Akali worker booked for throwing acid on Congress worker

A local Akali leader Surinder Chowdry has been booked for allegedly throwing acid on a Congress worker in the Putlighar area near the polling booth, police said.

A criminal case was registered in the evening against Chowdry for throwing acid on Congress worker Dimple Arora, who escaped unhurt but his trouser was partially burnt, they said.

Curfew in parts of Srinagar city following youth’s death

Curfew was tonight imposed in parts of Srinagar city as a preventive measure following the killing of a youth in firing by security forces during protests.

“Curfew has been imposed in old city area as a preventive measure to maintain law and order,” a spokesman of the district administration told PTI.

He said curfew was imposed after a youth Bashir Ahmad Bhat was killed in firing during stone-pelting protests in the Nawakadal area of the city.

Meanwhile, two more youth have been admitted to hospital with pellet injuries sustained during protests after the killing of Bhat.

EU to observe elections in Egypt

The European Union (EU) Wednesday said it had deployed an election observation mission (EOM) to Egypt for its presidential elections scheduled May 26-27, in response to an invitation by local authorities.

The EU said in a statement that it had been calling for credible and transparent elections in Egypt, allowing for universal participation and carried out according to international standards, Xinhua reported.

The EOM works as an independent body that conducts impartial assessment of the electoral process on the basis of all relevant elections’ standards, the statement added.

Egypt rejects criticism of mass death sentences

Egypt has voiced rejection of the criticism of recent court verdicts of mass death sentences to the Muslim Brotherhood supporters, terming it “unacceptable interference” in judicial affairs.

“We reaffirm the independency of the Egyptian judiciary and reject any interference from anybody, whether it is a country or an organization,” Justice Minister Nayer Osman said in a press conference Wednesday.

The Supreme Court Wednesday gave a month’s time to Manu Sharma to respond to the contempt notice for throwing ink on Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy March 4 when he was brought to the court by police for a personal appearance.

Granting one month time to reply to contempt notice on Sharma had requested for it, a bench of Justice K.S.Radhakrishnan and Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar said that such incidents of attacks were taking place all over the country.

14 killed as Iraq undergoes parliamentary polls

Iraqis Wednesday participated in their country’s first parliamentary elections since withdrawal of US forces in 2011. Held amid heavy security, the polls were still marred by dozens of attacks that left 14 people killed at different places.

Heavy security was in place, with hundreds of thousands of soldiers and police deployed to protect polling stations and a vehicle ban in Baghdad. But dozens of attacks targeting the election across Iraq left 14 people dead, BBC quoted officials as saying.

NHRC takes up environmental hazard of Delhi garbage dumps

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the central and Delhi governments and three civic agencies on the environmental hazards emnating from three landfill sites in the capital.

“Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report on the landfills’ threat to environmental health, notices have been issued notices to the secretary, union ministry of environment and forests, chief secretary, government of Delhi and commissioners of all three municipal corporations,” said the NHRC in a statement.

CPI-M alleges large-scale rigging in West Bengal, seeks repoll

The CPI-M Wednesday complained to the Election Commission of “widespread rigging” in the Lok Sabha election in West Bengal and demanded re-polling in several places to be overseen by paramilitary forces.

“There has been large-scale rigging and violence in the elections to the 16th Lok Sabha held in West Bengal today. This has completely distorted the process of conducting free and fair polls,” said the Communist Party of India-Marxist in a letter to the poll panel.

US places India on IPR Priority Watch List

Delhi High Court asked to ban artificially-coloured fruits, vegetables

A plea was filed Wednesday in the Delhi High Court seeking immediate ban on sale of fruits and vegetables, which contain artificial colour and harmful preservatives.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw, agreeing to hear the PIL, posted the plea for May 21 and clubbed it with another petition that relates to pesticides in fruits and vegetables.

The PIL filed by advocate Sugriv Dubey alleged that fruits and vegetables sold in Delhi are “quoted with carbohydrate and other cancerous chemicals to increase their life span”.

Over 72% electors vote to form first Telangana Govt

Barring a few instance of minor violence, the polling was by and large peaceful in 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha constituencies on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here, Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal informed that there was an increase in overall polling percentage in all districts of Telangana. Nearly 72 per cent or 2.10 crore voters had exercised their vote for 265 Lok Sabha and 1669 Assembly candidates. Compared to 2009 elections, there was an increase in the polling percentage.
