Demand for separate ministry for Telugu

Hyderabad, February 20: MLC and educationist Chukka Ramaiah has appealed to the government to create a new ministry to protect and preserve the Telugu language, culture and civilisation in the State.

Talking with reporters here today, Ramaiah sought strict enforcement of GO 86 which make it mandatory for all schools in the State to teach Telugu as a language up to Class 10. “The importance being given to the Telugu language by the government and its departments is going down with each passing day.

Kakru sworn in Chief Justice of AP High Court

Hyderabad, February 20: Justice Nisar Ahmad Kakru has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court here today. Governor ESL Narsimhan administered oath of office to Justice Kakru at a ceremonial function held at Raj Bhavan this morning.

Chief Minister K Rosaiah, Assembly Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Council Chairman A Chakrapani were among those who attended the function. Prior to the present appointment, Justice Kakru has been the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

State raises Rs 1,480 cr through sale of SDLs

Thiruvantapuram, February 18: The State Government has decided to separate Tourist Resort Kerala from Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. It will be made a new company named Kerala Tourism Infrastructure and Investment Limited Company, Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan told reporters after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

PLANTATION: The Chief Minister said that the cabinet had approved a revision of the pay scales of the employees of the Plantation Corporation of Kerala on par with the pay scales of government employees revised in 2006.

NH-9 expansion spares old trees the axe

Nalgonda, February 18: Union Minister Kamalnath and Chief Minister K Roshaiah will lay the foundation stone for the expansion of NH-9 soon, according to officials.

The widening of the 180- km stretch from Dandu Malkapuram to Nandigama between Hyderabad and Vijayawada has been pending since long.

As part of the widening, several trees are being felled along the highway while many venerable old trees are being transplanted.

Stalker’s deadly proposal drives girl to suicide

Hyderabad, February 18: An Intermediate student committed suicide at JJ Nagar Colony in Yapral here on Wednesday allegedly after a stalker and his family had threatened her with dire consequences if she didn’t marry the obsessed young man.

According to Alwal police, J Keerthana (20), a student of LRMG junior college in Bollarum, immolated herself on the terrace of her residence around 7.30 am.

Hyderabad, February 18: The State Government is awaiting the Centre’s nod for introduction of YS Rajasekhara Reddy Madhyamika Shiksha Abhiyan mission in the State. The mission is a Centrally sponsored scheme meant for strengthening secondary education between 2009 and 2017.

In response to a question during the Question Hour proceedings in the State Assembly, Secondary Education Minister D Manikya Vara Prasada Rao stated that the State Government has already submitted proposals to the Centre and their sanction was awaited.

OU lathicharge rocks Assembly

Hyderabad, February 18: Police lathicharge on students and media personnel on Osmania University campus rocked the State Assembly today Tuesday forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for the day. Except moving condolence motions over the demise of some former legislators and introduction of a resolution on motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, no other business was taken up today.

At one stage, Speaker N Kirankumar Reddy urged the opposition TDP members to cooperate for smooth functioning of the House.

5000 T-advocate will march to Parliament

Hyderabad, February 18: About 5,000 advocates from Telangana region will take out a huge rally to Parliament on February 22 in support of a separate Telangana state.

Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee (TAJAC) convenor M Rajender Reddy, told reporters that the lawyers who are leaving by a special train on February 20 to New Delhi will also mobilise the pro-Telangana political parties and legal fraternity in Delhi to support its demand for tabling a bill for creation of Telangana state.

‘No extra jail term for teens who attacked Indians’

Melbourne, February 17: Two teenage brothers, who spent less than a year in youth detention for a brutal racial attack on a group of Indians which left one of the victims with permanent brain injuries, will not spend any further time in custody, an Australian court ruled today.

Victorian County court judge Christine Thornton said the 12-month detention order for the brothers, now aged 17 and 18 respectively, by the Children’s Court last year over the 2008 incident, was lenient but should stand because of the delay in bringing an appeal against the sentence, AAP reported.

Delays start of 4th day’s play due to wet weather

Kolkata, February 17: Wet outfield condition has delayed the start of fourth day’s play of the second and final Test between India and South Africa here on Wednesday.

Overnight intermittent light showers have left the bowler’s run-up area and outfield slightly damp which forced the umpires to delay the start of the proceedings.

Super-sopper has been pressed into service to dry up the areas and the umpires are scheduled to carry out an inspection at 9.30 am.

Top Andhra cop to probe violence in Osmania University

Hyderabad, February 16: The Andhra Pradesh government today asked Additional DGP (CID) A Sivanarayana to probe into the recent incidents of violence in Osmania University here.

Over 20 people, including students, journalists and police personnel, were injured during the violence that broke out at the campus on Sunday night and yesterday. Police used batons and lobbed tear gas shells to quell the agitating pro- Telangana students who hurled stones on them.

Home minister, VC face student ire at hospital

Hyderabad, February 16: Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy had to face the ire of students when she went to the Durgabhai Deshmukh hospital to visit the injured on Monday.

As she walked towards a student to enquire about her health condition, the girl hurled a question straight at her. “Why did you come here. It was you who made us take the cane blows and now you visit us to enquire about our well-being. Does this make any sense?’’ Swapna, the student, asked.

The minister reportedly was aghast at the condition of the students who suffered the lathi blows.

AP techie among Pune blast victims

Hyderabad, February 16: The terror attack in Pune has claimed the life of a Hyderabadi, Piduri Sindhuri. The 22-year-old software engineer from the Birla Institute of Technology (Mesra), was at the German Bakery near the Koregaon Park in Pune on Saturday night along with four of her friends when the bomb went off.

Even as the channels flashed the news of the explosion, the Piduri family did not have any inkling about Sindhuri, as her name was given as P Sundari.

Rights panel proves students’ saviour

Hyderabad, February 16: It was the AP State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) which came to the rescue of students of the Osmania University facing unrelenting police brutality Sunday night.

With no help forthcoming from any other quarter, some students called SHRC chairman B Subhashan Reddy and told him about their plight. Immediately, Reddy sent Ismail, a member of the commission, to the campus and it was only on Ismail’s order that the police withdrew their forces last night.
