Senior Journalists Chandar Srivatsav and Naseem Arifi have been selected for awards in the State Level Journalists category on the occasion of Telangana State Formation Day.

Over 35% candidates skip inter supplementary exams

More than 35% candidates have abstained from the Intermediate Advanced Supplementary Examinations held across Telangana State on Sunday.

Of 5,472 Vocational and 146 General & Bridge Course candidates, a total of 2,214 or 39.40% abstained from Public Administration – Paper I exams in the forenoon session. Similarly, of 1,922 Vocational and 236 General & Bridge Course candidates, as many as 737 or 34.15% skipped the Logic Paper – II exams held in afternoon session.

No cases of malpractice were booked in both the sessions. (INN)

Rs.55.49 Crore Power bill for Kirana Shop

A grocery store owner has got the shock of his life when he received an electricity bill of Rs Rs 55.49 crore for his shop here.

Krishna Prasad, who owns a kirana shop at Kadru in the state capital, went in a tizzy when he received the bill the day before on Saturday, his brother Jitendra said.

“We use to pay Rs 800 every month. We did not receive any bill for the last three months, and suddenly this bill reading Rs 55,49,88,036 reached us,” he told PTI.

Over one lakh candidates appear for TS POLYCET – 2015

Nearly one lakh candidates appeared for the POLYCET-2015, the entrance exam for admission into polytechnics, held across the Telangana State on Sunday.

The candidates have written the entrance test for 60,920 available polytechnic seats. Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari released the exam key at the State Secretariat on Sunday morning. The examination was conducted at 248 centres across the Telangana State. Speaking to media persons, Kadiyam informed that the POLYCET results would be announced on June 10 and the classes would commences from July 8. (INN)

2 youths from Indian township in S Africa die fighting for IS

Two youths belonging to the Muslim community of a small Indian township south of here have died allegedly fighting for the Islamic State, becoming one of the first South Africans to have died in Syria.

Articles in media outlets today said a confidential report had indicated that Fayaaz Valli, 23, had gone to Syria claiming to be working for an orphanage but ended up being killed while fighting with Islamic State.

Valli’s father Riyad told the weekly Sunday Times that he was heartbroken by the death of his son but did not believe he had joined the IS.

TNSF activists hold protest at Kukatpally MLA’s house

Nearly 100 activists of Telugu Nadu Students Federation (TNSF) on Sunday held a massive protest outside the residence of Kukatpally MLA M Krishna Rao, who joined the ruling TRS on Saturday.

The TNSF activists raised slogans against the MLA and TRS. They said that Krishna Rao was elected on TDP ticket and therefore, before joining the TRS, he must have resigned from the post. They demanded that Krishna Rao seek fresh elections as TRS candidate.

Some activists were taken into custody when they tried to barge into MLA’s residence. (INN)

TRS MP blames Centre for delay in HC bifurcation

TRS MP Vinod Kumar on Sunday accused the BJP-led NDA Government of causing deliberate delay in bifurcation of High Court.

Addressing a press conference here, Vinod Kumar said that the High Court should have been divided immediately after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. However, the Centre delayed the process and kept the issue pending. He said that the TRS would continue to pressurise the Centre till High Court is bifurcated.

Telangana Government is all set for the week-long celebrations to observe Formation Day on June 2, marking one year of formation of the new state.

The 10 districts in the newly-formed state have geared up for celebrating ‘Telangana Formation Day’ that will witness a host of events as part of week-long celebration on Telangana’s culture and struggle (for statehood) on a grand scale.

Suspected IS member arrested in Bangladesh today

A suspected member of Islamic State (IS) radical group has been arrested in Bangladesh capital Dhaka, a media report said on Sunday.

Police arrested the man on Saturday night, bdnews24.com reported citing Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner S.M. Jahangir Alam Sarker.

Police did not reveal the identity of the person.

Earlier on May 25, two more suspected members of the terror group were arrested from Dhaka’s Uttara and Lalmatia areas, the report said.

Cuban sets record for soccer ball head control

Former Cuban soccer player Erick Hernandez set a new Guinness record by holding soccer ball with head for 30 minutes in Havana on Saturday.

Hernandez held a “Brazuca” ball for 30 minutes and one second with his head, breaking the 22-minute record imposed by the Luis Carlos Garcia, who is also Cuban.

“It was an easy task, because all the conditions were in place, more than ever before,” Xinhua quoted Hernandez as saying.

He said his victory was a result of a hard training, especially focused in strengthening the abdomen muscles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said World No Tobacco Day was a day to “reaffirm our commitment” to reduce the menace of tobacco consumption.

“World No Tobacco Day reminds us of the harms associated with tobacco consumption and a day to reaffirm our commitment to reduce this menace,” he said in a tweet.

The prime minister added that the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) “focus on stopping illicit trade of tobacco products is a laudatory effort that will help in minimising tobacco consumption”.

NGO demands ban on sale of Maggi

After a ban on use of Maggi Noddles by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments, an NGO today sought an immediate ban on the sale and advertisments of Maggi noddles in the state.

Umang Foundation, a public welfare trust, today urged the Himachal government to immediately impose a ban on sale and advertisments of Maggi Noodles.

The Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments have already initiated action against the product being harmful to children’s health.

“But in Himachal, no action has been taken by the government so far,” Surinder Kumar, trustee of the foundation said.

5 Mumbai policemen arrested in drug case

The Crime Branch of Mumbai police today arrested five police personnel in connection with the drug seizure case involving former head constable Dharmaraj Kalokhe and Shashikala alias Baby Patankar.

Crime branch today arrested senior police inspector Suhas Gokhale, inspector Gautam Gaikwad, sub inspector Sudhakar Sarang, assistant sub-inspector Jyotiram Mane and head constable Yeshwant Parate, police sources said.

On May 15, police had arrested Paulraj Duraiswami alias Paul from Tamil Nadu. Today’s arrests take the number of persons arrested in this case to eight.

Militants kill 31 Syrian forces in captured town

Militant groups killed as many as 31 Syrian forces in the northwestern town of Ariha, which fell in the hands of the militants on Thursday, a monitor group said on Friday.

The so-called al-Fath Army, a coalition of several extremist groups mainly the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, executed 13 government forces, including one Hezbollah fighter, in Ariha in the southern countryside of the northwestern province of Idlib, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Tunis museum attack: Moroccan accused demands house arrest

Lawyers for Abdelmajid Touil, who was arrested in Italy over the March 18 attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunisia, have asked for house arrest for the Moroccan national, according to officials cited by the national news agency Ansa.

Touil should be given house arrest as there is no risk he will flee Italy because he came to the country to join his family, the lawyers said.

Touil has been transferred to Milan’s Opera jail from the northern Italian city of Milan’s medium-security San Vittore prison, according to sources cited by Ansa.

Militants kill 15 passengers in Pakistan

A group of unknown militants on Friday night killed at least 15 passengers after kidnapping them in Pakistan’s south-western province of Balochistan, a media report said.

The incident took place when unknown militants stopped two buses and kidnapped 35 passengers in Mastung district of the province, Xinhua reported

Soon after the incident, security forces rushed to the site and chased the kidnappers.

Security forces exchanged firing with the kidnappers, who later killed 15 of the abducted passengers.

Communal clash in Lucknow, security beefed up

A communal clash broke in the state capital on Friday night after a minor spat between two communities over use of a loudspeaker during Friday prayers snowballed into pitched battles and incidents of vandalism, officials said.

The violence took place at an area under the Bazarkhala police station in old city. Both sides pelted stones at each other, and fired blanks in the air.
