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now demanding that Iran accept the existing draft immediately “as is” and has said that under no circumstances would the US consider any alteration of the deal, which would see 70 percent of Iran’s uranium exported for further enrichment.

J&K cricketer’s bag tests negative for explosives
