Hyderabad, February 03: The crucial political affairs committee (PAC) meeting of the PRP will be held here tomorrow. PRP president K Chiranjeevi will preside over the meeting. The meeting assumes significance in the light of defence minister AK Antony recently calling on Chiranjeevi at the latter’s residence and extending invitation to meet Sonia Gandhi.

Kiran spells out home truths to Venkataswamy

Hyderabad, February 03: Chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy today strongly objected to allegations levelled against Congress president Sonia Gandhi by senior Congress leader G Venkataswamy yesterday. He termed the CWC member’s statements as most unfortunate and pointed out that Sonia Gandhi had twice sacrificed the PM’s post in the interests of the party.

Addressing the media at Secretariat tonight, the chief minister criticised Venkataswamy for making baseless allegations despite his experience of decades in the party.

Former chief secretary SR Ramamurthy dead

Hyderabad, February 03: Former chief secretary SR Ramamurthy passed away here today. He was 85. He is survived by three sons.

Ramamurthy served as collector of Anantapur and East Godavari districts. He headed industries and education departments before his elevation as chief secretary. He also served as advisor to former chief minister Marri Chenna Reddy.

Ever since US Immigration and Customs Enformcement (ICE) officials called on her to check her status in the country, her spirits have sunk.

Relief as jumbos march towards TN border

Tirupati, February 03: The herd of 21 elephants that had Kuppam and surrounding villages on the edge for close to 12 hours finally moved towards the forests on the Chittoor-Tamil Nadu border.

They had strayed into Lakshmipuram near Kuppam on Tuesday morning, attracted by the water tank at the Varadarajaswamy temple. While the panicky locals alerted the forest department officials and police, the pachyderms played and rested in the water body till late in the evening.

Ration cards distribution from Feb 15

Karimnagar, February 3: Civil Supplies Minister D Sridhar Babu on Wednesday stated that the government will set up DPL Centres to distribute ration cards in the state.

Talking to media persons after participating in Racha Banda organized at 31st division, Subhash Nagar in Karimnagar district, the Minister said the government will distribute ration cards to all eligible persons through DPL Centres from February 15.

Workers faint to booming sounds, media criticised for false news

Nalgonda, February 3: Relatives and police of some people who had fainted due to large booming sounds emerging from a power generation plant at Premier Explosives Company Limited at Kandukuru mandal in Yadagirigutta mandal in Nalgonda district lashed out at media for reporting that a bomb explosion had taken place there.

The relatives and police vent their ire at various television channels for releasing scrolling which stated that a massive explosion had occurred in the company and also claimed that some deaths had according.

Parents refuse to receive psychopath killer’s body

Nizamabad, February 03: The parents refused to receive the body of notorious psychopath killer Nalla Nagender Reddy, who was shot dead by the Bengaluru cops in an encounter on Tuesday. Nagender Reddy was reportedly involved in 13 heinous crimes including six murders. Following the Red Corner notice issued by the Interpol, the police in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka was on a lookout for him.

Mild tremors spread panic in Nellore

Nellore, February 3: Panic prevailed among people of Udayagiri and Varikuntapadu mandals in Nellore district in the wee hours of Wednesday after mild tremors rocked some villages.

According to reports, the mild tremors lasted for a few ‘moments’, led to the villagers running out of their houses in panic. The tremors are also reported to have led to some minor cracks being developed on the walls of some houses in villages.

The villagers claimed that they experienced the tremors thrice in succession.

Operation Gaja fails, pachyderms continue to terrorise villagers

Chittoor, February 3: The attempts of the Forest Department officials to push the ‘invaders’ in the form of a herd of elephants back into the forest area ended in failure on Wednesday, leaving the officials to continue to ask people to remain under ‘curfew’.

The forest officials had earlier in the day launched `Operation Gaja’, utilizing the services of two well trained pachyderms, Jayanthi and Ganesh, to push back the invading herd in the forests bordering the Pedaparthykunta, Rallapalli and Soudaginepalle areas of Chittoor district.

