Man held for molesting daughter

Srikakulam, September 26: A daily labourer has been arrested on Sunday after his 13-year-old daughter lodged a complaint against him for sexually molesting with her at Ingham village, Kothur mandal in Srikakulam district.

According to police, the incident took place when the girl was alone with her father after her mother who too was a labourer, had gone for work.
The labourer is believed to have claimed that he was unwell and stayed at home.

Rs 1000 note of 1954 popular in Tanjavur

Tanjavur, September 26: As the country celebrates the millennium of the Chola-built Brihadeeswara Temple here, Rs 1,000 denomination bank notes featuring the Temple that came into circulation in 1954 are gaining currency among numismatics. The panoramic shot of the Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the Big Temple, had first appeared on the Rs 1,000 notes on April 1, 1954.

2-year-old crushed under school bus at Rambagh

Hyderabad, September 26: All hopes of the mother of a two-year-old to see her girl educated in the best English medium school in town got crushed under the wheels of a private school bus at Rambagh in Attapur today. The girl, S Jahnavi, was run over by a bus when she was playing on the road resulting in her instant death.

Sports meet at Angrau from September 27

Hyderabad, September 26: Inter-collegiate sports, games, cultural and literary meet will be organised jointly by the Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University and College of Home Science at the sports complex in the Angrau premises from September 27 to 30.

Speaking to mediamen here today, Dr. S V Ramakrishna Rao, dean, student affairs, Angrau said nearly 1,000 students from 13 different affiliated colleges of NG Ranga university will participate.

PNR Infra denies role in CWG

Hyderabad, September 26: PNR Infra, a Hyderabad-based infrastructure and construction firm, has clarified that it had nothing to do with the Commonwealth Games, contrary to a report published in these columns that the foot-overbridge that collapsed near the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in New Delhi was constructed by it.

In a statement issued here, the company said it was at no point of time involved in the preparations for the Commonwealth Games. It termed as far from the truth the report that the Delhi goverrnment had blacklisted it.

Apart from realising the water cess of Rs 120 crore till date for the current financial year, the irrigation officials succeeded in collecting arrears of Rs 370 crore which were pending for the past few years.

CBI probe proves I am innocent: Botsa

Hyderabad, September 26: Panchayat raj minister B Satyanarayana has expressed relief over the deletion of his name from the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the city courts in the 2-million Euro Volkswagen scandal.

Speaking to reporters here today, the minister claimed that the fact that he had no involvement in the scam had been finally confirmed by the CBI. The minister said that the CBI had held a press conference in the morning at Delhi and stated that the names of the officials and non-officials of the state had been removed from the chargesheet.

Hoax call on ragging keeps cops on tenterhooks

Warangal, September 26: A hoa x call stating that ragging was taking place on Kakatiya University campus kept police on tenterhooks on Friday night. On receiving the call from a coin box phone last night, the Warangal Urban SP alerted university police who visited Pothana hostel on the campus where PG second year students were accommodated.

Police took a student, Raju, who is pursuing PG second year and his brother, a non-boarder, present in a room to police station and enquired about the incident late last night. Early this morning, they called some junior students and enquired about it.

CWG blues: Officials concede only few tourists may visit Delhi

New Delhi, September 26: Till two months ago, India’s tourism ministry was confident that 100,000 foreign tourists would visit the national capital during the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games. But now they concede, albeit in hushed tones, that the number will be far, far less.

While some officials say most will be domestic tourists, others say dengue and swine flu cases as well as negative media about the Games are keeping foreign visitors away.

Tehran, September 26: “The US and the Zionists developed the strategy of the September 11 attacks in an effort to counter the Islamic vigilance and to control energy resources in the Middle East,” Brigadier General Yahya Rahim-Safavi as saying on Saturday to media.

Four more swine flu deaths in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, September 26: Four more persons succumbed to H1N1 virus, taking the death toll due to swine flu in Madhya Pradesh to 71 since last month, officials said here today. Pankaj Mehto (26), a resident of Sehore, Shiv Lal (46) and Neetu Chouhan (28) – both hailing from Bhopal, died while undergoing treatment here, officials said adding Vimla Bai (42), hailing from Ujjain being treated in Indore also succumbed to the virus.

Krishna, Qureshi likely to meet Monday

New Delhi, September 26: Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna is likely to meet with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi Monday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session here, a media report said.

The date and time of the meeting have yet to be agreed upon, but diplomats here told Dawn News the meeting would probably take place Monday.

Krishna had a ‘chance encounter’ with Qureshi at the UN Friday, where they greeted each other warmly and talked about the floods in Pakistan.

Fresh violence claims two in Iraq

Tehran, Setember 26: Two people have been killed and several others wounded in the latest violence in Iraq as the Iraqi police report success in detecting militants in the war-torn country.

Unidentified gunmen shot down a civilian on Saturday in front of his home in the western al-Amil neighborhood of Mosul, the capital of the northern province of Nineveh, Aswat al-Iraq news agency quoted provincial police sources as saying.

According to reports, the man used to drive army and police personnel from their units in Mosul to their residences in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Suspected Maoists kill two tribals in AP

Visakhapatnam, September 26: Suspected Maoists have killed two tribals in remote Kotagunnulu village of the district, police said today. Two tribals, P Srikanth and P Prasad (both in their late 20s), were believed to have been hacked to death by axe and other sharp weapons by a group of Maoists at the village late last night, Visakhapatnam (Rural) District Superintendent of Police Vineet Brijlal told PTI. “Both the tribals died on the spot,” the SP said.

Airstrike targets Al Qaeda commander in Afghanistan: NATO

Kabul, September 26: US-led coalition forces targeted a senior Al Qaeda commander with a precision airstrike in eastern Afghanistan, while two NATO soldiers died in the southern region, the military said Sunday.

Acting on intelligence inputs, coalition forces tracked the commander to a remote compound in the Darah-e-Pech district of the eastern province of Kunar Saturday night, NATO said.

Indian sand sculptor wins three medals in US

Washington, September 26: Noted Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won three medals in the North American sand sculpting competition at Virginia Beach as part of the Neptune Festival 2010 celebrating its 37th anniversary.

Pattnaik, one of 11 professional sculptors to take part in the largest competition of its kind in the US, won medals for Neptune’s Choice, Sculptor’s Choice and fifth place in the solo championship at Virginia Beach, about 200 miles from here, on the east coast.
