Colombo, August 14: A court martial convicted Sri Lanka’s former army chiefSarath Fonseka on Friday of meddling in politics while on active service and stripped him of his rank and medals.
“The guilty verdict was read out to General Fonseka at the court martial a short while ago,” a senior military source said. “The president as commander-in-chief must now ratify the decision.”
Fonseka’s hearing before the three-member tribunal began five months ago despite protests from his party and rights groups that the process was seriously flawed.
Hyderabad, August 14: Two people were injured Saturday when the gun of a legislator’s bodyguard accidentally went off in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district, police said.
The freak accident took place in Samuel George College in Markapuram area of Prakasam district.
The gunman of legislator A. Suresh of the ruling Congress party was reportedly cleaning his gun when it suddenly went off. A car driver and canteen manager were injured in the accident and were admitted to a hospital.

Hyderabad, August 14 (Siasat News): TDP politburo member Mr. Zahid Ali Khan has expressed his dissidence over the defamatory remarks on Moghal emperor Aurangzeb by congress leader Jeevan Reddy.
Mr. Khan, showing his reaction, said that Mr. Reddy had no right to utter the name of an emperor of Aurangzeb’s repute. In his journalistic statement, Mr. Khan termed Jeevan Reddy as a fraud and deceiver.
Delhi, August 14: Heavy rains lashed the national capital tonight even as humidity remained high during daytime.Heavy showers began at around 10 pm. Maximum humidity recorded today at 92 per cent and minimum at 59 per cent.
The minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 27.4 and 35.6 degree Celsius.
Weatherman has predicted one or two spells of rain on Saturday with temperature oscillating between 27 and 36 degree Celsius.

Srinagar, August 14: In the wake of fresh clashes in the Kashmir during the holy month of Ramadhan, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called a high-level meeting on Saturday to discuss the current situation.
Earlier, four people were killed and 47 others were injured on Friday in the clashes between the protestors and the security forces at different places across the valley.

Srinagar, August 14: Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader prayed for the victims of flash flood in Leh town of Jammu and Kashmir and Zhouqu country in China.
To express his distress and grief the Nobel laureate participated in a mass prayer organized at the Tsuglagkhang temple at McLeodganj. He has also offered condolences to the surviving family members of the flood victims.
Qandil Mountains, August 14: Kurdish rebels fighting Turkey from bases in northern Iraq declared a unilateral cease-fire for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The rebels belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, have staged hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets in their decades-long campaign for autonomy in Turkey’s Kurdish-dominated southeast. Similar announcements by rebels in the past have failed to open the way to a lasting peace.
New Delhi, August 14: The Delhi High court Friday dismissed the application of former Andhra Pradesh governor ND Tiwari seeking changes in the paternity suit filed by a lawyer who is claiming to be his biological son.
Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, while dismissing Tiwari’s application, also imposed a cost of Rs.75,000 on him.

Warangal, August 14: Warangal police on Friday arrested Prabhakar, husband of the Telugu Desam Party MP Gundu Sudha Rani on charges of tax evasion.
According to sources, the Commercial Taxes department sleuths had lodged a complaint with the police that the MP’s husband had evaded paying taxes and asked them to register a case against him.
The commercial taxes department sources stated that Prabhakar has evaded tax to the tune of Rs 10 lakh towards government.
Acting on the complaint, the police arrested Prabhakar.

Washington, August 14: Five Pakistan-based “most dangerous bad guy groups”, including Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, pose a critical threat in war-torn Afghanistan, says a top US official.
“Of course, Afghanistan and Pakistan have always been closely related,” US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke told “Charlie Rose” on PBS. “From the day Pakistan became independent they’ve had a bad relationship.”
New Delhi, August 14: The Centre has sought a report from the Madhya Pradesh government on the 600 tonnes of explosives having gone missing while being transported from Rajasthan.
“It is a very serious matter. We have asked the Madhya Pradesh government to send a report immediately,” a Home Ministry official said.
About 600 tonnes of explosives sent from a Rajasthan-based factory have gone missing on their way to Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh.

At least four persons were killed and several others injured in firing by security forces in Kupwara and Baramulla Districts on Friday.
According to sources, the forces opened fire to disperse protesters at Tergham in Kupwara.
After the incident, tension has gripped the entire area.

Talking to media persons, Mr Rambabu questioned the integrity of the person making charges of irregularities against him, Madhu Yaskhi Goud.
Mr Rambabu alleged that Mr Goud had swindled people of their money by promising to send people to the United States through illegal means.
New Delhi, August 14: Former Andhra Pradesh Governor ND Tiwari on Friday received a jolt from the Delhi High Court when his plea seeking deletion of certain paragraphs from the paternity case filed by Rohit Shekhar was rejected.
Mr Rohit Shekhar is claiming that Mr Tiwari is his biological father and he was born out of a relationship between the former AP Governor and his mother.
