PM calls for calm ahead of Ayodhya verdict

Mumbai, September 29: A day ahead of the Babri Masjid-Ramjanmabhoomi verdict that will put to test India’s ideal of religious tolerance, India was on alert Wednesday with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, among others, appealing for peace and mutual respect.

While the central and state governments stepped up security to ward off any communal trouble following the verdict on the 61-year-old dispute, some said India had moved on since 1992 when the Babri Masjid was demolished by Hindu radicals who believed it was built on the birthplace of Lord Ram.

5 die in flood-hit UP

Lucknow, September 29: Five more persons died in flood- related incidents in Uttar Pradesh, taking the toll this season to 420 in the state, officials said today. “Five deaths have been reported from different parts of the state since yesterday as 644 more village were inundated by the flood waters in UP,” a spokesman of Relief Commissioner Office said.

India for urgent UNSC reforms to reflect contemporary realities

New Delhi, September 29: Speaking at United Nations Genral Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Wednesday demanded reforms in the United Nations Security Council, clearly hinting at the demand of a permanent seat for India.

Addressing the UNGA, Krishna said, “Urgent reform of United Nations Security Council needed to reflect contemporary realities.” “Steps must be taken to expand the council”, he added.

Respect Ayodhya verdict: PC to people

New Delhi, September 29: Amid apprehensions of breach of peace following the Allahabad High Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya case, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday appealed to people for respecting the judgment and maintaining composure.

Swine flu claims two more lives in MP, toll rises to 75

Bhopal, September 29: Two more persons today succumbed to swine flu in Indore, taking the death toll due to the disease to 75 in Madhya Pradesh since August, officials said.

A 30-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man succumbed to the viral influenza at different hospitals in Indore, they said.

So far the disease claimed 32 lives in Bhopal, 27 in Indore, 11 in Jabalpur, four in Gwalior and one in Harda.

Meanwhile, five more persons were tested H1N1 positive here, taking the total number of patients suffering from swine flu in the state to 303.

US Homeland Security apologises to Praful Patel

Washington/New Delhi, September 29: The US Homeland Security has apologised to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel who was questioned by the immigration authorities in Chicago as his name and date of birth happened to match with that of a person on America’s watch-list.

Patel, who was in Chicago on a private visit and flew to Montreal for attending an official engagement, was stopped and quizzed at the O’Hare airport.

The Minister was asked why he was visiting the US and whether he had stayed in the country earlier.

Omar hits out at separatists for shunning dialogue

Ganderbal (JK), September 29: Slamming the separatists who have rejected the Kashmir initiative, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said they have failed to move ahead purposefully on a dialogue with the Centre despite the best efforts of his government.

“I have always flagged the role of separatists in the settlement of political issues of the state and paved the way for dialogue channel between them and the Centre. However, separatists never helped in creating a peaceful atmosphere to move ahead on the subject purposefully,” he said addressing a ‘Gram Sabha’ here.

Supreme Court slams govt on CWG corruption

New Delhi, September 29: The Supreme Court today slammed “rampant corruption” in the Commonwealth Games to be held here and castigated the government for the collapse of the foot overbridge “like a pack of cards” near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

“In this country, payments are made without work being done. Newly-constructed bridge collapsed like a pack of cards.

Rs 70,000 crores are involved (in the games). There is rampant corruption in the country. We cannot shut our eyes,” a Bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly said.

Indo-Bangla border areas on alert on Ayodhya verdict eve

Shillong, September 29: Indo-Bangla border areas and places in Meghalaya sharing boundary with Assam have been put on alert ahead of the Allahabad High Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya dispute tomorrow.

“Though we don’t expect any repercussions of the verdict in the state, yet there is a possibility that miscreants might try to take advantage of the situation and create some mischief,” a senior Meghalaya Police officer said.

Vulnerable places have been identified and extra vigil maintained in these areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

Court summons Lalu, Rabri, Paswan

Muzaffarpur, September 29: A Bihar court today summoned RJD chief Lalu Prasad, his wife Rabri Devi and LJP president Ramvilas Paswan to personally appear in connection with a case related to violence during the state-wide bandh called by the two parties against price rise in January.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Arun Kumar Singh asked Prasad, leader of the opposition in the assembly Rabri Devi and Paswan to ppear in the court on October 6 to facilitate framing of charges in the case.

Court reserves order on Shah’s bail plea till October 8

Ahmedabad, September 29: A special CBI court here today reserved its order on the bail plea of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, till October 8 amid some high pitched arguments between two senior counsels K T S Tulsi and Ram Jethmalani.

Special judge G K Upadhyay reserved the order on Shah’s bail plea which was filed on July 26, the very next day of his arrest, after Tulsi representing CBI and Jethmalani appearing for Shah completed their arguments.