MP reveals YSR letter to take sting out of Jagan

Couple tries to sell Baby for just 100

Hyderabad, February 02: A ragpicker couple on Tuesday evening made a vain bid to “sell” their 8-month-old daughter at Mangalam village.

The locals saw a frail woman pleading with people to buy the infant fore just `100. The villagers said the couple was ready to give away their child even for free. They said they were both suffering from ill-health and didn’t want their child to become a ragpicker.

Locals informed the police, media and a voluntary organisation. However, by the time, the police reached the spot, the couple had left.

One killed as wild elephants ravage agriculture fields

Chittoor, February 2: One person is believed to have been trampled to death and 15 others injured when a herd of wild elephants ventured into villages on the border of the state with Karnataka in Chittoor district, destroying nearly 100 acres of sugarcane, paddy and vegetable crops.

However Kuppam Sub-Inspector Sai Prasad said that the news of the death of the man is yet to be verified.

The wild elephants, said to be about 40, had ventured into the agricultural fields from Karnataka early on Tuesday and were at present cooling off in the Lakshmipuram Lake in Kuppam mandal.

Shankar Rao to represent AP at Turkish handloom expo

Hyderabad, February 1: Handlooms and Textiles Minister Shankar Rao will represent Andhra Pradesh during an international exhibition on handloom products to be held in Turkey between February 3 and 6.
Talking to media persons at the Secretariat on Monday, Dr Shankar Rao revealed that the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has invited industries from Andhra Pradesh to participate in the Turkish exhibition with an objective to promote Indian image as also to provide a platform for industries to showcase their strength and capabilities in an emerging and developing market of that country.

Regardless of T hurdles, Racha Banda rolls on

Hyderabad, February 1: The Telangana separatists’ influence to disrupt the Racha Banda in the region went ahead unabated for the eighth day in succession on Monday.

In the districts of Karimanagar, Warangal, Mahabubnagar, the programme was either boycotted or was held for name sake as the locals cooperated with the agitators.

In Chittoor district, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits, state Industries Minister J Geetha Reddy participated in the programme.

Students caught in desperate dilemma

Hyderabad, January 31: The US authorities may have shown the way out to the Indian students of Tri-Valley University by allowing them to apply to other universities or come back home to apply again, but there was little relief for them especially those facing deportation.

Many of the detained Indian students of Tri-Valley University facing deportation are continuing to languish in detention centres in California because to get out they would have to furnish bonds to the tune of $5,000-22,000 depending on the state where they are detained.

JAC to disrupt CM’s Rachabanda in Medak

Hyderabad, January 31: More trouble is in store for Rachabanda programme in Telangana. The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) announced that it would obstruct the programme of chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to be held at Medak on Feb 9. The JAC took the decision after police allegedly started disrupting relay hunger strikes at several parts in the region.

‘Set deadline for project completion’

Pulichintala, January 31: The Pulichintala project works are going on at a snail’s pace as the state government has not released any funds for it since August 2010.

Ashok, project in-charge of Srinivasa Constructions, which is executing the irrigation project, said Rs 40 crore was due to them from the government.

Pulichintala project executive engineer P Bhaskar Rao said bills worth Rs 23 crore were pending with the government.

District Telugu Desam president and Mylavaram MLA Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao said Rs 125 crore was allocated for the project in the last budget.

Revoke GO on building rules: Mayor asks CM

Hyderabad, January 31: City mayor Banda Karthika Reddy has requested the chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for revoking of government orders related to the mortgage clause issued last year by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department.

In a letter to the chief minister, the mayor urged him to amend the Andhra Pradesh revised common building rules.

The state government had issued a GO, dated October 13, 2010 mentioning applicants holding 100 sq m and above plot have to mortgage 10 percent built-up area.