Gadkari slams UPA, says BJP would return to power

Nagaon (Assam), September 29: BJP President Nitin Gadkari today held UPA’s policies responsible for various problems plaguing the country and exuded confidence that his party would return to power in 2014.

Chidambaram assures foolproof security during Games

New Delhi, September 29: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday said the government will provide foolproof security during the Commonwealth Games (CWG) and it would be wrong to say that there was a credible threat to the event.

“Foolproof security will be provided,” he said, answering queries from mediapersons.

Asked about the measures taken for air surveillance, the minister refused to get into specifics and said the Indian Air Force had its own obligations.

HC admits Kasab’s appeal against death sentence

Mumbai, September 29: The Bombay High Court today admitted an appeal filed by Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab challenging the death sentence awarded to him for his role in the 26/11 terror attacks.

Justices Ranjana Desai and R V More said the appeal would be heard along with the matter pertaining to confirmation of death sentence imposed on Kasab by the trial court for killing 166 people in the dastardly attacks.

The judges, however, deferred till October 6 their ruling on who should be asked to open arguments — the state or the defence.

Hyderabad to host second India-New Zealand Test

Mumbai, September 29: The second Test between India and New Zealand would be played at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi stadium at Uppal from November 12-16 instead of the originally designated venue, Kanpur.

“Hyderabad will be the new Test centre and has been allotted the second Test against New Zealand,” the Cricke Board said today.

The allotment of the Test match to Hyderabad and the inability expressed by Punjab Cricket Association to host an ODI against the visitors has necessitated more changes in the tour itinerary, according to the BCCI.

Nation waits with bated breath for Ayodhya verdict

Lucknow, September 29: The Allahabad High Court will deliver its judgement tomorrow on the 60-year-old Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid, an issue that had changed the course of politics in the last two decades and has the nation worried over the fallout of the verdict.

Security was ramped up across the country and leaders cutting across political and religious spectrum appealed for calm on the eve of the verdict on four title suits on the ownership of the land where the Ramjanambhoomi- Babri Masjid site is located.

Stop making nonsensical statements, BJP tells Digvijay

New Delhi, September 29: BJP today attacked Congress leader Digvijay Singh for his statement that it should “realise 2010 is not 1992” and practice restraint, saying he should not make “irresponsible comments” and stay within limits of propriety.

“On the one hand, the government appeals for peace (after the Ayodhya verdict) and on the other hand, some Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh make sympathetic statements on Naxals and have been in the news for favouring terrorists,” BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

Strike at Calcutta High Court withdrawn

Kolkata, September 29: The indefinite strike by Calcutta High Court employees was today withdrawn on the ninth day following an appeal by Chief Justice J N Patel. “We have decided to withdraw the agitation in view of the Chief Justice”s appeal for the sake of the institution and litigants,” High Court Officers” Association Secretary Debabrata Chakraborti said here.

R R Patil’s underworld nexus exposed

Maharashtra, September 29: The Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil’s nexus with underworld was caught on camera.

The footage shows Patil with Salim Patel, who is considered a close associate of India’s most wanted fugitive Dawood Ibrahim.

Salim is also the driver of Dawood’s younger sister Haseena Parkar.

The video reveals the presence of another dreaded criminal Mobin Qureshi as well.

Both Salim and Qureshi have pending cases of extortion against them. Salim was also arrested in the Hyderabad blast case.

New Delhi, September 29: On the eve of the Ayodhya verdict, the Centre today said adequate measures have been taken to ensure that there is no trouble as it once again appealed for maintenance of peace for which it even invoked Mahatma Gandhi.

Observing that India has “moved on” since 1992, Home Minister P Chidambaram said he does not “foresee any problems” as almost all political parties, religious groups and those associated with the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits have said that they would respect the court verdict.

UID: Ranjana gets first card

Mumbai, September 29: Ranjna Sonevate, a resident of Tembhli village in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, has become the first recipient of India’s ambitious Unique Identity (UID) project.

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday launched the world’s first biometric identification card, UID, from Maharashtra’s backward district Nandurbar.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), headed by corporate leader Nandan Nilekani, will produce the 12-digit UID card called as Aadhaar for billions of Indian citizen.

Amit Shah’s bail plea decision Oct 8

New Delhi, September 29: A Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court hearing the bail plea of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh killing on Wednesday reserved its order till Oct 8.

Special CBI Judge G.K. Upadhayay in Ahmedabad put off the order after hearing the concluding arguments by Shah’s lawyer Ram Jethmalani.

The lawyer argued that allegations of coercion made by witnesses Nayeemuddin and Azam Khan, who had both retracted their earlier statement to the CBI, should be taken on record.
